Not really. I suppose next you're going to tell me AP is left-leaning.

But then I guess everything appears to lean to the left when you consider Fox News mainstream.

Conservatives want things to stay the same, to keep things predictable.
The Fox News types want more changes than the so-called liberal stations do.

How much change does Beck want compared to Obama?

The exact same thing is true for CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, CBS, Headline News, etc.

You liberals have 15 some odd national outlets for your biased and slanted news.
Conservatives have 1.

I will agree with you that there is little room for american newsmedia to the 'right' of Fox News

Of course the terms 'left' and 'right' are becoming increasingly meaningless if you try to interpret them as 'socialist' versus 'conservative' or even 'change' versus 'preservation'. In many european countries at least (and I really have not that much reason to doubt it is that much different in the usa, despite being an ocean and re-filtered news away), it is the former 'left wing' organisations that are currently trying to maintain the status quo and the former 'right wing' organisations that argue for sweeping social, economical and even political reforms.

And of course all news outlets are increasingly businesses selling a 'product'. Like all successful salesmen they do not care -what- they sell nor to -whom- they sell it, as long as the profit and bonus they get is good. My impression of Fox is that it is succesful not because it is right wing but because it was the first main stream news outlet that ditched all pretenses of being neutral and instead catered exclusively (and aggressively) to only a part of the people looking for news, and tailored their product (news) to what their target audience wanted to hear. They are cynical in the extreme in their marketing, but what they produce is not news as such but what their audience wants reality to be. Of course the same is increasingly true for -all- news companies as the trend to monopolise picks up steam (or at least form a duopoly to match the split down the middle of politics and even the population) (e.g. there is almost no independent news anymore in Italy with all the networks under his direct or indirect control and the biggest newspapers being forced or inclined to pay lipservice to him as well. Most newspapers both in the USA and the UK are in fact under the indirect control of only a handful of very conservative news moguls. I am not that familiar with the networks in the USA, but in the UK if it were not for the BBC there would be only conservatively owned television available, and the BBC are hardly communists in disguise either (even if their opponents try to paint them as such).

And finally, I would like to point out that there is preciously little -news- in what is reported. On my few visits to the USA I was surprised by how myopic and self-centered American news is (and that was without even watching Fox News). You complain about news being too 'left' or too 'right', but in reality the worst aspect of what you see of news is that it subtly promotes the impression that the world, even the entire universe, revolves by divine right around the USA. I do understand that there is a certain degree of this going on everywhere (French news is not exactly free of its French bias to name but one example), but it would be good for a superpower to look over its own borders more and earnestly try to understand how it flexing its political, economical and military muscles affect the rest of the world. The fact that there is no interest in that (as the decline of CNN shows!) also tells something about the American people and their attitudes.

So, before starting to clamour for more 'left' or 'right' leaning news (regardless of what that really means if you look beyond the politically inspired hype), it would be best to start clamour for plain -better- news.

American arrogance is what you described. Been around sense the "founding" of this country  Kinda of like how Americans were jumping for joy when OBL was killed but as a few news organizations pointed out (well 1 news organization and 3 talk shows) Americans detested when Muslim countries celebrated the destruction of the Twin Towers. I guess its a human trait (ignorance) to act like a fool :(
