My thought is... as long as they aren't receiving any federal funds, that is their perrogative. Expecting the catholic church to be gay friendly isn't realistic. People need to recognize that and vote with their feet if they don't agree with that policy.

I can't see more than the first line, but the precept of kicking someone out of a school because their parents are lesbians? I would agree that the lack of federal funding would allow the school to make such decisions, but the girl is not a lesbian (as far as I can read) and shouldn't be forced to bear the consequences of what her parents are.

It is a bit strange that in employment you can't discrimate against a lesbian, but in schooling you can disriminate against their children.

Christian School Expels Girl for Having Lesbian Parents
27-Sep-2005
Ross von Metzke, Chief Correspondent

A 14-year-old girl was expelled from a Christian school in Ontario, USA last week because her parents are lesbians, the school's superintendent said in a letter.

“Your family does not meet the policies of admission,” Superintendent Leonard Stob wrote to Tina Clark, the girl's biological mother, in a letter last Thursday.

Stob wrote that school policy requires that at least one parent may not engage in practices “immoral or inconsistent with a positive Christian life style, such as cohabitating without marriage or in a homosexual relationship,” The Los Angeles Times reported in Friday's edition.

Shay and her parents said they won't fight the ruling.

School administrators said they learned of the parents' relationship this week after Shay was reprimanded for talking to the crowd during a football game, Clark explained.

Clark and her partner have been together 22 years and have two other daughters, ages 9 and 19.

I have no problems with a Christian school being able to discriminate as they see fit.

I think they are idiots, but they should be permitted to be idiots. It is not our place to force them to believe as we think they should, just as we don't want them attempting to force us to believe as they think we should.

I mean, I wouldn't want my local Hebrew Day school to be forced to start letting in extremist muslims or even worse, evangelical christians.

There was a case a couple of years ago IIRC where a little girl was kicked out of kindergarten because her mother (single parent household) supported them as a topless dancer. I'm pretty sure that was a catholic school as well. I also remember it got a lot of press, but don't remember how that one turned out.

Well I attended a Catholic school when I lived overseas because it was the only English speaking school in the area. Personally, being banned from attending a Catholic school may be a bonus to the child's developmental years. Maybe they've changed since I was in school, but there was no room for individuality in the school I attended.
