So how hyped up do you predict the media will get the public into about shark attacks this year? It seems to be starting up kind of late this year (it is nearly July) but with two attacks within three days, it seems to be jumping to a nice running start.

Well there is nothing else to report on right now, I mean fires in the midwest or shark attacks, take your pick. Now would be a good time for attractive young white females to disappear too, for maximum media coverage that is.

God, I'm so sick of the story-of-the-month and the perennial coverage of famous people's trials, and the missing white women. News has become primarily 95% entertainment and 5% information about important stuff.

Microsoft (go figure) pipes in MSNBC to all the TVs in the building - during the whole Chandra Levy (sp?) incident, MSNBC was spamming her picture nearly 24/7. Took me almost two days to figure out who the heck Chandra Levy was and why she was on TV. All they had were interviews with parents, friends, neighbors, senators, etc. None of them actually said wtf she was on TV for.

Even O Reilly covered it... *SIGH*

With that sort of media coverage it's not so surprising that the big political movement of the year is being staged by musicians. Roll on Live8.

Anyone watch the Shark Week episode of Mythbusters? They did the Jaws myths last night, pretty entertaining - very offbase in many of their tests (imo), but fun to watch nonetheless.

I watched it last night.

I was dissapointed that they only figured for "average" sized great whites in their tests.

Sure, noone's seen a 25 ft 6000 lbs great white (As Bruce the Shark was supposed to be in Jaws), yet, but they've found 21 ft 4k lbs great whites, and there are unverified reports of up to 23 ft. sharks.

I watched part of it. There test are so unscientific though I have a hard time watching that show.

How do you scientifically test some of the stuff they test? =P

I mean...taking last night, for instance, could shooting a scuba tank with a m1 gerand blow up a great white, as the movie shows? They went and shot scuba tanks of the exact model used in the move...and showed that it wouldn't blow up =D

For the scuba test, I don't remember Brody (Broady?) being point blank range though.
But... it did make me want to blow up a scuba tank with some c4... that looked like fun :D

A lot of shark species are threatened or endangered now. I was glad to see they mentioned that on Mythbusters.

As for their science, I think they do a pretty good job with what they have to work with. What I thought was interesting is that they said it took about 1200 pounds continuous force to hold the three barrells underwater. The shark they tested could do about a third of his weight continuously (IIRC) so you'd only need a 3600 pound shark to be able to hold the barrells down which doesn't seem outrageous.

He was a couple hundred yards away...it wouldn't have made a difference in its ability to penetrate the bottom of the tank, and the tank wouldn't have blown up.

it would have killed the shark however as it rocketed through its body =D
