View Full Forums : Your First Choice For an Alt?

I was curious what most Druids choose for alts?
Since we heal, i figured not a Priest.
Since we DPS and tank i ruled out Rogue and Warrior.
I think Druids are closely related to Shaman.
So after lots of deciding......I ened up making a Warlock alt figuring playing a pet class is unique to Druids.
So is Warlock and Hunter the most popular Druid alts?
I figure if one makes an alt, you want a class almost opposite your main for variety.

I had a warlock but just didn't enjoy it. Maybe b/c it was a gnome and the laugh was annoying to me.

I have since created a pally ( lvl 29 or so ) I have another druid ( horde lvl 50 ), a priest ( mid 20s ) and a mage lvl 65. Once my mage is 70 and both my mage and druid have epic flyers I'll work on slowly leveling my priest during non-raiding hours. Maybe one day I'll try a lock again.

A druid wasn't my first character but it certainly is the character I've played the most and taken the furthest. Since druids are a bit of Warrior/Rogue/Priest, I figure a druid would role a pure class to get the most of the Warrior/Rogue/Priest role they like playing the most as a druid.

For instance, I actually enjoy dishing out damage and stealthing around tough spots the most about being a druid. So I have been considering rolling a Rogue alt to take advantage of all the abilities I only have a sampling of as a druid.

mine was a rouge, I decided I liked the rouge aspect of my druid so much that I would try the real thing (having lvl 70 friends take me through dungeons when im lvl 12 really helps, just did stockades in about 10 minutes with 2 70s :) )

I rolled a priest as my main alt. Actually, my girlfriend created it while I was out of town on a business trip. I came back to find a lv 4 priest. It sat dormant for about 2 weeks, so I adopted it, and lvl'd it to 60.

Shadow priest is a lot of fun. And my druid was resto, so if people wanted me to heal, I brought him. Otherwise, it was pure face melting shadowy goodness.

Second alt was actually a warlock, who is also incredibly fun. You could say that, after playing a druid (pre BC), I have a thing for OP 1v1 classes :P It was a nice to see people run from me rather than run at me thinknig 'free hk'. That's all changed, and now I have 3 OP 1v1 classes ^^

I've since lvl'd a warrior and rogue to 30, mainly to better understand the parent classes talents and abilities, which has made me a much better druid.

Well....I didn't think Rogues were good at solo in PVE situations. I know they rule PvP....but not PVE. I had a lvl 59 Rogue take my alt through Stockades, and the lvl 59 Rogue actually had a lot of trouble when the mobs got heavily concentrated on him. He could not keep me alive and his health was constantly below 30%. I have watched Druids,Warriors and Pallies of lower levels breeze through Stockades. Made me think that Rogues are only good in PvP and groups....but definitely not solo.
I played Everquest and the Necromancers in EQ were same as Warlocks in WoW. Necros were most powerful solo artists and PvP dominators..... so i figured a WoW Warlock could survive most situations.

I think it all depends on your personal druid playstyle.

I am raising a warrior (first alt over level 30 since starting in 2005) because I'm a sucker for buff looking tank gear and swords.

I really enjoy rogues and priest. I raised a hunter and a warlock and liked the increased ease of solo play but I found that hunter is more enjoyable. Still I <3 warriors the most.

My main alt was a Hunter. I got him to 60 and then the expansion came out so I havent really played him since, and for the moment I cant really seem to get into playing him.

Right now I seem to have a hard time getting into any alt for very long. I tend to bounce around between my 20 shaman, 32 mage, and a 27 warlock. I do also have a 46 pally but after playing the druid and ripping through things quickly, fighting with the pally seems like slow torture.

I went with a mage.

I do enough melee in my Feral gear.
I'm Resto specc'd so I heal enough as well.

I've never played with Moonkin so it's nice killing things before they touch me.

My repair bills are so small it's funny.

My druid is actually my just one of my alts, and one that is shelved for the moment.

Warlock is my main, and under him I have a 61 hunter, who I don't really enjoy that much, but every once in awhile I get him out, go kill some things, and log out.

