Yeah, yeah, I know it belongs in the "Other games" forum, but damnit, no one goes there :P

So, I got Doom 3.

This game makes me sick.
Like real sick.
Not in that "it's gruesome" sort of way, I'm way too desensitized to worry about that.
But rather in a, "Wow, my head's gonna explode" kinda way.

I've always been sensitive to FPS type games - Doom, Quake, UT, even EQ in the confined city areas would cause problems (reason #34983 I never played a DE).

Also, I suck at them.

I'd be that person who'd drive the vehicles in Tribes and end up slaughtering tons of people... on the wrong team. I'd rocket launcher myself to death before anyone else. No rails to keep you from falling off the side of a map? Forget it; "Gravity" just became the death match champion.

But anyhow, I decide to play Doom 3 - partially because of the hype, and partially because I'm still a gamegeek at heart, and I just gotta see this thing. I should mention that I AM NOT a big FPS fan. The only time I really played them is because friends would invite me to LAN parties, and it was just something to play between Age of Empires and MechWarrior matches.

So I play Doom 3 in thirty minute to an hour intervals. This game is neat.
It is a very spooky’ish, creepy, and “jump from the shadows” kinda game. If you spent the money for a decent set of surround computer speakers, this game will give them a workout, and the sound is really a big part of the ambiance.

Final question – is it worth the $40-50?
Yeah, I’m sure the big death match servers will be up soon enough and you can get “Blam-blam” shootouts, but even the single-player game is worth it so far. Plot? Yeah, there’s a plot, but it’s the fact that the game just immerses you into the world that’s amazing.

However, if you got any type of motion/eye-strain problems, this game will <b>highlight</b> them. Whether you’re on the lowest graphic setting, or you have some sort of monster rig that will support the Ultra mode, this game will make you queasy or give you migraines, guaranteed.

But if you’re a masochist like me, you’ll learn to get around it.

Will I play it till I finish it?

I don't know... the plot hasn't grabbed me that way, it's just the game's "spiffy-ness" factor right now. It's not a "amazing 100 out of 100" for me yet - but then again, I'm an "Age of Mythology" type player. Even so, this is rating at least a high 80 from me.

You sound about like me with FPS. :p I don't think it'll make me queasy, that's only happened to me a couple of times. But I'm definitely not a twitch finger player, however I love a good ambience in a game. I loved Morrowind for that, Dark Astoria and the CoT underground digs in CoH. I like playing a game that makes my hair stand on end!

I cant play Doom or any type of "doom" style game because of the movement problem. Quake the lot all make me feel sick after about 5mins of playing.. I used to play Doom and Doom 2 and just basically ingnored it to the level of almost passing out but that was when I was younger hehe. Now I simply cannot play those types of games.

What I dont understand though is why i dont have the same issue with games like FFXI and EQ when generally their simular... im thinking its because your not non stop turning and moving all the time in those games.

I can only play Doom 3 in half hour to hour intervals, not because of any sort of motion sickness. I just can't handle the heart pumping scared ****less adrenal rush for much longer hehe.

I see alot of people nay-saying the game...I think its great, myself, but then I'm not a FPS afficionado. This is the first FPS I've purchased since Tribes, which was the first I'd purchased since Quake II.

I haven't been this scared, playing a game, since the original Resident Evil on PS.

I used to get kinda motion sick when I *watched* someone play the original 3-d shooters like Wolfenstein 3D or Doom. But I didnt have any problems if I sat down at the controls to play myself.

Havent picked up Doom3, the lack of a co-op mode really put me off. Kinda waiting to see if someone can mod it to have such a thing. But everyone seems to be saying the single player game is worth it.

Doom 3 is amazing. It's so cool how much they kept intact from Doom 1. The weapon ratios are the same, an Imp at point blank range with 1 shotgun blast will kill it, pinkys take 2. Speaking of the pinky demons what an amazing looking monster. Cacodemons react the same way. Sometimes when you pickup a powerup a wall behind will open up. It is totally Doom to me.

The lighting is what really sealed the deal for me on this game. Farcry made an attempt at good lighting, Doom 3 showed them how it's done. I didn't mind the "excessive darkness" and being forced to use a flashlight at all, it built the mood and set the game apart.

I think it's funny that you mentioned sound as a good part of the game, because that was one of my complaints. The guns sound very weak, the machine gun reminds me of morse code and when the marines shoot the pistol at you it has a nice big blast but when you fire the pistol it sounds like a .22. When I discharge a shotgun in a solid room followed by 600 rounds of chaingun ammo I want neighbors complaining I want walls shaking. The good news is that id annouced they are going to have EAX in their first patch because of legal issues with Creative. Hopefully they take this chance to beef up the sounds.

