Trees

by Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

"The Trees"

Words by Neil Peart

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw

Why do more human beings know that first poem better than the second?

Trees

by Panamah Malfleur

I hope that I shall never see
Another bloody, stupid tree.

A tree whose ragged banches tear
My clothes, whose leaves muss my hair;

A tree that looks all green and prissy,
And all the druids love it -- those sissies!

Even worse, a tree will harbor
Those nasty birds that dark elves abhor.

And in the winter, trees I hate;
They drop cold snow upon your pate.

In the autumn they look gaudy.
Like cheap jewelry, just too tawdry!

Caves are cozy as can be,
And should replace all the trees.

I smell a poetic challenge from our Bad Little Flower.

A)#1 is older - more time for people to become familar with it.
B)Regardless of the actual quality, lyrics from "popular music" are generally regarded rather poorly by English Teachers. Said teachers decide what poetry is studied in classroom situation. People get exposure to "Trees" in classrooms. Exposure to "The Trees" generally only comes from Classic Rock radio stations (and message board posts I suppose).

note : the term "popular music" used here is a reference to the general musical type and should not be construed to imply that the song in question was ever popular. Rush's music has never been seriously popular despite its high quality.

I think that I shall never see
Any thing so majestic as the sea

Whos fearsome forces wrack the night
Yet protects us all from horrd blight

Whos awesome fury causes fear
Yet still we yearn to be ever near

From the icey northern floes
To pacific monsoon tornados

We humans brave them all
To heed Her beck and call

To those who live within a city
Forsaking the sea, I give my pity.

(And to think I'm a landlubber /sigh)

If you're lucky. I can count the times I've heard Rush on the radio on one hand, despite them being a prolific band who's been around for 30 years (yikes, I'm really old - I bought their first album when it came out... on that newfangled 8-track format :) )

I don't like the first one better! I like the idea of union trees. :) I always thought that first poem was really sappy... so to speak. :)

"so to speak"

Well I am glad you said it instead of me.

I stayed up late last night and wrote a little poem, too.
But Aidon's recently reminded me of Lazarus Long, so I just tucked it away deep in 'My Documents' so only my hard drive get's to laugh.

Ok, ok.

"A poet who reads his verse in public may have other nasty habits."

Did not know you were a Heinlein fan as well.

Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue,
I did not know the first poem,
But the second one I do!

A maple instead of myself

In 32 years a maple becomes immortal
or nearly so.
How many dogs and pregnant mothers shelter
under its cool canopy?
How many spinning seeds
do laughing children chase in season?
My rose bushes weather the winter
surrounded securely by her leaves.

Even after the has become inconvenient
even after she has overgrown her space,
even after the men have cut her down,
how many unannounced saplings take root
in the cracked cement nearby?
And how long
until her roots decay and her presence is forgotten?

More EverQuest Haiku

The Cleric's Haiku

I completely healed you
You died. Reloading please wait.
You need more hit points.

The Rogue's Haiku

Why do you hate me?
Pushing these mobs, back to wall.
I cannot stab it!

The Ranger's Haiku

I shot an arrow.
And shot many more, very fast.
Monk, rogues cry, "no fair!"

Time enough to love is a great story, but the one that really made my day is Stranger in a strange land.

Tree Poem
by Rex

I think that I shall always see
Another tree on which to pee.

Snookie was here before I came,
He peed here first and that's a shame.

Bowser piddled on this spot,
He's a loser-dog, and I'm not!

Woogums went upon the root,
His kung-fu is weak, I don't give a hoot.

I will erase their scents with mine
And all the neighborhood will think that's fine!

For Rex is the uberest dog around.
My piss adorns the trees in this town.

Woof! Pant, pant!