I'm having a blast leveling my protection spec paladin, and before that it was an enchanement shaman. Oddly, as soon as my shaman got Dual wield, his fun factor died down somewhat. I don't know why.

I had a rogue, twinked to the gills, at 29, ambush spec, for WSG. But after a few months of that, and 1 shotting any newb (no fun) and destroying sword rogue twinks with their fiery and huge agi scores, I got bored of it. (For any who want to know, ambush rogues twinked right are the most powerful 29 character you can have. I got an 800ish point crit, without berzerker buff once. Then with regular 300point BS crits, you can decimate the glowy rogues and warriors with ease) I have since leveled him to 30, just to make sure I don't stay in the 29 range for too long. I someday want to continue up the lvls, and try out shadowstep.

I've got a 53 Fury warrior, which I loved up to about 52. Then they really die down in power. They are always gear dependant, but that's not as big of an issue at lower levels, and with the availability of so many good weapons from quests and instances in those levels. Then you hit 50's, and are still using 40's weapons, but too low to do any 50's dungeons, and it's just a pain in the butt to kill anything, and there is lots of downtime. My war is even a 300/315 alchemist/herbalist, and with all those free pots, its still no fun to level him.

I really enjoyed my druid when I was playing him, he got to 23 or 24 IIRC. I liked shapeshifting a lot, and the feral tree has been pretty fun. I just logged him off in Splintertree post one night, and haven't logged him back in yet.

My alts are druids with different specs. Yes, I realize that's stupid, but I just hate not being able to do whatever it is the primary classes can't do that my druid can!

Wont make an alt untill i have leveld my druid up to 70,
but im certain my first alt will be an ARCANE mage :)
The main reason is that i couldnt think of any less played
spec of any class except maybe the disc priest and i dont like priests that much.

My first char was a hunter, got her to 60, then I tried the druid and kinda got attached and she became my new main. I also have a 45 lock, 44 balance druid (just for a different playstyle), 31 warrior, and 18ish pally. None seem to hold my attention for long anymore, guess I'm just glued to the feral playstyle. >.>;;

I've been playing with a hunter alt because I want to play with the traps.

I'm thinking of making a mage at some point, or a priest so the guild has more healing in the wings but that's all up in the air :)

My druid was actually my 3rd character. I started as a hunter and got to 43-44 and started a priest for the healing and because the guild I was in needed them. I hated playing the priest and rolled a druid. I've played on the druid exclusively since and just recently started a shaman...but for some reason I only want to play the druid.

i brought my shaman up to 60 pre-bc, while my druid was resto at the time. my shaman was my dps escape from healing monotony (guild requirement to spec resto). ever since i went feral in bc, and joined a guild that is more lenient on spec, i can't stand playing the shaman.

i spec'd enhancement dw, and i was bored.
i spec'd elemental/enhancement, and i was still bored.

oh well, i'm prolly gonna "attempt" to level him to 70, but i have a feeling it will be a bit of a chore. i definitely enjoy playing my druid more these days.

I just semi-respeccd my priest (still shadow, though now more mana efficient / grinding / questing oriented), and am having a blast.

I forgot how much fun shadow priest is. The only drawback is being asked to heal everything, though now in BC, it seems that pallies like healing a lot, and groups are very accepting of having shadow priests dps (as with druids dps / tank).

Really fun running Ramparts and Blood Furnace with the same group back to back in shadow the whole time, except for 1 bad pull that I had to jump out of shadow to help the pally with some aoe group heals.

Shadow dps is awesome. I'd like to level my warlock to 70 eventually, but I have waaay too much stuff on my plate right now with getting Clari geared, and now my priest. I tried to play my rogue last night, and got bored after like 15 minutes.

I also have a priest as my main alt. A group of friends started playing on a different server and wanted me to roll a new toon with them. I had just grouped with a shadow priest in The Underbog and saw how awesomely they dps, heal and return mana to the group all at the same time. I like helping and I like filling different roles as needed (this is why my main toon is a druid) and thats what a shadow priest offers. Plus unlimited rezzing! :)

Not sure about PvP, but healing specced paladins (aka healadins) are awesome main healers. Since I've gone feral, I've probably had a paladin as main healer in my instance runs about half the time.

