Recently I have been playing the game Dawn of War. It's a RTS based on the popular table top minatures game Warhammer 40K.

It's a pretty standard RTS. Collect resources, build troops and structures, research technologies and bum rush your opponents for the win.

The game has 4 main races Space Marines: Devoted Human servants of the Emporer of mankind, Chaos Marines: Traitorous Human servants of Chaos, Orks: Agressive warmongers who live only to fight and, Eldar: Space Elves who prance around and use psychic powers to destroy all the other races (they are the Druids if DoW).

There is a solo game but, the computer AI sucks really bad. Even on the hardest level it has no tactics.

Online play is fast and furious. Gamespy hosts a battle matching system and you can play 1v1 matches all the way to 4v4 battle royals. The human apponents range from total noobs like me to insanely fast veterans.

The people who play best at this game are those that know how to micro manage their troops the best. A skill "micro" player can have a huge leg up on their competition.

All in all I am having some fun playing this game but, it may not be for everyone. I'm a really big fan of the Table top game it's based on. Even though I'm not that great my goal is to practice and get better.

I'll buy it once the price drops more, since I still love warhammer 40k. Its a shame there are no Tyranids tho.

They are planning an expansion soon so maybe it would be best to wait until then to gvet the game. The price will usually drop when an expansion is released. It looks like in the expansion they will be adding Imperial Guard but, hopefully they will add more then just them. I think that Tyranids would be awesome. I would also like to see them do Dark Eldar.

I thought the game had huge potential...but they failed miserably on execution, imo. At least for how I play RTSs (which is with a friend in coop mode vs the computer).

The single player mode was sadly way underemphasized, something we're seeing more and more of as people just make games for their multi-player. You get to be one race, and the campaign is short and as Fen said, the AI sucks. Just stay alive long enough to get 5 Dreadnaughts and then clean house hehe.

The game has great potential. They need to do a better job of balancing the races, and diversifying them. I got the distinct impression that the game was pushed out half developed.

According to the new PC Gamer (why do I still have a subscription?) the new race will indeed be the Imperial Guard. Also, due to many complaints about the single player missions; the expansion will have a large single player campaign (or 2!) per army. Also there will be new units and more balance, supposedly.

Hrm, that sounds like it could be a hell of an expansion. Something to keep an eye out for at least maybe

I think the expansion, I'll borrow to see if its good...before my buddy and I drop money on copies, we feel very burned after each buying the initial game.

Yeah, I feel your pain but, nothing can compare to the colossal amount of time and money I waisted on the steaming pile of crud that is EQ2.
