Our Guild got together in tuxedo's and dresses and proceeded to his memorial (we cleared the area first for the lower levels) at exactly 12:00. We did the quest, fired off alot of fireworks, got drunk, got sober , got drunk again ... and then went to mess up the alliance memorial (witch by the way was almost empty).

Ignorance perhaps, but if you don't know who Grom Hellscream is....that just adds to the ignorance. I recommend reading the history of Warcraft to anyone who did not play the RTS games. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grom_Hellscream

i actually did spend an entire day while bored at work once, reading the entire history of world of warcraft through wikipedia. This guy never seem'd to be of any great importance, still doesnt.

So why are we paying tribute to some random minor background character in the game?

I quote....

"After being freed again from the demonic corruption, Grom told Thrall the horrible truth of the Demonic curse. The Orc Clan Chieftains had willingly taken the bloodlust offered by the Burning Legion. They were not as much cursed as doomed by the willing choices made by their power hungry leaders.

The redemption of Grom Hellscream was close at hand however, as depicted in Warcraft III, in the Orc's Epilogue cutscene. Enraged by the awful secret of the Orc's spiral into bloodlust and hate, Thrall led Grom into a tainted canyon blasted into existence by the falling Infernals to confront the Pit Lord Mannoroth and end the corruption that was once again visited on them. A mighty blow from Thrall was shrugged aside by the massive demon, whose counterattack left the young Warchief stunned and unconscious. Driven by sheer force of will, desperation, and desire to end his suffering, Grom Hellscream made his last charge. His axe struck home and the resulting destruction of the demon lord caused a massive explosion.

In a fitting display of symbolism, the death of Mannoroth resulted too in the death of Hellscream, who sacrificed himself to purge the demon blood from the Orc race. His head held in his friend Thrall's hands, the burning flames of the demonic corruption that whirled in Grom's eyes were finally quenched. Grom turned to Thrall and told him he was free of the corruption that had stalked him. As Grom died quietly in Thrall's arms, the warchief corrected his old friend, telling him that he had freed them all."

Because World of Warcraft is the 'now' in the history of the Warcraft universe. If the characters that make up the history and shape the world were currently playing in mean nothing to you, my guess is you don't play on a RP server.

What is the significance of Thrall, who was part of that event described above? Or Malfurion Stormrage for that matter?

thats nice n all, but that happened in WC3. I actually remember that video cutscene.

A) he is not a minor background character in WC3 he is a hero of the orcs.

B) World Of Warcraft is built on the lore from the three preceding warcraft editions and therefore the world celebrates the heroes from its past. I would be kind of dull to celebrate a characters accomplishments from two years ago (or whenever initial release was) so they delve deeper into warcraft history.

I agree with the above posters that characters of Lore are critical to the game. My fondest WoW moment is still when Jaida proudmoore (spelling) came out to thank me for helping her in person! If I had not played the games or read the Lore I'd probably mark her up as Random_npc_01.... I'd say the Lore keeps me going. Just to add I was on a PvP server at the time too, I've since moved to a RP server. So it's not just the RP servers with good people looking for Lore on them :)

Thats like saying "Sam is a minor character cause he didn't destroy the ring of power." Grom saved every single orc in Azeroth from becoming slaves again and id personally say thats a big thing. On the other hand .... I can say the same about Uther. I mean ... what did he really do to become such a big hero. (Disclaimer: Last part was added to annoy allies and is there solely for my enjoyment. FOR THE HORDE!! :p )

Ohhhhhh, your all those wierd RP server people. That explains it.

Just stay on your RP servers and everything will be cool.

I still dont understand how this came about now? why not celebrate him next month, or last month, or everyday? why now?

It's Blizz mimicing the US holiday of "Memorial Day".

It's a "big deal" in game currently. =P
