Meridian59 was the game that started all this nonsense about
graphical MMORPG's. I have to laugh at the "rpg" part of the
title, but to further prod that sleeping dog, I'd need to post in
the "rants" section, hehe. Anyway, M59 started this whole
shebang.

And it rocked.

Sure, the look was ghetto, the gameplay simple, and of course
the well publicized problem with bugs and cheating eventually
brought the game to a gasping death. Games like Ultima Online,
Everquest, and Asheron's Call provided people with a new look,
and even though UO had more cheating than any game in
history, the other two games were relatively hacker free for
the most part. So M59 faded away...

Then one day, a rumor spread that there was a new German
version of M59 running. And then soon after that, a Russian
version. Some of the die hard fans of the decidedly old school
'ware flocked to the scene to see if it was actually true... well,
sadly, it was. The game bit. Hard. But there was a proverbial
silver lining...

Two guys, old developers of the early game of M59, and
nostalgic devotees of the magical realm they had helped to
create, decided to put a stop to the unliscensed farce that
was occurring overseas, and re-release the game with their
own distribution... Near Death Studios was born.

The game was revamped for balance purposes, a self-running
staff system was implemented, and now under the caring
protection of NDS, Meridian59, the game that started it all,
has come back!

If you value a smaller community, less corporate horse**** from
talking heads like those sent babbling at us by Sony, and a
challenging PvP engine that truly lets skilled gamers strut
their stuff, come on over to www.neardeathstudios.com,
sign up for a month, and download the free client. Join up
on server 101 (it has the most experienced and knowledgable
playerbase from which to learn the ropes) and have a blast
getting to "know your roots" by playing the game that started
it all =)

Personally, I play M59 while running EQiM waiting for a raid to
start, or a group to get someplace, hehe. Logging in and out
of M59 is as fast as opening and closing a browser. No 30
seconds, no /Q and wait while your puter churns like a $1
pony ride in front of the local Wallmart, and no non-windowed
game hogging up your desktop when you want to do something
else =)
