View Full Forums : Why is it called Cabbage?

I was directed here from another board where the discussion came up about how goofy a name Protection of the Cabbage seemed for a really good spell. Apparently there is some deeper meaning to this, and you good folks would be able to tell me what it was. Can someone explain?

Thank you.

It has to do with EQ lore. I dont want to mess it up as it did apppear on the boards when the spell came out.

The gist has to do with druids foraging up their first cabbage, their lucky cabbage and keeping. Perhaps thinking it would bring them luck and enhancments.

Hold tight for a more historically acurate answer, and be sure not to forage up any bitter slaw.

The lucky cabbage!

You know, that delicious cabbage you sometimes forage in the Karanas? A long time ago, a rumour started on this board that no druid should leave their home without one if they wanted the good favours from their god. I still have mine deep inside one backpack. After all those years, I think the smell only keeps the bad guys away... :)

The rest is history...

If you remeber you can forage a cabbge in the karanas as well as other places. Historically druids started to keep one single cabbage in their inventory as a "lucky" cabbage...basically if you think it of a lucky charm. Over the years it just became a normal thing and people knew what the cabbage ment.

So we needed a single target of protection of the gades. So VI set up a quested way to get this spell and with I think some pushing from TDG called it Protection of the Cabbage after the lucky cabbage some druids keep in their inventory.

Im sure other people can expand but thats basicaly how it came :)

When they add those lucky charm slots......they better add a lucky cabbage one which looks like the normal cabbage you can forage AND i expect it to be good stat :P

Protection of the Cabbage and the entire quest for the spell and earring are a direct memorial to TDG and to the historic druids that have posted here since time began.

The Original NPC in Fungus Grove is named Rebbecca Cabbageleaf and although she was in the game long before PotC came about I believe she was named in honor of our own Lotusfly. I also believe that it was Lotusfly that originally began the Lucky Cabbage prophecy.

The fact that the quest designers made this lasting in game memorial to this community is unlike anything that has been done before.

Don't forget that Sorun had a sig with a halfling holding a pice of cabage with a caption that read "Behold the power of cabbage" or something along those lines too heheh. Also in the books describing the initial quest that led to the spell had mention of many long time druids grove posters in it by name. The final reward (earring, not spell) was also named after the first druid to complete the quest on all servers.

Xanthe, yes. She was the first.

And if you walk around Norrath, you'll see various NPCs named after Safehouse mods.

Bat,

I believe the first person to use the cabbage in an image sig was Windd.

Sorrun's was in his text sig.

Also note that 'Protection of the Nine' is a reference to the nine gift bearers of the Cabbage quest.

If the cabbage of which Karana bless'd
Has piqued thy druidly interest
The Liber Brassica Felix ye might read:
A series of volumes containing a poem, indeed,
By a time-worn halfling penn'd,
Through the years and aeons, storied wend,
Sung of druids and a little of their lore
Plenty within, shouldst ye care to seek more. ^_))

Windd Whistler borrowed The Cabbage; she was a casual player on Prexus with a taste for jaunty signature pictures. The first cabbage still resides in the bank - amazingly, still as fresh as the day it was plucked, and still radiating Karana's blessing... ^_~

Toodlepip,

Some old druid.

/squishy hugs the old druid =)

gosh...sure was fun to think about last summer and the "Cabbage rush"...

A lot of work, especially from both TDG and EQTraders went into solving the mysteries of the poems...it was fun to be a part of (well, I read everything) and watch Xanthe lead the way.

That quest was the most fun I had in Norrath in quite some time.

Hello Lirren and welcome to the Grove :) .

Many seasons ago Lotusfly foraged her lucky cabbage and rather than eat or destroy it, she tucked it into her backpack and began to notice a difference in her fortunes.

After some thought, she realized that since her cabbage find, her death's were happening less often. The news of the cabbage's protection was something that she chose to share with her fellow druids.

Not long after, other stories of good fortune following the preservation of the lucky cabbages, by various druids, proved that the talisman worked for many of us!

It became a part of our lore and a custom to keep your lucky cabbage always, for the protection and good fortune it provides. And to also forage and share them with close friends.

I hope that your lucky cabbage will bring you much good fortune :)

Hugs to Lotusfly for sharing. My cabbage is sweet and fresh after all this time and there is nothing that would cause me to part with it.

The Spell version of the quest makes you go and buy Dark Root ink....

My surname, as depicted in my signature, is Darkroot.

Coincidence? The truth is out there :)

But ask, and ye shall receive. Enjoy :)

After that cartoon, I always thought the spell message should be:

"You are now protected by vegetable justice."

It was observed by grove members that after long spells of losing lottos and not getting spawns, that if they foraged a fresh cabage and kept it in their inventory that would change. People got Mammoth cloaks, Verm Tunics, their Paw drops and the mobs they needed would spawn. The power of the Cabage was mocked but once people tested it they became believers in the Power of the lucky veggie.

As for Windd, ahem... that was one of the less risque sigs. I remember one had to be removed and linked because of its popularity. Back when you could look forward to Windds post to see what the sig was.

Outside of Kaladim, you can buy Brodder's Diaries, which are in honor of Brodder Foamymugs, a longtime member of EQCleric. The game designers created these and gave Brodder a plaque in-game in honor of his service to the EQ community by way of player quests, story lines, advice to the designers, and so on.

Something not added so far.

Some GREAT threads about what happened after people ate their cabbage by mistake!

Some great train stories... the chance of rooting yourself increases 10 fold. And did I hear... sell your favorite item thinking it was yard trash loot... oh yeah!

Somepeople would log when they see the 'you are hungry and out of food' message... realizing that they pushed it to long... and they better go the the K's and start foraging before moving on in the game.

There are A LOT of reference to players belonging to some guilds.

Of course, if you don't know those guilds in the first place, it is hard to tell :)

I spent ages camping my mammy cloak as a young druid, nada (except LOTS of pairs of legs!).

On the way to doing it again one day went by the Karanas and plucked my lucky cabbage while helping a friend. Soon after I arrived at the cloak camp I looted my Mammoth cloak and have carried the same lucky cabbage ever since!

*points to his full set of Elysian, epic etc.* Behold, the power of cabbage!

sorta related to carrying a cabbage for good luck (which I fully understand), why the heck do we still have to carry around a friggin' fire beetle eye?! I don't understand why a spell needs to check my inventory for a lvl 1 mob drop that sells for 2 cp.

I mean, I have levitation and everlasting breath - they don't require components - but whatever that high lvl fire dot does. Why?!

Fire Beetle Eyes should be used up when we cast the spell. It would be much funnier if we had to carry around a few backpacks full of them _&

What zone can I forage one in?

Head to North Karana and forage away. I save em in one of the last slots in my inventory (so I don't accidently eat). So I almost always have a stack. I usually give them away to peeps trying to get that lucky drop or rare spawn. Never fails, they usually get that rare item soon after I give them a cabbage. All bow to the POWER OF THE CABBAGE!

Still, I'd rather that we have to carry the eye and maybe a few star rubies and opals all the time to having to carry stacks and stacks of peridots or pearls or other mage thingys for pets.

Aye Xanthe plays on my server. Sweet druid lady :)

I have always suspected that Lotusfly was being represented by "Rebecca Cabbageleaf" too. Lore /sigh

Aurelin (from my server that I met here at TDG many many moons ago) gave me my first cabbage before I had a high enuff skill to forage it myself (100 forage required) and to this day I still carry that cabbage. I roll crappy, but folks around me always seem to reap the rewards of the great drops that happen when I'm around =)

I miss Aurelin :( Anyone heard from her?
