I cannot for the life of me figure out the correct way to spell license. Half the time I spell it with a c, licence, the other half with an s, license. Which is the proper American spelling? I wish my fingers would figure out which spelling is right. I've got it embedded in database names now and I can't go back and change them without breaking things.

www.dictionary.com has always been my reference point for spelling. ;)
If you use Firefox, you can just type in "dict license" in the address bar to get a quick lookup.

Yes, I use www.dictionary.com too... they're both valid spellings! Dang it! Wish I could train my fingers to use one and not the other.

A licence is a permission or written permission. You license people to do things. I expect the distinction is blurred nowadays.

I always mix up practice/practise, and it doesn't get any better with it either!

Looks to me like licence is 'Chiefly British' and the 'Middle English' form. Since I'm a hick from the midwest, I guess I'll use license.

I think I half way understood it like Anka years ago, then the rules got muddled in my brain and my fingers take off like a bat out of hell and type the word before I reason it through. I can't tell you how many times today I scratched my head when I couldn't find the Oracle view I had just created because I spelled license differently than the last time...

*whips out the wallet* "Driver License" Infact my insurance card says license on it as well.

Licence = British English, License = American English

It's just like defence/defense, specialise/specialize, etc.
