Anyone else watch this series? I came into on the re-runs, friend told me it was good. HOLY CRAP! I haven't been this sucked into a series and bewildered and mystified since Twin Peaks! I've missed a few episodes though, I'm definitely going to have to get the first season on DVD.
For those of you wondering about it, the plot is that a plan crashes onto this deserted island and all kinds of weird stuff happens. It seems that they're not the only ones to crash there and it almost appears that there's some sort of hidden purpose to everything that happens, or happened, to them. It is super creepy and mysterious.
You know something funky is up when a guy who has been crippled all his life can suddenly walk after the accident and its a tropical island and they encounter a polar bear.

I love that show! I wondered how they were going to string it out over a long period of time, but they are doing a great job of it so far. I just hate the cliffhanger they left last year - I wanted answers! :)

I think I"m one episode from the cliff hanger. Right now there's that column of black smoke and they're going to the "Black Rock" which turns out to be a ship. Tee hee! I missed out on the kidnapping of the guitarist and the pregger lady, just saw the episode where they were rescued.
My favorite episode so far was Hurley and his "numbers". Wow, that was spooky!
I'm dying to find out more about the woman who was in handcuffs. She doesn't really seem capable of all the bad stuff she was accused of.
I think Lock (Loche?) is my favorite character.

Dunno, I assume the usual time and it is in less than 2 weeks. I think it is 8pm PST, but my DVR handles all those details for me.
Lost is moving to 9pm this season, returns Sept 21.

Jinjre, a lot of the guys at work seem to be hooked on 24 and say it's a great show. Seems to be more of a guy series than a girl thing. I never watched it at all though, so no personal notes.

Oops! Sorry, 24 must be another show.
Yea with Kiefer Sutherland as the protagonist.
It's basically a 24-hour period watched in real time, each week you watch an hour show, so you would watch like 1PM to 2PM and then next week 2PM to 3PM. The first season is by far the best, especially when you don't have any idea what's going to happen.
I thought it was extremly well done Jinjre, it had quirks but the entertainment factor was top notch. Make sure you watch the episodes in order though.
Jinjre

Thanks Oddjob! It'll stay in queue then.
Right now we just started the Sharpe's Rifle series (Sean Bean before he was Boromir....very odd, I can only see him as Boromir now), but I'm not sure if we'll stick out the whole series. The ratings showed the first show as the worst (a lot of character development), hopefully they'll get better. If not, they'll get crossed off the list and we'll move on.

I just saw the last episode last week. I was so would up that several times I had to pause it and go to the kitchen and take a break from the tension. (And just now I was so wound up I couldn't spell wound!)

So, got any pet theories about Lost, Kerech?
I've decided that they were kidnapped off the plane as it was falling and put into an experimental world and they're being observed by aliens as all sorts of weird **** happens to them. Yeah, lame theory. My other theory is that they all died and this is some sort of purgatory.
Or... extremely smart Pirates were shipwrecked on the island long ago and they've figured out how to manipulate people's destiny, however they aren't so smart as to figure out how to get off the island.
At some point I fully expect to see a large, white ball erupting out of the ocean and pursuing people.

As for theories? I have no frickin' clue. I tend towards a "shared dream" theory, but that would be pretty lame. Something Bermuda Triangle-ish perhaps?
Panamah
09-19-2005, 10:41 AM
Yeah, definitely Bermuda Triangle. But... it seems like there's an intelligence behind it.
And what's up with Locke, Walt and Hurley? Man, those guys have some weird things happening to them.

Hehe, I was thinking along the same lines. Although the location is vastly different, the plot reminds me a lot of the movie Cube (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123755/). I wouldn't be surprised if they end Lost in much the same way they ended Cube. That is, without providing a final answer.

There was also that movie... Oh rats, seems like the word silent was in the title. There were like 3 people alive in the world and they found everything exactly like it was at the moment this cataclysmic thing happened. And they figured out it was linked to this energy grid... can't remember the entire plot, just the ending was really weird with a bunch of moons in the sky and mushroom clouds.

I couldn't find it on Netflix. :( It's one of my all time favorite movies. It did a really good job of conveying the loneliness of the situation. Especially the ending. If I recall correctly, the mushroom cloud at the end was the sun rising over the ocean (very nicely choreographed to the music).

Did anyone else notice that the shark which was stalking the guys on the raft had a graphic of some sort on its tail? So... what's the answer to the 2 snowmen question? Any guesses?
Klath

OK, I checked the video again -- the logo on the shark's tail is the same as the one that Locke spots on the wall upon entering descending from the hatch. It's also the same one that Kate sees on all of the food containers in the pantry. The center of the logo looks like a swan's neck forming a sort of yin-yang symbol.

Wow, good eye on that Klath! I could barely even see there was a shark there, let alone the rest :)
Did anyone see what kind of medicine Desmond was taking in last week's episode? I've tried freeze-framing it on my DVR, but all I can make out is "For Injection Only" and then the name is right underneath that, but illegible on my TV.
For digital cable, I sure have a crappy picture some times :(

09-30-2005, 01:44 PM
Wow! Good catch, Klath. :D I know she really peered hard at that food, I was wondering what the big deal was, figuring perhaps she's just a real thing for candy.
I didn't see anything about the medicine. I figured he has some weird ass highly contagious disease and he'd turn into a polar bear if he didn't get his meds.
But... something just occurred to me!
The "Contagious" sign faced inward. And he seemed a little paranoid about people getting sick, also a little surprised there are people alive out there. hmmmm
Klath
09-30-2005, 03:11 PM
I couldn't make it out the writing on the medicine container either. :(
I noticed that Kate grabbed a bunch of Apollo bars from the pantry. They were popular in Australia during the 70s. The tune that Desmond keeps playing is "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" which was popular in '69. This makes me wonder about how long Desmond has been underground and whether he is the same Desmond that Jack met on the stadium steps. On the other hand, I suppose it's possible that whoever stocked his pad had some sort of a retro fetish. :)
Panamah
09-30-2005, 03:27 PM

Well, there are limitations to how young you can make people look on TV. Maybe Desmond is nuts. He certainly looks it.

