The topic has been broached many many many times before.

It's interesting to note that Absor responded to THIS (http://eqforums.station.sony.com/eq/board/message?board.id=TNZ&message.id=165455&view=by_date_ascending&page=1) thread recently.

He's not suggesting anything is in the works, but, it's interesting to see a dev inquire about it.

Personally, I wouldn't play on one.

this would be interesting. Many have chatted about stuff like this. A project M server would be fun as well as a classic only server, and/or a server that starts all over from classic to kunark, Loy, Velious, then luclin, ldon, pop, and on with a slightly enhanced/faster expansion release system. Would be great for new players and allow players to have a more natural progression.

I misunderstood the title, I thought you were talking about 'Class server', like druid-only server lol.

This would only make sense if they rewrote the graphics engine. (i.e. EQ1 with the EQ2 engine) Might solve the problem the "ubers" have on EQ2. The EQ2 ubers keep complaining/whinning that the game is geared too much towards the casual player (a good thing in my estimate).

The "ubers" could come back to EQ1 and the "causual/time challenged" players could continue to play on EQII.

I'd love to reply to that post, but every time I log in it says "message not found" and sends me to the login screen :/ Maybe cos I have an EQ2 account but not EQ1/Station Access.

I've often said that if they did a Classic server I'd come back to EQlive. It'd be nice to recapture what it had - I often use boats as an example. I'd actually really like to see the boats working again and slowly float through the ocean of tears, listening to the waves etc. because there are no PoK books, no luclin access and either I'm another class or not at the teleport level yet.

At the time it seemed like such a waste of precious time having to sit on a boat, but in hindsight it was one of the places where I felt the most immersed in an online world even compared to today (EQ2 etc) - even if we were constantly /oocing to whoever happened to be camping the cyclops or hunting sirens. It's one of the little touches that made EQ1 magic, and one of the reasons I'm not convinced the "Vision" was as bad as people make out.

Nowadays, it's a huge world but it's all connected. It doesn't have the feeling of scale when you can just hit a book and go from one side of the world to the other, compared to the days when we ran from Freeport to Qeynos on the edge of our seats praying that invis won't drop.

Actually, there are several classic servers out there already. They just aren't run by Sony. You may want to check out some of the servers at www.eqemulator.net. I am not sure how accepted these are but I am having a blast on the server that I play on.

Absor also gave the distinct impression that he does not believe such a project has much chance of success after hearing some of the reasons for wanting such a special rules server. He did point out many of the problems that the live team would face keeping an 'old world' server running. Of course some of his arguments (you can play like that now too) do not hold water in the light of a fragmented populations and the pressure of other players who do not play by those self-imposed rules. The big, and unanswerable, question is if there really are thousands of players who would want to play on this hypothetical server long enough to develop a viable community. Keep in mind that the Firiona Vie server is hardly overpopulated, and those rules are considerably less harsh than an old world server...

It's a good idea, but it is one that is bound to fail, most of the reasons for a classic server are the same reasons I still feel fondly anytime I pass by my old world ports looking for natimbi or whatnot. I have alot of sentimental reasons for wanting to play in the old world again, all of the old timers can remember Lower guk and sol B being the end all be all zones for the 50s (the high level), I can remember spending hours in the east commenlands tunnel actually trading and bartering over prices with actual players instead of robots. I remember spending 40 hours straight camping pyzgn for my level 30 necromancer friend since +10 intelligence was the win back then. But none of those memories would be the same if I relived them on some classic server, we've been there, and we've long since moved past it.
