At work we often apply the 'smell test' to facts, theories, opinions etc. It's a visceral, intuitive way of identifying bull****. It's not very scientific, but it works quite well. The 'smell test' is an excellent cross-check of more rigorous, scientific approaches to evaluating quality of information.
