So I dont' know if I'm doing anything wrong, but I normally can't match solo exp. I normally group with 2 of my friends quite often and I get 5-12k exp an hour, while I solo I can get between 12-22 exp an hour. While solo it's laid back, I don't try very hard. While grouped we tear through tons of mobs. Even when we kill elites, the exp still isn't nearly sas good. Is this just the way it is? I'm almost lvl 58 btw. I remember in eq just plowin through exp with groups.. but there was more mobs and you could chain pull easier.

It's sad, but I find the same thing to be true with my low-50's mage.

You recieve +11 group exp bonus :/

The simple reason for this is that it takes 1/2 as much effor to kill a mob for two people, so you get 1/2 the xp. I'm not sure exactly if this mathematically works out, but you get the idea: The less work you have to do, the less xp you get.

Sucks, but otherwise people would lvl Waaay to quick by just running instances.

Get a good group and you can get more exp than soloing...but in the end soloing is usually always more exp..just more boring =)

If you have a group that goes and takes out a person that is 5-10 levels higher do you get more exp as a group? And if you do then wouldn't it be smart to group only if your trying to go for higher levels or trying to get a quest done that usually cant be solo'd at your level?

Overall when you look at it groups can improve your xp.

Here is what I mean by this.

When you are in a group you get less xp per hour but can get better gear by going into places you could not yourself.

Despite receiving less xp per hour in the group, you get a great piece (or pieces) of armor allowing your solo time do gain much more xp per hour making up for the 'lost' xp while in a group.

You really have to go in and grind instances, and grind it well, to get good experience as a group. Which I think is one of the big faults of the game from 1-59, having a game that solo is very viable is okay, but punishing grouping so much sucks.

I find the big xp boost from grouping comes not from the individual kills but fromturning in quests either faster than you could solo or that you just couldn't complete solo.

Go pick up a bunch of quests for the next instance on your leveling path and get a group and go knock it out. The xp while in the group might be less than you could do on your own out grinding somewhere, but not once you turn those in.

In open world the same thing can be done with elite quests and quests that require killing tons of the same thing.

The goal behind a group is to:

1: Knock out many instance/zone quests as fast as possible.
2: Kill mobs in instances quickly, efficiently without stopping.
3: Reputation farm...you cannot, in anyway, shape, or form, gain kill reputation faster than you can in a group...IE: Timbermaw faction farming.

back when my warlock was a youngin at 50, we ran through ST over and over again, each time garnering about 35k in xp, killing everything we saw in about 1.5 hours. Zone out, DE the crap, AH the other crap, repair, food/drink, head back in.

If you have a set of friends that you always group with, and you know them well, know their playstyle, then you can get a deadly group that can instance grind for alot more xp than solo, PLUS the gold, items and quest xp you can acquire.

DemonMage hit what I was trying to say on the nail. It's just unfortunate that if I want to hit 60 asap that I'm best off by myself.
If I get a very good group, it's possible to match my exp in an instance maybe even get a little better exp. I can sit back and chill, go afk whenever I want and get still get exp better then grouping. The one main advantage I see is not getting killed by 3 members of the apposing faction out hunting for prey. Yes, of course gear is the other good thing about grouping. I've been able to farm enough stuff while soloing to get decent gear(not blue stuff). My whole goal at the moment is to hit 60 then focus on gear.... of course by then the new max lvl will be 70 and I'll be obsolete :p

The quickest way to lvl in this game is by doing quests. All the kills needed for, say, a desolace gathering quest may add up to 2.5k xp, but turning in the quest will give you 4k xp. If you can get the quest done in half the time with a group, your xp per hour goes up substantially.

I've never really understood grinding to lvl. I have done it many times when I'm 1 bar away and want to ding before I go to bed, but there are SO many gathering / grinding quests in the game that grinding lvls just seems tedious to me. Plus, this game is supposed to be about having fun (at least for me), and having a great group dynamic where people are laughing and joking with one another while questing is probably the best part.

And the protection part is nice too. Uvg, you don't necessarily have to focus on gear as you lvl - assuming you are doing quests / instances around your lvl (and not just grinding the turtles or something) you will get lvl appropriate gear. Not necessarily superior or epic items, but good stuff nonetheless.

The quickest way to lvl in this game is by doing quests.

So true. At 58, you should be questing in Winterspring, Eastern Plaguelands, or BRD/DM/other instances. Also, the Silithus quests added in 1.8 add just a sick amount of xp - some of them 12K-14K each.

I really need to go check out the silithus quests. I've done two of them - the gathering quests from the worms and scorpions (I hate those damn worms with their charge >< ) I just ran BRD last night, but took the wrong turn somewhere and missed the guy for Ironfel. Oh well, will have to do it again. Just got my rep with timbermaw to neutral so I can turn in two quests I got for them - some totems or something, and am finishing some jadenar / jadefire chains in felwood. Also finishing some random quests in Winterspring.

I have a ton of long world chaing quests in my log - I'm running all over the place it seems, and I can never keep them all straight. Oh well, getting them out of the way slowly.

I did everything in wpl except for that 62 elite in the graveyard. Been to EPL a bunch otw to strat, but haven't done any quests there. Thats next.

Which are the silithus quests you're talking about? I'm probably going to spend all of 59 in Silithus (and LBRS UBRS and Strat).

Depends on how good you are at grinding, for instance, at level 30-35~ I'd be hard pressed to hit 25k/hr+ from questing alone or with a friend as a mage, but we can easily grind that much. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to break 15k/hr over an enlongated period of time questing. Even at 59, 30k/hr off quests is pretty tough.