I think I've tried almost every class. The only 2 I haven't are the Hunter and Warlock. I guess I'm just too timid to try a pet class. EQ just made me never want to play a pet class.

All the other classes are great. I love playing a warrior, druid, priest, mage, paladin, rogue. The only one I disliked was the shaman. Granted I only played these characters to 20ish, but it was my least favorite.

Right now I play a Draenei Priest as main, to be with coworkers in their alliance guild. My horde have kind of fallen to the side. But, I still like horde the best.

well when i first started up wow i made a hunter but got bored of that after level 26 so it stopped. then i made numerous other alts that only managed to get up to level 20 or so. finally desperate i tried out the druid as the last thing i havent played and i found out that my WoW A.D.D can be cured by playing the druid.

Vidal
03-30-2007, 04:41 PM
I'm the same as Ferwindd: the druid can do so many different things that it can pretty much cure whatever I'm in the mood for.

I have a warlock for an alt. The play style is very different. As a feral druid, I'm used to getting down and dirty in the trenches. The warlock lets me hang back and DOT away.

Tejaye
03-30-2007, 04:43 PM
Well I tried a lvl 19 Warlock for the WSG. Even fully twinked, the Warlock was miserable. The Voidwalker does not give nearly as much damage as the Hunter's pets. My DOTs seemed useless. I could not stay alive. I was consistently in the bottom third for damage and kills. I think Mages blow away Warlocks in WSG.
My fear was the only decent thing and Priests fear just as good.
Well....I love healing and I will role a Pally to level 19 and park it in WSG. I figure my Druid gets killed kind of easy.....maybe a Pally could be better than Druids and Priests since a Pally can heal and is hard to kill.
Any opnions on this?

Hunter and rogue absolutely dominate the 19 bracket to a sick degree, in that any other class than those is basically worthless, and just KB's for the twinks.

The amount of power they can get from twink items at that level is beyond all other classes. And that follows to the 29 bracket to a degree. There shamans can be kings, but it's a lot harder, there are still the massive DPS output of rogues and hunters (and just be glad more people don't have the patience to play an ambush rogue at that level) is just insane. Warriors can start to shine, as can paladins. Casters have a bit more survival than they do at 19. But my mage for exampe, decked out with about 100+ frost damage, has a hard time killing anyone, just because they have so many HP's from enchants, and now that new leg enchant they can get that's +30sta, that's 300hp!

Don't rate a class by how it plays in 19 and 29 WSG. 39 would be ok, the twink gear, while still helpful, is not nearly as overpowering, and most classes are starting to get deep enough into their talent trees that they can combat the rogues and hunters super powerful early trees.

A warlock, affliction spec, especially, can destroy in the 39 bracket. So many classes wait till the 30's for their power, whereas rogues and hunters get theirs real quick, then they just steadily grow, without as many big changes.

Anyways, I've got a 61 hunter atm and 62 warlock, they would be higher but my computer died for awhile. Of the two I find the warlock to be:

A much better soloer: I can take on more varied mobs, and not worry about adds as much, where as with the hunter, certain kinds of mobs can destroy me, and adds can be the dead of me (or the feign death at least).

Much more group friendly: This is a tough call, but in the end I think it's true, while hunters are better at single target DPS,a nd can burn things down faster than most warlocks (Good destro locks can burn fast too though), other than pet offtanking they aren't spectacular for instance runs. Sure they have ice traps, but really in PuG's those broken so much it's usually a waste of time. Warlocks with healthstones, soulstones, and different utility based on pet:
Imp: Group Sta Buff, DPS, Damage shield
Felhunter: Dispell, spell lock, stealth detection
Succubus: Crowd Control (crappy, but there), Dps
Voidwalker: Offtank
Felguard(talent): Offtank, DPS

Hunters, especially now, run with a very small selection of pets, that has been decreed the "best", because they are slightly better DPS than others, or has a slightly better skill than others. Such as a bat or bird, boar or ravager. Cat of some kind.

