I'd place the bulk of the blame for that on URL Pharma, not the government. The government certainly didn't compel the company to raise prices that much, or to sue to prevent the sale of other versions.

The medication was available generically for .09.

The FDA told URL that they could have a monopoly if they ran 2 rounds of tests. When the medications risks and benefits were well known.
And the patent given by the government gave URL the right to sue. That's what patents are for. They would not exist if that were not the case.

The medication was already available for cheap.
Government got involved and regulated it.
And caused the price to skyrocket 5400 percent.
It is causal. It is not subjective or open to interpretation, it's fact.
And this is what happens every time government sticks its hands in things.

You want to think of government as some big brother to watch out for you.
Its more like the drunk uncle who fucks you in the ass when he comes to visit.

"On July 29, 2009 U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved colchicine as a monotherapy for the treatment of familial Mediterranean fever and acute gout flares,[2] and gave 7-year marketing exclusivity[3] to URL Pharma, in exchange for URL Pharma doing 2 new studies. URL Pharma raised the price from $0.09 per pill to $4.85, and sued to remove other versions from market."
Without government, it wouldn't be $0.09 to begin with, and in all likelihood would not exist at all.

Just because one aspect of government isn't working, doesn't mean the whole model is flawed.

Your "peaceful anarchy" has never worked, anywhere, beyond hunter-gatherer bands.

What?
It was available before government intervention. That is clear.

This is an example of how government usually works. Can you please show an example of where government intrusions has decreased the price of something below the default position?

Without government intervention, pharmaceutical companies would not even exist.

Such companies are the result of millennia of progress in cooperative societies of millions of people controlled by governments of one sort or another.

If we had lived in anarchy without governments for all that time, then today we would still be composed of small roaming bands of hunter-gatherers, wielding spears.

We wouldn't have advanced medicine, or computers, or literature, or science, or any of the things you now take for granted when you consider your fictional libertarian society.

Cite me one example of a working society of at least 10,000 people based on your "peaceful anarchy" without government.

That's retarded.
People produced drugs long before any government intervention.

Is this a joke? Or do you really think the United States in 1800 had no governments?

Yeah, but those drugs were mostly complete crap. In some cases, quite literally. But, really, would you rather your girlfriend was on the Pill or stuffing her vagina with crocodile dung?

Patent protection provides companies with an incentive to invest in R&D because they know they'll be able to profit from their investments. The FDA, while imperfect, at least tries to make sure that drugs are safe and effective in their proposed use(s) and that the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks. They also set standards for quality control and packaging so that consumers are informed as to what they are getting when they purchase the drugs.
