Ok, next one is about people who use guilds as stepping stones. I just don't get it and this one in particular just pisses me off...we have an alliance of folks that raid together. We're not up to "uber" guild standards but we can do NToV, Sleepers Tomb, Zland, etc with ease. And we're working our way up but try to keep a balance of friends/family and raiding. We have a few 60 wizards, 2 with MB and 1 halfway there. A few more wizards about to ding 60. We work pretty hard on getting these wizards what they need to give their max dps. Just recently one of our bards ran into myka (or whatever her name is) and we got this one particular wizard dragonbane and the improved dmg 3 neck off hal dar. 2 days ago in fact. Today I log on to find out she left the alliance guild she was in for one of the top teir guilds on the server.

What a tasty treat for them, lvl 60 wizard with MB, dragonbane and every other spell she needs plus a pretty nice dmg focus item and they didn't have to do a thing.

Greed over friendship...grrr. What I just don't understand is how we never saw it coming. I mean, no clue. She wasn't a loot whore, got along great with everyone. Never complained and was always around. Exp groups, 2 group exploration parties etc. The kind of person you'd never expect would pull something like that. Makes me leary to do all that for the next wizard in line. What a waste.

Yup, I do sympathize with you, as I've seen players leave guilds a few days after getting their epics. At that point you get very frustrated because it's this unspoken rule that you help people with their epics so that the guild gets better as a collective.

To get a little perspective, you just have to think of most players as people you play EQ with -- and nothing more -- unless your game relationship expands into something more "real life." I guess what I mean is, if you take things less personally, you don't get so upset at people.

I've got the other side of the story on this one...

I was in a guild which was more "friends" oriented than it was "raid" oriented. I was an officer in this guild and helped recruit new players, and decide policy. Like most guilds, we were always drooling at the high end mobs and working towards getting to that level.

We would do stuff as a guild, couple raids here and there. However, as more and more of us started reaching towards that level 60 goal, we seemed to always get these random 45's and 50's - sometimes 30's. The focus shifted from a "get to killing dragons" to a "support the new guys" mentality. Most of you know where I'm going with this. No matter how much you "support the new guys" you never lose your lowball crowd. The guild sort of stagnates at the lower levels. You get stuck with too many high levels for lower end raids, and not enough high level players for high level raids.

Eventually you start getting attrition. The high level players get bored because they're tired of doing places like COM because they have friends in other guilds who are doing ToV. Now it's switching from friends in TOV to friends in Ssra.

The ultimate balancing game in a tier 2 guild is keeping both your lower and higher end folks happy at the same time, while still moving forward as a guild. When your players start to feel like you're stagnating, that's when you start to lose people to the higher end guilds.

My guild was a lot like yours Storm. I've been in the same guild with my first char (my necro) since maybe 2 months after EQ came out, the guild has had major highs and lows. About when velious came out there was a core section of the guild that was finally working it's way up to doing the higher end velious encounters but at the same time we had lvl 30s and lvl 40 mains floating around guild and as they progressed into the low 50s they started draining our time from advancing through velious as we found ourselves going to places like Fear, Hate, CoM all the time for epic drops.

This problem really hurt the guild and controversies broke out that probably set us back at least 6 months as we went from being an HoT guild to being a guild on the brink of collapse, and a lot of the guild elders got fed up and migrated to guilds that were doing NToV. Eventually though we reformed and our doing quite well now.

The one thing I never considered in all this time was changing guilds, I loved my guild and my best EQ friends were in it I couldn't imagine changing guilds just so I can get better gear faster. What I did do though was finally I moved my cleric who was 59 at the time into an upper tier guild simply because I wanted to experience the high end game and I didn't consider with drawing my necro as an option. (And anyways my necro probably wouldn't be wanted in the guild my cleric joined hehe). It really ended up working out great my cleric was still available when we needed some extra healing power and I politely never rolled for anything with him when I was helping out my "main" guild.

I have to agree with this rant 100% I just get disgusted at people that abandon a guild right after they get epic or xxx nice item.

I left my "friends" guild due to politics (happens when a move server option comes around) and went solo for a good four or five months before I joined my current "raiding" guild.

They had a Fan Faire here in Dallas recently and there was a post-faire party for my server hosted by one of the players. Only about five or six people from the various "tier 1" guilds were there, the rest of the 25+ people were from lower level guilds. You always read about it in posts, but it was almost a shock to find out how different the game we played was. The people who were not in the Teir 1 slots were not playing the same game I was. They were worried about tradeskills, just made level 51, little quests for trinket items, happy about PoG armor.

Meanwhile, the other folks from the Teir 1 guilds were talking about NToV raids, the Ssra key quests, etc. Two sets of players, same game, different planet.

Not to controverse, but you have to understand that some people arer looking for different thing in the game.

Some people just like to play with friends, and whatever could happen to them, you know they're getting fun on several things by playing with friends (and generaly people you know IRL).

Some people are looking for big fights, with strategies, everyone's got a job to do etc etc.. the goal : kill a_uber_mob00. Where items are not a goal but only some items that can help you to kill harder mobs.

Some people are just looking for the_best_stuff_ever00, and once they got it, they just leave the game, kind of achievment.

You can rant, but these are answers you could get.

Well, here's my story:

I started this druid because i had been playing a druid on my friends account, and it didn't work playing around him, and i wanted to play with him(52rogue i think, was like 48 at time) Anyway, i started my own account, started another druid, and i wanted to join the guild he was in (55+ now, but it wasn't then) so i stayed guildless till like 25 30 i think, and then this guy i met invited me so i joined, and i stayed there all the way till 52, Infact i just disbanded the other day. I left not because of the people, but because i have done the low-mid level crap, and i knew it was time to leave when my first raid was when i was level 51 and it was one i was putting together on the moments notice for VSR, and because i didn't have a guild to back me up, it was botched, and that ****ed me off, because if i woulda had the guild i just joined, i coulda had the hardest oart of my epic done in 1hour, we never raided, never epic stuffed, never did anything. It was really just a chat channel. I really want to get my epic (but NOT just get it and dump um)

Was i wrong to do so? I was almost always the highest guy on at 51 52. Thanks

I think one of the major points of Seriena's rant is that her guild generously gave some hard to get items to this wizard because it would make her guild better overall. The wizard accepted those items on that basis, and then up and left, using them for his individual benefit to join a higher tier guild.

I don't doubt that Seriena and her guild feel used. Since the wizard knew he was going to leave the the guild, he should not have accepted the items and instead let another guild wizard have them.

The wizard's actions show no class, no nobility, but rather greed and selfishness. He used Seriena's guild as a stepping stone to get him what he needed to jump up to another guild. I've seen this happen with clerics who get their epics, warriors who get their 2nd tier weapons and bp, etc. It's like a slap in the face to the guild that helped them. Continue ranting Seriena! You've earned it in this case!

From my experiences, you can usually tell which players are likely to change guilds when they get what they want from you and leave. It's usually the powergamers who are always asking for help even though rarely helping others and know that their class is important to the guild. I knew a mage(coth) who pulled this stunt, needless to say I wasn't impressed.

Happens to us all the time Seriena. Funny thing is a few of them have asked or suggested that they wanted to come back because the got to xxxx guild and are no longer treated with respect and friendship. They feel like they are a number and always in competition to get better gear where with us they were well taken care of overall.

I get great pride is answering their requests for a retag with a simple /veto :)

My peeve is that when a person's main leaves your guild to join a stronger one, they ask if they can keep their alt in your guild.:|