Whatever you do, don't buy this game for the multiplayer. First note that there is NO coop multiplayer =(. The online deathmatch is really poorly done. If you want to play online multiplayer UT2004 or Battlefield is the way to go. Doom 3 is definatly a single player experiance.

I spent alot of time reading the emails listening to audio logs, observing the detail, and about 30 minutes playing Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3. The detail is absolutly stunning. 50 bucks and about 25 hours to complete, I am thrilled with Doom 3.

I should qualify the sound statement. I don't really mean the sound of the guns, blasting away at demons, but rather the heebee jeebee effect of the whispering around corners, or the footfalls from behind, or the screech of the various undead and demons. If you could turn off weapon sounds and just "listen" to this game, it'd be creepy by itself.

Yes, I get VERY ill if I watch someone else play these games. But if I'm in control I've mostly always been fine.

Doom 3 is certianly engaging. I'm just dissappointed the storyline and progression is pretty much a Half-Life remake. No alt-fire is also a crime against FPS gaming. It's like a step backwards. Despite it's flaws, it's still very fun indeed.

I never got sick playing a FPS but, the FPS game Deus Ex would cause me too see double if I played it too long. The only problem was it was so engaging I couldn't stop myself from playing. I love games with good character development. This problem culminated when one day I was driving to work with my vision split. I got there and realized it wasn't going to go away. I had to tell my boss that even though I was at work I wasn't going to work today. Then I had to sleep it off in my car so I could drive home. After that I had to limit my play to weekends. Never had that happen to me in any other game.

I've expounded about Doom3 on other boards and on my own. What I will say is this is a very nifty new version of classic FPS gaming.

Yes, I had to get up every few minutes to walk off the willies. The emails/PDA messages gave the otherwise non existant characters some life... err, well now they have an unlife.

There is the typical boss mobs that require shooting everything you have into them but that's what ID softwared does. The visuals and sounds are just astounding. I ran out of air every time while just standing on the martian surface and looking at the scenery.

It does not have the sickening head bobbing that Doom1 and 2 has. It does have a lot of dark. Too much dark. I say that because eventually you get to where you just expect the lights to cut out and a monster to jump out every time you enter a new room. The dark was a little over done. You can, however, bump that up a bit. You can change the gamma (I think its seta r_gamma "#"). The brightness setting in the options does about nothing except make the PDA screen brighter.

This game would be so cool to play coop. I was disappointed that it wasn't included. All the other Doom releases had a coop version. I don't even think it would detract from the spookiness factor. That was the excuse I heard for not including coop. (Interesting that the XBox version has it....no won't speculate on that.)

Oh, one more thing. Long live the single player games. (OK maybe single player and a friend or two games).

I got this on Saturday, and I was skeptical. Doom 1 in my eyes was an absolute masterpiece, and to live up to it didn't seem possible. How wrong I was... they captured the magic of Doom 1 perfectly, from the creepy sounds to the secret areas and booby traps.

One thing I really liked about Doom 1 was how you couldn't really just storm in guns blazing like some Quake deathmatch and expect to stay alive... you'd have to creep around all the corners and plan your moves. The same has been brought into Doom 3 perfectly. It has you right on the edge of your seat at all times.

Happily able to play smoothly in High Detail on a 128MB card, the graphics are amazing... best graphics I've seen in any game so far. I was blown away.

It's the sounds that really send shivers down my spine. You're just creeping along and suddenly you'll hear breathing, or your character will be spooked by something and you'll get various 'creepy sounds/beats', or an evil cackle will echo from down below... sometimes there's nothing in it, sometimes there is, so you're always on the edge.

For anyone using ATI hardware, Read This Link (http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14874&start=1020&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=)

this hack allowed me to play at High Graphics settings 1024x768 and keep a respectable 35-40fps with my Radeon 9700 Pro

Oh, and for those who say its too dark, Try the Duct Tape Mod (http://ducttape.glenmurphy.com/) Lets you attach your flashlight to your weapons. mighty handy.

I'm playing it through a second time with higher graphic settings (was on medium now on high, I see no difference...)

You still have to take it in doses the second time around but this time you can try the alternate ways of doing things. For instance at one point your given two choices of how to cross a particular complex. I did it the other way this time.

I also took the time to look around at some of the stuff I didn't before, like the little cubby areas that I bypassed following my faithful robot dog through the dark areas and that poor scientist with his lantern.

I'm just past where you first get the chainsaw, in the hallway with the waves of screaming. I saved and loaded up Horizons again to work on some community work after that.
