I was curious what benefits Sony feels revamping Freeport and South/North Ro.....getting rid of the Oasis zone. Is the only benefit the new "Hill" where you can farm Sand Giants?
I now see folks fighting over Sand Giant spawns like they used to HG's in Rathe Mountains.
As for Freeport, it looks cool, the first day had over 30 folks in it.....now it is back to 2 folks in the whole city at a time.
What was the point of all of this?

To update the area in which the expansion takes place? nah, that couldn't be it, way to logical.

Prescedent:

New Lavastorm for DON
New Nek Forest for Depths
New Ro/Freeport for Ro

Each new expansion since Omens has had the primary access zone revamped as well.

Also there is the consideration of the old graphics engine vs the new.
Correct me if I am wrong, but when they introduced DoN, they implimented a new engine. As such, they would like to convert all of the zones if they can to get rid of legacy code. Though how feasable that is I don't know.

But if they are, it makes sense - N, W, E freeport gone - replaced by 1 less zone. S, N Ro and Oasis - replaced by 1 less zone.

Love them!

It is my hope that SOE does more of this. Lets combine more zones!

Seems almost a no brainer that East and West Commons will be next.

These two old world zones links all the redone zones and they now stick out like a sore thumb :)

I hate that Orcs have a new look in Sro......yet the old look in West Commons.
Also......it looked like Guard Killing in Freeport was a thing of the past, with today's patch maybe we can kill Guards again. Guard Jendl vanished......boy he had the worst guard post, slaughtered all the time back in the day. I still used to kill Militia with my alts.

I think the new zones look awesome. I also like that they combined some of them.

I agree with Cass, I hope to see more of this with each expansion.

I wish folks took advantage of these new zones more. I still dont see more than 2 folks at a time using the new Freeport.......and I dont see more than 1 newbie using the new Ro Deserts.
I hope they make all cities with these graphics and revamp all the zones as well.

I seem to remember saying something about killing mobs with faction can come back to haunt you in that post regarding killing guards for xp Tejaye....

Quoted from Tejaye's post on the best place to kill guards...
________

When I started EQ in October 1999 I recall as a newbie being a scavenger with other newbies, as high level folks would camp Guard Jendl in West Freeport or the Freeport Militia in other spots and outside the gates of Freeport as well.
Well by the time Kunark came out there was lots of more camp options, the outide gate guards got nerfed and the spawn times for Guard Jendl and the others was nerfed from 6 minutes to like 20 minutes.
Well I still used to slaughter these militia back in 2003 and thereafter to level from 44 to 53. With all the new spells lvl 44 was manageable now.
I am now level 58, I was curious if there are Guards in any cities, towns, or something comparable even if it is not a starting city, that offer the exeperience, loot, and excitement the Freeport Militia offered.
The adrenaline pumps as you make your way using camo through the city and you occasionally have the entire city chase you out.
I don't care about faction anymore since I have my Epic 1.0 and I dont plan on any other quests.
So does anyone know any good spots to kill Guards at level 58 solo?

Thats the thing about faction, you never know what faction you destroy today might be the faction you need tomorrow in an evolving game. I find it humorous that they made some of the guards see invis..hahahah.

Enjoy the faction quests :P

I think it's pretty, especially the new druid ring area in Ro.

Tej, where have you been? I don't see you on much these days.

I like the way they melded South Ro and Oasis together. The terrain is much more realistic and I feel the zone runs very smooth. All in all it's better than I thoguht it would be. :texla:

Hey Juniper....we have a Yellow Lab puppy........he doesn't let me sleep anymore so I have lost game time. My son let me sleep more when he was a baby LOL.
Once the puppy sleeps through the night I'll get more game time. I love the new graphics and EQ looks so much brighter after 6 years :)

I like the new look. It gives a new feel to the game when there. With the new graphics to zones and npcs and even to horses I am wondering when they are going to do the same to the PC toons. IMO, our toons are looking somewhat cartoonish compared to some of the other graphics in the game.

Take a look at WoW if you want to see how ugly toons can look like ROTFL!

Actually they have to keep the poly count down in PvP games to accomidate larger PvP battles in which a huge number of players will be in close proximity to each other. WoW has some great looking zones but ACK! can they make the players look any more ugly?

A would love updated toons in EQ but it is alot of work. 32ish models (male and female count separately) with every single armor/weapon etc... would need to be redone. A ton of work for a game growing long in the tooth. If they ever do this I would guess it would be via an expansion so they can recoupe the cost of all this extra work. The problem is that people seem to balk at everything these days.

Update the graphics and the people playing EQ on C64's cry foul
Update zones and people say they prefer the old one (even if they no longer go to those zones LOL)

Heck.... some people refuse to get the expansion because of one reason or another. I look at it this way... even if I never entered the new expansion (and I have - it's actually quite good so far) if forking over $30 one a year keeps SOE updating my fav game after 7 years then it is money well spent.

Prior to EQ I would buy a game or two a month. Now I pay $15 a month and once a year pay $30 for an expansion.

With the average game costing $40 this comes out to:

Before EQ:

$80 a month x 12 = $960 for games each year (plus tax/shipping)

Now I pay:

$15 x 12 + $30 expansion = $210

So SOE saves me $750 a year :)
