I just read an article in the newspaper that was all about "LARP's" - "Live Action Role Playing. It seems you can pay money and physically take part in role playing games just like EQ, involving Paladins, Mages, Clerics and Bards.
The websites are listed as follows:
www.otherworld.org
www.quest.org
www.knightrealms.com
www.owbn.org
www.realmsguard.com/kony(vampires)
www.mythicaljourneys.com
www.NocturnelLARP.com
www.nerolarp.com
*****Or See www.larplist.com and www.larpaweb.org for additional information.
Have any of you done this? They say folks from all occupations, ages, etc take part. It reminded me of EQ especially when the author of the article mentioned characters from EQ.
Folks wear the costumes and moderators bring you through a story line base that you develop on your own from there, involving quests, etc.
So for those who ever wanted to actually live in EQ for a day, it seems it can be a reality.
If anyone did try this, is it any good?

Do you mind feeling like super dweeb, and playing 'd&d' without the board, using a lot more imagination, with more people, and wearing frilly costumes?

If so, you'll love it.

uh... D&D? :P

I never saw the whole deal with dressing up to physically play a Role Playing game... I do -however- love cosplay (anime) chicks!

Oh LARP must have been about for over twenty years. It still however, scores 10 out of 10 on the geek scale.

I used to do LARP years ago, and its great fun.

In fact some of what leads me to be disapointed in MMO's is the fact that they somewhat pale to the fun of a LARP. I went to Legends hoping that it would add more of a personal feel with events and such, but SOE dropped the ball on that too.

Some argue that LARP players are not geeks since they are being social/in person, while EQ players are alone at their computers. But I just cannot bring myself to wear a costume.

Bah my neighbors see it all the time, since I work in theater. Sometimes its just easier to change in the comfort of my own house, particularly since the theater doesn't have a home atm and most of our shows are on the road. They've seen me wander out in Victorian, Medieval, Shakespearean...(Victorian sucks for driving, though, having a bustle scrunched in the small of my back)

And let's not forget the thirteen years I did Rocky Horror at various local theaters. Most of the Capital District here has seen me in fishnets and a corset.

I probably shouldn't be too proud of that.

I vaguely remember doing a few Vampire: the Masquerade LARPs when I was younger.

Mostly it was an excuse for a bunch of goths to get together, drink do some drugs and engage in unsafe sex.

Good fun, but inevitably I felt dirtier as a person the next morning <chuckle>

Y'know, I never got to do the Time Warp. I played Frank, so I was always outside waiting to slip into place for when the elevator appeared....

Sad, ain't it?

If all LARP sessions involved alcohol, drugs and sex, it wouldn't be nearly as ridiculed.

Yes it would. Invariably, anything that has an association with role playing games will be largely ridiculed-deservedly, or not.

All the D&D and LARP my friends hosted involved drugs and lots of group sex. (Once we were past 25 with a few HIV positive in our midst it got safer) But we still thought it was geeky.

I think anytime adults dress up in fetish wear of any kind, sex is the natural byproduct.