As for PVP, I find the warlock to be a much more engaging character. The hunter has only one way to play in PVP. Stay at range, and use your pet. Traps and stings are tools, to help with that, but really they just try and kite people at range, and inflict damage. On my warlock, range doesn't matter, and I can choose to nuke down 1 person. Lay dots on everyone, or just lock down someone else.

Neither class is "better" obviously, but if you're scared away from pet classes because of EQ, don't be. Hunter pets can be dismissed and instantly resumed with no cost at all. Warlock pets aren't quite as easy, and require shards, but really it's nowhere near as bad as an EQ mage was. And the pets don't just decide to take a 3hour tour of your instance, and lead every mob back to your group without you knowing, as they were common to in EQ.

I left my UD warlock at lv 49 for a while and absolutley dominated every BG I was in. I was the king of WSG and AB. People would run from me. I was speccd demonology with talents to make my succubus's lash of pain hit like a truck. Send in invisible Succy, instant corruption, curse of shadows, immolate, shadowbolt, dead. If a mage was harassing me, i'd insta summon a felhunter and gg mage. Warlock is fun.

Then I got a bit bored, and wanted to get the felguard, so I hit 50 and respeccd full demo. I have since put points back into affliction, and can essentially grind non-stop. The felguard is a machine with the right talents (demonic feed (?) and imp life tap).

Warlock kind of sucks until mid 30's, then from like 40+ it is one of the strongest in the game. At 40 you get soullink, and at 44 when you get deathcoil, not may classes can kill you. Warlocks aren't easy to play, but if you have mastered a druid, you shouldn't have too much of a problem with a warlock.

im a lock lvl. 52 and their not so different from other classes. Their dots make them like priest (shadow) their pets make them like hunters, their destruction make them like mages and their life drains make them again, like priest. if you want to go into a class that uses pet, u mght consider using a hunter. locks use pets, and kill them themselves. Demonology tree isnt all that great. If u become a lock, ur gonna most likely run with affliction till 60 or 70 then respec. as a lock myself though, i love affliction and my pet just tanks and gives me health.

My Druid is my main...I LOVE HER. I raised her as feral up to 70 then switched over to resto to heal Kara.

Since Resto soloing and farming is insanely difficult and tedious, and I absolutely LOVE healing, I've started a NE Priest, who is quite strong (to my surprise).

So my master plan is....

- Level my priest as shadow then switch her over to Holy for raid healing (NEVER a problem securing a raid spot as a healer).

- Switch my beloved Druid back to a fearsome Kittycat, and farm for the two of them.

I've often considered creating a Fire Mage or Warlock on the Horde side because they seem to be the ones who give me the most problems on a battlefield.

I have a main Holy Priest alt (gonna respec shadow at either 40 or 50), and then a Frost Mage and Afflict Lock alts.

I've never been a fan of tanking, so, as a Feral druid, I always look for a group already with a tank, especially since I only have 3.2k health in dire bear at 52. >_>
260 agility though. Woo.

And I've always liked healing, for some reason, so I made a Holy priest to instance level. It's been pretty fun. Unfortunately it was my first Alli character, and she's dead low on money. I literally still need about 5g to finish buying skills from level 34 (she's 38 right now). ;_;

After the healing I've always loved caster DPS, so I made a frost mage for a bit more survival. I then also made an Afflict Lock for fun. I'm loving him. I may or may not twink him out at the 20-29 bracket.

OK - I like mages, don't know anything about them except that they can certainly hold their own on a battleground and they create wonderful refreshment tables (ever listen to yourself in Tree Form eat a mana biscuit? It's hilarious).

Is it a mage that can cast a mass fear spell on surrounding opponents? If so, THAT'S what I want for PvP.

I bloody HATE being feared. It angers me so much to watch my poor druid run stupidly around in circles. GRRRRRR.

Maggie,

That's a warlock and warrior that can AOE fear people (howl of terror and intimidating shout respectively ).

Interesting that I posted here back in March....so I figure it's time for an update.

