...that still gets a kick out of hearing the level ding sound?

My main is a 65 ranger, so most of her dings are related to AAs lately. While it's cool to get those new skills and such, nothing beats looking forward to those new spells, and knowing that all the hard work you put into leveling yourself through soloing has paid off ;)

Plus, it's *so* cool to solo...I can solo with my ranger, but it's mostly based on melee (well, archery) with a bit of spell back-up, whereas it's totally spell-based with my druid. In a nutshell, I love it! Running in circles in just the right way to make a nice, tight knot of mobs so I can nuke the crap out of all of them. Yeah, it rocks ;)

Just had to share *wanders off, happily thinking about all her new spells and all the rockin' things that druids can do*

I don't ever get to hear the ding for my character, my sounds always off =-p I get a minor kick out of getting an AA point, but more so out of accutaly being able to spend the AA points on something =-p

I personally still find it amusing when someone goes "DING! 178!" or something of the nature.

Still, I have the wave file for when I need a fix and it's actually kind of funny to see how I react to the alarm that chains DING!s as an alert ;) Pavlov was no fool.

Ding....Ding....what is that????? hehehehe. At lvl 59 I get excitied when that little blue bar moves just a tick. I can see why many give up the Druid class around the 50's, but that in itself gives me more reason to keep getting my half a blue a nite, hehehehe. Take Care all and good look on getting your Dings.

Mostly I play with sound off these days, but for a long time I did have it on. I love the ding sound. :p The sound of an aa ding doesn't do it though, it has to be a real level ding.

You know a lot of raiding guilds members/leaders etc state what Rahjeir said and there is good reason behind this.. but truthfully I can't play w/o sound. It gives me a bit of depth to the images flashing across my screen. And of course.. updating my computer every two months it seem to increase its performance is some what of a cost just to keep it running smooth during raids.

But as for the Statement of Ding? Sobe level 70! Please I will have Nightmares!:burn:

While I don't play with sound on now, I certainly used to. I'd always turn it up a bit when I was about to ding...sometimes, it'd startle me. =)

I think I remember Sony having the ding sound available for download as an mpeg and/or cell phone ring somewheres....

I have sound down to like 15% b/c I dont like hearing sounds while Im listening to my music and its not on 0% b/c if I get blinded sound is the only thing that tells me im still alive and able to cast on mobs/myself. I Have music at like 50% So I can hear when the music changes while Im logging on to characters.

Now if EQ was a First Person Shooter Sound would be at 100% music off and I would wear headphones :p .

Wow, it's surprising how many people play with sound off. If sound was still in the state it was when XP was released, maybe I'd understand more :)

Probably just the relative lowbie in me, but I find it quite useful to hear when something heavy's stomping up behind by medding ass. Or to hear the 'argh!' of being hit when your eyes are too busy following other stuff whizzing round on the screen.

A few weeks ago at Paludal Caverns with my lowbie bard (everyone has to experience it at least once heheh) - just sat there and this voice speaks up and starts laughing! Almost jumped through the roof... turned up the volume and sure enough it was the pirate guys at the camp. Just one of those "whoa" moments that I really like about EQ.

First time hearing the atmospheric sounds in certain zones was cool as well, Rivervale music, etc etc

I think sound really adds enjoyment and depth to the game. Would hate to play it silent (but wouldn't say no to the ability to switch off certain sounds - thunder gets annoying after a while, as do people practicing the green "summon" zap-zap-whoosh type spells)

Remember the wolf howl back in the pre-Luclin era :)

I'm with Sobe, EQ without sound is like being dead or deaf. I tried turning sound off for performance reasons and saw absolutely no performance difference. I gain so much information from sounds, like who is being hit, that turning them off is like playing blindfolded.

I can't stand playing without sound either... it really adds a lot... There for a while after luclin they broke music and I really missed that... got used to it eventually but I was happy when they finally got it fixed :) Of course combat music = teh debil

Okay, new rule. The words "cool" and "Rivervale music" can not be in the same sentence. Ever again.

I turned off sound about a year ago... I remember the Ding all too well... Everytime I get another AA I swear I can still hear that sound.

I do remember the time I had my sound cranked all the way up. I was kiting mobs using sound as an indicator how close they were to me. When that lvl ding hit I blew out 2 of my 5 speakers...

Lesson learned :D

"I tried turning sound off for performance reasons"

I still believe that you never turn the sound off in EQ, just down to where you can't hear it.

The files appear to be running, even though you can't hear stuff.

Depends how you do it. I think the nosound.txt method does actually disable sound.

Cloudien

In this day and age, unless you're running minimum spec (P200 or something?) surely turning sound off will make minimal difference to performance :)

But then this *is* EQ, where the Bazaar still slows down a brand spankin' new 3GHz/1GB/FX5900 machine to a slideshow!

I play with sound off alot, but only because when I first started playing I had to play with sound off for awhile. My computer didn't have any sound, and I didn't know how to fix it and couldn't get anyone to fix it for me. So I played EQ w/o sound for the first 9 months. I got so used to it, that it isn't unusual for me to just turn sound down while playing because it is distracting sometimes. Then when I had a child, it was for nondisturbing reasons. Been so busy for the past few months, haven't been playing though.

When I first heard it, I finally understood why people kept saying Ding when they leveled. Until then I had no clue why folks were saying that hehe.

Supposedly disabling sound makes a much bigger difference if you're running two or more copies of everquest at once on the same computer. I guess the sound engine doesn't play well with others, or something.

Guild tax?

Is this some kind of dkp decay system?
