He's an old time conservative and he has a new book out called, "Conservatives without Conscience", sounds interesting.

With the perspective of a former Republican political insider, and experience in the Watergate scandal when he was White House counsel to Nixon, Dean takes a sincere, well-considered look at how conservative politics in the U.S. is veering dangerously close to authoritarianism, offering a penetrating and highly disturbing portrait of many of the major players in Republican politics and power. Looking back on the development of conservative politics in the U.S., Dean notes that conservatism is regressing to its authoritarian roots. Dean draws on five decades of social science research that details the personality traits of what are called "double high authoritarians": self-righteous, mean-spirited, amoral, manipulative, bullying. He concludes that Chuck Colson, Pat Robertson, Newt Gingrich, and Tom DeLay are all textbook examples. Dean calls Vice-President Cheney "the architect of Bush's authoritarian policies," and deems Bush "a mental lightweight with a strong right-wing authoritarian personality." Dean maintains that conservatives without conscience have produced such a hostile, noncollegial environment in Congress that threats of resistance through filibusters have been met with threats of a "nuclear option" and that conservatives have used fearmongering about terrorist attacks to the point where the nation faces a greater threat of relinquishing its ideals of democracy. Dean appeals to conservatives to find their consciences and to all Americans to take serious heed of what is going on in the nation. Readers of all political perspectives will find this book riveting.

He is a lawyer.

And a Watergate conspirator. One of the lead conspirators and cover-uppers.

I remember him.

I love how Fy'yr just presumes anyone with law degree should be dismissed out of hand heh.

And yet, somehow, completely misses the point that he's a diehard conservative expressing considerable distress at the totalitarian turn the Republican party has taken.

All it means is that he is a professional liar.

And this one is a penultimate professional liar.

I don't dismiss liars out of hand, but it should be noted for any younger readers who may chance across this thread.

More importantly he's a conservative himself. Given the administration he served, you gotta wonder when he says he sees the signs of authoritarianism creeping into American politics. Barry Goldwater was going to collaborate on this book but died. :(

A conservative or Republican? Dick Nixon passed some pretty liberal legislation for the time... Clean Air Act and Clean water act are two examples...

Well, they used to be called conservatives but the politics has moved further to the right since then. He calls himself a Goldwater Republican.

Wow, the Libs have to un-earth this fossil to support thier point of view.

And Dean would call himself a "Goldwater Republican" since very few ppl would know wtf that means.

Dean was a Republican but not a conservative.

In general the Republicans have become more conservative - then again the Democrats have become more liberal so its a wash.

He was also the lead witness in the Watergate Investigation and a lot of what he testified to has come into question.

So in addition to being a turn coat he was also a liar.

Sunny :)

He's the guy who makes breakfast sausages right?

No, no... that's Jimmy Dean. He's the guy that wrote the song about John Dean. You old timers might remember it.

Big John
--------

Every mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive,
He stood six foot six and weighed two forty five
Kinda broad at the shoulders and narrow at the hip,
And everybody knew you didn't give no lip,
To Big John

Chorus
Big John, Big John
Big Bad John

I used to work with a guy we called big john. He was younger than me and hadn't heard of that song. I tried to get it to him but he refused to listen to the song. Too bad.
