Lets play doctor. I'll show you my cut buffer if you show me yours:

Cygwin is a Linux-like environment for Windows. It consists of two parts:
A DLL (cygwin1.dll) which acts as a Linux emulation layer providing substantial Linux API functionality.
A collection of tools, which provide Linux look and feel.
The Cygwin DLL works with all non-beta, non "release candidate", ix86 versions of Windows since Windows 95, with the exception of Windows CE.

Cygwin is wonderful. I just wish install information were saved better so that after every aborted download I wouldn't have to go through and choose the packages I want again. Eventually I gave up and chose to install every package at once. :P

Yea, sounds backwards to me. Linux should have a windows emulator. Then you'd have all the look and feel of windows but with no crashing. Now that would be something.

I knew this was coming. I had to stop reading over the compendium (I play a magician for the most part now) because it is overrun with whiney cry babies. It is the height of hypocrisy to say it is unfair for Druid nukes to be as good as yours because it is all you have.

Compendium has made a clear leap to #1 Whineplay forum in the past 90 days (although their unwaranted hatred of Druids was always annoying).

He's on topic, ban him! Just kidding, Vowel. It's just so disCONSONANT to the theme (har, bet no one catches that joke).

Actually, I use Cygwin on my XP systems when I'm not booted into Linux. :p It's actually a sweet environment when you can't run Linux. Got my bash shell so I'm happy.

But I ran into a problem, I can't figure out how name resolution works. Tried to set up /etc/hosts, but I don't think it is using it.

When Chen having me over for mac'n'cheese? :D

Seriously my first love is a brutal extra-sharp cheddar, be it scrambled in eggs, melted in anything, or just a brick I'm gnawing on.

But all cheese is a potential victim except bleu...I think I don't like it because one of my first jobs ever was working for Hickory Farms, and we had to clean 'morning mold', a natural occurence on those big blocks, off the cheese.

With bleu cheese, you never knew which mold was SUPPOSED to be there.

Panamah... what distro are you using? and I'm assuming you would need to install linux first and use diskdruid or the like to leave unpartitioned space for windows to create its NTFS partition right? Do you dual boot your eq machine? how's it work out? eq is the only thing keeping me on windows.. much h8 for no linux client.

Panamah
01-15-2004, 03:41 PM
Well, I quit playing EQ, so it isn't an issue. But I do play other PC based games so I keep my XP install. In fact, I have a few applications i run under XP and I like it for listening to my online radio station that uses WMP.

I have Linux 9 installed on my main system, but I don't really use linux much, especially with Cygwin on there. So I installed it on a secondary system and leave it going pretty much 24/7. I'm working on trying to figure out if I can create a 100% open source, Linux based Exchange replacement server.

But anyway, to answer your questions. I'm using Redhat 9. Dual boot (XP and Linux). I had an unused 40 gb on my main disk, but I also installed a new disk. The install was beautiful. No problems whatsoever with the dual booting business. The gorgeous UI based install handled it with minimal effort from me. I had XP on there already.

All I did was use there partitioning tool in the UI to tell it to put the /boot / and swap file systems where I wanted them. It left my XP partition alone except to install GRUB in the MBR. If you use the automatic partitioning, it'll try to use your NTFS (windows) install so you do have to go edit it after and say "hands off". Either that or use the manual option.

I wish you could mount the NTFS file system on Linux. I guess there is some 3rd party software to do it, but nothing open source yet.

If you want to run Linux, I can only say glowing things about how lovely the RH 9 installed.

Oh... Only bad thing is the fonts looked absolutely horrible on my LCD monitor but you can use subpixel smoothing and get truetype and bitstream fonts and fix that. And the only OTHER bad thing is that I get a nasty flickering on my LCD monitor if a window touches the upper edge of the display. I have NO idea what is causing that.

Mm when I was in france I had some of the BEST cheeses and wines ever. Not to mention Calvados. Mm. Had some that was aged for 40 years. Delicious! But while the cheese and bread was QUITE delicious.. a bread/Cheese/Wine diet was getting old by the end of the 2nd week :-p

But were you eating enough croissants?

My favorite thing was, I'd wake up in the morning. My friend would go to the bakery and get fresh baguettes and croissants (I always wanted the almond croissant). And I'd make coffee. Then it was a total carb and caffeine fest. But with all the walking we did, I think I lost weight on that trip.

I love how there's a cheese shop, wine store, bakery, meat store all within easy walking distance in Paris.

What are Calvados?

Calvados is a Fine Apple Brandy from the Normandy region.
http://www.beerliquors.com/images/graphic/spiritCalvaCoqueret.jpg

Click the button for the cheap copy paste info thing.
Calvados - Distilled cider is a long established tradition. The first official written references date from the 16th century, long before it took the name of Calvados. The first distillation of cider yields an intermediate product, the « petites eaux », with a strength of about 30°. The heads and tails, which contain undesirable compounds, are carefully eliminated.

These « petites eaux » are then heated for the second distillation, the « bonne chauffe ». The heads and tails are once again eliminated. The Calvados produced has a strength of 70°.

As it emerges from the still, Calvados is colorless, produces a burning sensation on the palate, and gives off an aroma of fruit and alcohol.

The stuff I had had a very distinct of good and fresh apples, or apple cider. VERY tasty, but VERY potent. Quite good. Had a dessert with it also (forgot the name, will ask a friend when I remember..) which consisted of an apple, with the inside taken out, living a shell of Skin, and inside was placed a creamy Apple Ice Cream, and poured right in the "apple shell" and ontop of the ice cream which was in it, none other than my newfound friend, Calvados. Was a great dessert :)

In Rouen and Paris, every corner had everything from a Butcher, to Choclatiers, to Bread and Pastry shops etc. Was very cool to have it like that, I loved that city. (Also EVERYWHERE there were TONS of pharmacies it seemed.. but maybe it just seemed like that.) Mornings for us seemed to be bread. Although for some reason... we had lots of ceremonies (went with a group from Bedford, Virginia (http://visitbedford.com/), where the National D-Day Memorial is at) and even at 10 AM, there were bottles of champagne being opened. Headaches. <3

Sounds yummy! One of my friends there in Paris is a totally foody. Anyway, she took us to this one restaurant. Very fancy. But the food wasn't the best we had there. I remember the dessert... I had "7 forms of chocolate". Basically it was little tastes of chocolate desserts prepared in various ways. Some drinkable, some truffles, some mousse things, some cake.. 7 of them. :)

I think one of the 2 best meals I had was at a restraurant called "Le Bookinist" (or something like that) which is right across from the place they sell books along the Seine. Man, that was some tasty food.

Then another was this italian restaurant that had the best italian food I ever had.

I could definitely spend more time in France and be happy about it. Oh yeah, I forgot about the chocolate shops on every corner. Do the French really eat that much chocolate? :)

And don't you love going on vacation to cities where you don't need to have a car? I think that's the best part.

Not an oxymoron, I think you were trying to say it was redundant.

An oxymoron is a rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in a deafening silence and a mournful optimist.

I think you meant it as redundant anyway, just used the wrong word.