After my druid, I leveled my mage to 70. I dunno, but I just don't like the "oh god I have to kill you before you touch me or....uh oh, corpse run". I still have my mage, he just gets very little play time.

I didn't like my paladin and deleted it in favor of a shaman. I leveled my shaman enhancement with the intention of going resto at level 70, which I did and I love the class. I really do enjoy healing.

I am in the ( very slow ) process of leveling up a warrior ( level 34 ) who will probably be prot or arms/prot at 70. We'll see.

I may re-level a paladin at some point. I took over my ex's account ( she no longer plays ) where I have access to a 70 priest and hunter so I no longer feel the desire to level those classes anymore.

So what's left for me
- Warrior ( in process )
- Rogue ( eventually )
- Warlock ( maybe )
- Paladin ( maybe )

3 classes have an AoE fear, but mages aren't one of them.

Warlocks have Howl of Terror (2 sec cast without Imp HoT talent in Afflict tree, then it's instant).

Warriors have Intimidating Shout (instant).

Priests have Psychic Scream (also instant).

Off-topic, but am I the only one who thinks bears should get an AoE fear? Heck, if I saw a bear running at me then roaring viciously, I'd run like hell in fear.

Lol just noticed I posted in this thread a while ago, oh well. >.>

I did manage to get my lock to 70, had great fun leveling her, playing around with demonology specs and affliction (I prefer affliction though). I love raiding with her, though I don't get a chance too often. It's amazing how well she does in raids considering she still has like 5-6 blues and I've only done Kara twice with her (not even full runs at that), AND my spec's still kinda wonky, AND my gems aren't the best. Pretty scary really, but fun. xD I was originally gonna PvP with her a lot to get nice gear, but I haven't had to... a few tailoring items, few rep items, and bam, I do better DPS than some full-epicc'ed DPSers I know. <.< Though to be fair, affliction shines on boss fights, and I am hit-capped.

I can't seem to play her constantly though, it may be because I do honestly feel a bit OP on her. It's a nice way to relax though, after spending the week tanking on my druid. Ranged DPS is nice n easy for the most part, once you get a solid cast rotation going.

I also have a 70 prot pally, which I love. Prot AoE tanking is just addictive I tell ya. Nothing like going into SH and just steamrolling the place, LoS chain pulling EVERYTHING and just watching everything die while not even pressing many buttons. I used to think druid 5-man tanking was fairly easymode... well it is, but hah, nothing compared to prot pallies, man. I still favor my druid for 25-man MTing and OTing (prot pally OTing is fairly boring for me frankly, though I like MTing well enough), but as far as 5-mans go, and trash tanking like Kara, the pally shines. I wish I could do better DPS on him when he's not tanking though, which is why I still prefer the druid in 25-mans.

I did enjoy pally leveling, what made me enjoy it was the fact that I leveled Prot AoE style, basically running into a big ol group of mostly-melee baddies, rounding them up, and AoEing them down. Single-target prot killing is freaking slow, but rounding things up kept me amused somehow. That first night I went to plaguelands, I had such a blast, literally would get quests done in 2 pulls or less.

I kinda gave up on my hunter, warrior, and balance druid for now. I do plan on getting back to my balance druid at some point, though. My warrior's fury, and while I like the playstyle, I hate how often I miss. >.< WTB +hit at level 40. @_@

I recently started a enhancement shammy, who so far, is very fun to play. I also started a horde ret pally, who I'm enjoying.

I couldn't get a mage nor priest past level 11 when I tried. I found them to be a bit too squishy, I suppose. I prefer classes that are a bit more sturdy, which is probably why I like tanking so much. Locks are cloth-wearers, but um, not really terribly squishy, since they have more health, a pet, and lovely lovely life drain (see, I even found a way to tank on my clothy xD). I've tried to level a rogue twice now, thinking I'd love them since enjoying kitty form so much, but eh, I just can't get into rogue. Might be because I actually find them a bit squishy too.

I guess if I had to choose an "ideal" alt for me, it would be pally, although to be fair, they're quite close to the druid playstyle in essence, just without the shapeshifting.

