So, I'm new to gaming and I'm lvl 24 but really inexperienced still. I've had all my points in balance talent tree at start cos I thought I'd need all the help in fighting that I could get + liked the moonkin form. But I think my nature of play as I progress will be healing but with feral for soloing. I've been reading advice on other talent splits on +ve and -ve points for certain talents. I'm gonna change my talent tree from balance to feral/resto. From what I've seen I was thinking of this (0/20/31) split:

Feral

Ferocity 5/5
Feral instinct 5/5
Thick hide 3/5
feral charge 1/1
sharpened claws 3/3
predatory strike 3/3

Restoration

Furor 5/5
Improved healing touch 5/5
Nature focus 5/5
Insect swarm 1/1
Tranquil spirit 5/5
Improved rejuvenation 3/3
Nature swift 1/1
Gift of nature 5/5
Innervate 1/1

I'd appreciate any comments on strengths / weaknesses of this split. I've sacrificed Heart of the Wild (am I right - this gives increased mana so will aid resto skills?) to get the points for innervate. Do you think innervate is worth the extra points in the rest tree? Also will tranquil spirit counter the lack of heart of the wild?

I cant stress how much of a noob I am and how poorly-skilled I am but finding this site has made me realise that druid playing is a real strategy class and that I need to get these talents right and get practice (duel allies... find some horde) to improve.

I'm lookin forwards to it!

Thanks for any help

imo, Predatory Strikes is a pretty raw deal at 90AP for 3TPs. I wouldn't bother with it in a build that doesn't have HoTW.

You're always going to be more effective in a healing and support role with innervate. HoTW makes feral builds more viable for raiding and allows you to fill either role adequately when unable to swap gear. However, innervate builds will still be superior for healing. You have to look at your own playstyle once you get to 60 and decide which gets you more mileage and/or is more fun. I personally prefer feral builds for everything but 40man content.

Just my opinion.....
I'd drop the 5 points in Feral Instinct - put 2 in Brutal Impact and the rest in Thick Hide or Feral Aggression (increased threat is fine if you are gonna be MT, more armor/damage is better for solo, and the increased duration on Bash will allow you time for a Healing Touch or Rejuv//Regrowth combo)
Resto - drop the 5 points in Nature's Focus (you won't need it w/ Barkskin and Nature's Swiftness) - throw those 5 points into Improved Mark, or a few into Reflection.

Just my opinion, but this should give you good skills for solo survivability, and the ability to perform in groups/raids.

I'm 0/20/31 myself.

Of the above opinions, I agree with Imp. Bash... solo/duel/pvp it's huge... that extra second is better then it sounds. Those feral pts are also better spent in the crit rage/points talents. More mauls= more agro, more pts = stronger finishers. I opted out of thick hide, since bear form has always been good to me without it.

In Resto' I like your choices. I have Imp. MoTW soley for raid buffing. Nature's Focus is one of the best talents in resto, being able to heal through dots/melee/aoe. I see Barkskin as somthing for channeled spells and poor druids with out Nature's Focus. It's good in certain situations... but terrible in others... after casting Bark you trigger the 1.5sec cooldown, then your spells take a second longer to cast.

I tank alot with this build, the only thing a full feral build really offers is more hp's in bear... which just gives the healer an extra couple of seconds if they make a mistake. On the up side, I can pop out of bear, NS heal myself and innervate the healer.

Resto ftw.

Thanks for the responses...

I take your points on brutal impact....and predatory strike. I may put TPs from predatory strike to Brutal impact.

I guess there is no 'right' way to spend TPs: it'll depend on personal playstyle - I just wanted to make sure that I don't used them in such a way as to leave obvious gaps or weaknesses.

Thanks for your comments - I appreciate them

Predatory strikes isnt worth it as mentioned. Thick Hide/feral instinct is pretty much just a flavor option I guess.

Good thumb rule. If you bear lots - go thick hide (or feral instinct if you PvE tank much) and primal fury. If you cat lots go feral instinct and imp shred.

And yes.. Brutal impact is a MUST! =)

Rockwell is right on. Natures Swiftness is a must have imho. I have played both with and without it leveling and endgame, and it really shines. Great point about barkskin causing a 1.5 sec global cooldown. Also, barkskin slows all your heals by 1 sec. So barkskining to heal yourself is going to cost between 4 and 6 sec. Which, if you are taking damage, is going to suck. The only thing that I ever use BS for is Hurricane, then Immediatley Rejuv and switch into bear.

Furor Rocks, though endgame having iMoTW is nice, primarily because it adds +7 to all resists. I took iMoTW over furor when I respecced from feral a couple months ago, and it took me a long time to get used to not having it. Just have to be more patient.

I wouldn't recommend anyone respeccing into resto more until we find out more about the new 31 point talent in 1.11
