Hi all! I'm a lvl 57 druid that is co-leader of my guild. I have many newbs in the guild (about 20% of 110 ppl). I like helping people out and teaching them about the game. However I am beginning to get fustrated with newbs asking in guild chat...

"What's a good zone for me to hunt in? I'm lvl 24." Then,
"What's High Keep and how do I get there?"

Or..

"Help!! I'm lost in Butcherblock Mountains!! Someone please come find me."

Or..

"No - I'm lost and I don't have a map. I'm using the 30 day trial."

As a druid, I can get around faster than most. So I go to help. However several trips a day is starting to wear me down. :(

Any suggestions on what I can do to better assist my less experienced guild members and their questions on new zones?

Also - I had a lvl 50 monk guildie ask me if he could join me hunting in Plane of Nightmare. I said, "Sure, come on over!"

He replied, "How do I get there?"

I replied, "Zone to PoTranq and use map to find PoNightmare zone in - I meet you when you get inside."

He replied, "I'm in PoTranq, but don't have a map. Where's Plane of Nightmare zone in?"

So again, I'm at my whits end. :bonk:

I know the LoY expansion came with a cartography tool. But when / how do the various maps of all zones come to activate? Does one need LoY for maps to work? Or do they need to download from places like EQtoolbox?

And assistance is greatly appreciated!

"Also, you have to have purchased LoY, otherwise you can only see maps for newbie zones and cities."

If they have a printer they can print maps from Map Fiend, or from EQ Atlas (older but still a wealth of info), EQ Maps is another good site.

I know how frustrating it can be to guide people into new zones and such, but good luck!

All the newbie zones are mapped. Pretty much all other zones are blank. They can either use the mapping tool to map them themselves(a serious hassle) or download them from someplace like EQtoolbox.

Most of us just download them.

This might come accross somewhat negative, but still...

He replied, "I'm in PoTranq, but don't have a map. Where's Plane of Nightmare zone in?"

If someone cant at least find the zone I have invited them too, why should I have any more faith in their ability to play their class. I can understand people being lost in OoW, its new, they might not have found maps yet (despite the fact they have been around since beta). But older content is well documented now and theres no excuse not to know your way around. Even if you dont know the names of camps in zone X you should still be able to find the zone.

Every now and then its not a problem to help someone out, show them a good place to xp or a good tactic to use. But if its a couple of times an hour which it used to be when I was raid leading for a smaller guild it completely takes over the time you have to yourself. Especially before luclin I would get constant requests for ports both from low level guild members and complete strangers. You never want to appear selfish to your guildies, but it can become a real pain. I used to just try and put an 30mins to an hour aside while I was on to help with directions/tips etc, then go do my own thing or it go too much.

Just a side note, pretty sure they made all newbie zones mappable, even if you had not purchased LoY.

Even worse is when a lv 61 Pally doesn't know the way and didn't realize they had a map function... It makes you wonder. Ever tried to discribe the button to open the maps then have to explain how to read a map?? It is one thing for a newbie but another for someone that has played a while.. But then, she is playing a blond pally..

It's hard to imagine a level 50+ who doesn't know how to get around the zones or find out how on his own. EQ is a VERY old game and there are map links all over. I don't know if it's still current, but EQMaps was always good. Rather than leading these guildies by the hand, teach them how to find their own maps. Send them to Ala's site and tell them to scour the "LINKS" section for map sites. The nice thing about that is they will also find some sites that give hunting guides, spell lists, tradeskill lists, quests etc that could benefit their character. Some people may not want that kind of info due to "roleplay", but if someone uses a chat to talk to a group of people not even close to them, they aren't that heavy into RP anyway. :)

Your true newbs should spend some time training. Have them create a level 1 character, sow them, take them to various zones and tell them to find a particular objective. Port them into skyfire and tell them to zone into the Overthere. Have them start in Kelethin and get to Freeport. Start in Freeport and run to Qeynos. Make a contest of it if you like - give the winner a newb-nice piece of armor or weapon.

They'll learn to get and use maps from EQ Atlas or other sources, zone connections, how to con mobs, how to avoid mobs as necessary, and master basic survival and navigation skills, all at no risk.

I'd be dubious about your higher level players who can't find their way around. Yours may be fine, but when I've come across such players in the past, they've been more liability than help.

anyone else remember nude gnome races from steamfront to quenos? Where you create a gnome and then race accross the continents? Getting binds were important. Then they created soulbinders and made it where you didn't lose your gear sub level 10 which made them much quicker.

Originally it took me 14 levels to make it from GFay to Tox forest but back then the world seemed huge and by the time I hit lv 20 had explored all of the zones.. Except for the evil cities.. They need to have a newbie quest where you have to forage something from all of the zones with a different reward for each expansion completed. That would truely be Epic.

This is something I did MANY years ago as a guild leader of a somewhat small guild...
We would have an Adventure day...
I would have prizes... Usually lil crap from unrest or Mistmoore... but back in the day that stuff was nice..

Everyone would have to meet up in Crushbone... I would give them vague directions... and they would have to meet me in qeynos... or Everfrost or something like that.

Keep in mind... the rules were... you could not ask for help in guild... you could not port...
Was a really nice way for them to see the world... Back then... we had no maps... no translocators and we had broken boats.