I went with a warrior alt for the opposite reason you ruled him out: Basically, i understand some of the basic mechanics (since I have a feral druid) so stepping into the warrior role would be smooth and fun.

(plus i hold grudges against EZ-Mode classes like Hunters, warlocks and rogues).

For some reason I enjoy playing hybrid classes in non-traditional roles. So I've done the ret paladin and shadow priest thing. Feral drood too, way before they went mainstream. Want to reroll now though and get back into the drood thing. Maybe balance, but after looking at the numbers and talking to my guild, I'm convinced that spec is unfinished. Compare to the raid viability of a shadow priest - but that's another story.

I am currently a blacksmith and not really liking it. I have thought about switching to engineering to gain the range but not sure what I will loose from blacksmithing as a plate wearer... Moneysink imo. Quest items, BOE drops on the AH and BOP drops in instances are easier to get, and cheaper to get, than anything blacksmithing offers. That's changed little since BC. Now you can make epic weapons that you can upgrade, but you can also get epic weapons from drops. How would you feel if you invested 1000g into blacksmithing to get an epic weapon, then suddenly you get a drop that would replace all that money, time and effort?

Especially when you consider paladins stat needs. Blacksmithing items just dont give you what you need. Don't talk about ret - ret is only viable with ridiculous gear, which blacksmithing does not offer. BS levelling gear is really, really bad. BS endgame gear is ok, but just as good stuff can be got by everyone else without investing thousands of gold.

On my paladin I went ench/alch tbh. All the +spell damage/healing from those two professions = magnificent for holy pallies.

I guess part of it is just what you want to do with the game. I've several alts...part of what I enjoy about WOW is exploring the professions and worlds for just the fun of it. Granted, not being able to shapeshift to mountain goat to gather wild steelbloom is a pain. So I have a mage with skinning/leather, a priest with ench/tailoring, a pally with mining/blacksmithing, and an auctionhouse wench. It's fun just to play the chars without worrying about how fast and high I can get any of them. To each his own...

My pally's an engineer, was always pretty happy about making that decision. The bombs do come in handy sometimes, although I don't honestly use them as much as I thought I would. The no-range takes some getting used to, I hated it at first, then I just kinda learned to run in and make messes (suits my personaility anywho). xD As prot, avenger's shield is lurvely. Main reason I went engineering is for those nice engineering helms. Sure, there's better out there, but when I hit 70 and made the tanking one, it was such a huge upgrade, and I'm sure I'll use it through T5 levels at least. I made the healing one too, which is also great, working on the ret one atm since I'm currently ret just for fun.

My lil warrior has blacksmithing, just because i uh, didn't have a char with blacksmithing. xD it seems like a pain to level though.

My druid was my alt after my hunter for a more importan role in raids. If i rolled the druid first though, i would roll unter alt for awesome non-resilience pvp dominance and grinding ability. Also, the eaze at which they can be played, and not direct threat to their health bars unless things go wrong.

My first character was a lock, but I never could really get into it, so I made a druid and I've stuck with him ever since. Since I'm a feral druid and wanted to have a healer, I made a priest as my first alt, followed by a mage.

So is Warlock and Hunter the most popular Druid alts?

Heh, as it happens I have a 60 hunter who I played extensively pre-tbc, and a level 19 warlock twink. :>

I am really enjoying my Hunter now. I've been playing him when I can't get groups on my main, which has been every time I log in. He's actually higher than my druid now at 32.

I hate the level 24, real dead zone. I feel it doesn't pick up again till 26.

I hate the level 24, real dead zone. I feel it doesn't pick up again till 26.I had a similar issue with my Druid. Levels 32-36 were painful. Pounce helped so much with leveling (less shifting to heal).

With my hunter, I remember there being a few dead spots as well. Once you get lvl 40 and get FD, you become a god among men WRT your solo questing ability. As it allows you to take on complex quests solo. And now with the new HoT mend pet (it use to be a channeled spell which made it worthless) your pet can live thru tougher fights while you sit there and pew-pew.
