Do a better job estimating the amount of downtime you need for patchs.

Lately your estimates have been.... ummm... well....

I Bet you know what i was going to say....

Sorry about another interruption.

Thanks for you patience.

We just stopped telling you so you can move on to more important things to complain about.

Generic IT formula for downtime:
x+45min
Basic algorithm, where x = actual time to install / fix the item in question.

([(x+45)*y]*25%) + (x+45)
Basic Algorithm where x= actual time to install/fix the item in the equation, and y= the additional number of servers in the environment. Assuming parallel upgrades or fix installs.

([(x+45)*y]*50%) + (x+45)
Same as above but instead of fixes, we assume new installs or restores.

In other words, IT people usually have a good idea of how long it will take them to fix a problem under perfect circumstances. However, they should have learned how much they need to pad that number for general testing. Whether they actually write the item out in that formula or not, I've found it can be used to explain most of the general downtime estimates that I hear.

I'd just be happy if they could keep us better informed. I go to the Server Status (http://eqlive.station.sony.com/support/server_status.jsp) page and see that all servers are supposedly up. I get to the log in screen and try, in vain, to get in only to get "Cannot connect to server" errors.

The least they could do is make it so these things say, "The server is not up at the time and is expected to be back up at 3pm est." so you don't keep trying to get in.

They should list the Login Server along with the rest of them, as it's more important to have that up than the individual servers.

I have always wondered if the server status page is a real live-fed image of their status, or is it just a few .jpg files with some servers down but the majority of them up.....
