Anyone have any suggestions on web hosts? I'm looking for a new one, my current one is being pretty flaky.

I'm pretty picky though... looking for one with:
- Linux(or BSD, Unix)
- Apache 1.3+
- MySQL 4+ with support for adding multiple DBs and users for security
- PHP 4+
- SSH shell access
- Reasonable level of control (e.g., .htaccess files, etc).

... and just as a plus, technically apt support staff rock.

I recently tried Yahoo web hosting, but had to swap back to my older host, as despite things like NetApp storage with file snapshots, the support was horrible and the hosting configuration very inflexible.

Any help is appreciated.

I've been happy with bluehost (http://www.bluehost.com).

Thanks. I just checked them out a bit. The features and flexibility are pretty impressive, and I didn't see many user complaints. I notice they allow user cron jobs. Do you have any performance issues on your site?

Strange to me, though, is that they seem to run two near-identical hosting services, BlueHost (http://www.bluehost.com/) and HostMonster (http://www.hostmonster.com/). In fact, HostMonster seems to have slightly better features for a lower price.

I'm still looking around but I will definitely keep them in mind.

Oh... I just remember seeing a hosting service review web site. Let me see if I can find it.

How bizarre. I use aplus.net and haven't had any difficulty, however that site above has them at -13 and +3 for reviews.

I use 1and1.com for all my sites and have never had an issue

Well, I went with MediaTemple's GridServer (http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/) plan. It's clustered, so supposedly more reliable and scalable. I have heard of people having issues with it, but none recently, so we'll see...

From what I've seen so far, it's pretty flexible and provides everything I need.

Thanks for the suggestions.

How's it working out, Yrys? I am looking for a new site for my employer. We need Linux, Perl, ability to compile new Perl libraries, and non-assholes for tech support. Never ever use siteprotect.net/com or Hostway... they suck incredibly.

On the backend, it's awesome... their control panel is very detailed and well laid-out. It's had everything I've needed software-wise too; they let you choose between PHP 4 and PHP 5, etc. The clustered system also means they won't cut you off even if you have high CPU usage -- though you might end up paying more if you're using a lot of CPU consistently. My site is low traffic, but the most I've used is ~1.7% of my CPU time allocation in a month. Disk quota is 100GB, and bandwidth quota is 1TB.

$ perl -v

This is perl, v5.8.4 built for i386-linux-thread-multi

I haven't used Perl for anything recently so I don't know about compiling new Perl modules.

The only problems I've had have been the occasional interruption of service (the clustered 'grid' system still has some techical issues). It does seem to be getting better though. In the past few weeks, I've only had one problem: MySQL was down for about 5 minutes today.

I have not yet formed an opinion of their support -- I haven't needed it yet (when they had system issues, they were usually already resolved by the time support responded, usually within a few hours).

I'm not sure if I'd recommend them for a business website yet; it still seems a bit too unstable for a production application/website.

I got my boss to go with Hostgator. It's more traditional but it has good recommendations. I saw some disturbing reviews about the gridserver so I decided to avoid it, but other than that it looked good.

Just if anyone ever runs across them, avoid Hostway. They suck hugely.