It was a bear of some sort, didn't get a good look at it though.
Since the episode was on 2 days ago, I'll dispense with the spoilers :)
What's with him having to enter that code in the computer every 108 minutes (or hours?). I remember an old Outer Limits I think where a guy was in a missile silo with a doomsday weapon or something and every so many hours they would send him a signal he had to reply to so that NORAD would know he was still alive. This certainly reminded me of that.
When Desmond first met Jack on the steps of the stadium, they never really said how long ago that was did they? I don't think it was all that long ago, but it could have been a couple years I guess. Maybe the island is some kind of time warp :)
Tinsi
09-30-2005, 05:19 PM

Please don't. Us Euro's aren't allowed to air it for a few weeks in order to allow for the US breaks for unimportant stuff like superbowl etc without ending up ahead of the US airing. So only evil Euro pirates get to see any of season2 for a few more weeks.

Who thinks Desmond is correct about the magnet thing? I sort of think he is, this is why all these things are crashing into the island, it screws up their compasses.
But... wait! That old ship, The Black Rock, crashed a long time ago, so perhaps not.
Here's a question, how did Desmond end up on the island? I didn't catch that.
Kerech
10-10-2005, 11:34 AM

He was in a solo around-the-world boat race and crashed there.
As for the Black Rock, old time ships still used compasses to navigate, so an electromagnetic anomaly like this would screw them up to.
Panamah

Yeah, but I was hypothesizing that the electromagnetic disturbance was caused by that funky group's experiment, it happened before the funky group came into existence.

Klath, I saw Cube last night.
One thing that struck me was how the start of Cube was identical to the start of Lost or visa versa, with the closeup of an eye and a guy regaining consciousness.
Cube spoiler:
Now, the ending was entirely unclear. Once he got out of the cube, we have no idea where he was still.
And there was the premise that the entire cube was simply a huge project with no one running it. So is that what you were speculating the Island is?
Klath
10-19-2005, 12:36 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the island was but I was thinking more abstractly. Given that it's the process of trying to make sense of the things that have happened that keeps us interested, any ending that sums everything up is going to destroy that process and leave us feeling letdown. So, unless they manage to come up with something spectacularly creative, I bet that Lost will end very similarly to Cube. Also, given that it is television, a sufficiently nebulous ending leaves them with the option of tacking on another season. :)
Panamah
10-19-2005, 12:50 PM
There certainly are a lot of similarities between the two. Like everyone in the cube having a purpose....
Hey, did you know Jack was supposed to have been killed in the first season? But I guess that got nixed, but the authors wanted to have him end up in the tree, instead of the pilot. But people thought it would piss off the audience too much. :p
Maybe Jack will end up like the cop in Cube! The hero figure gone bad.
You're probably right, Klath. That was one of the things that always pissed me off about Twin Peaks and that vampire series... Knight something. They had no choice but to end with something abstract because there were too many weird things happening to really explain and keep it believable. Knowing this is what will happen, almost certainly, kind of makes me not like the show because I know what they're going to do. They'll keep layering on weirdness and semi-resolve it, but not really, then some totally artificial thing that explains nothing will end the show.
Nimchip
10-20-2005, 12:52 AM
Has any long standing television series ever have a satisfactory ending? Ever?
It's way too soon for me to expect an ending IMO. But yea, I know for sure that the ending will be dissapointing. Oh well, doesn't matter to me as long as they keep me entertained and so far they've achieving that. :)
Actually to give an example: The X-Files. That was my favorite TV series ever. It just... went bad... executives try to squeeze series out for money and it leaves em dry. However, I still love the X-Files. But yea, Lost is quickly rising to X-Files side as one of my favorite TV series.

Hmmm... now that you mention it, the only ones I can even remember seeing were Twin Peaks and that vampire one. You're right. They're all unsatisfactory. You've either got to marry off the characters, kill 'em or do something totally freaky.

It won't be Locke, he's too interesting and mysterious. It won't be Hurley, everyone loves him too much. It won't be Claire, she's a new Mom and probably Concerned Women of America would start a boycott or something. It'll probably be some minor character... like Arzt was.
Jin doesn't seem all that interesting, maybe it'll be him.
I'd say Rose but no, I don't think so now.
I really like how they killed off Arzt.

Some clues, but possible spoilers on who gets kicked off: (ie has more to do with real life than the show)
I heard, over the summer, that someone was in contract disputes with the creators of the show. Basically, he thought he deserved more money than he was getting. Instead of giving in, they pulled a Three's Company and said, "Well, if you think you're worth that much, you can just go someplace else." From what I read, I know it's going to be a guy. I also know it's not Hurley because he was talking about someone leaving the show and, when asked who it was going to be, said, "I'm not going to say, because I don't want to be next."
I've sort of been thinking it's going to be Sayid since he's barely been in the season at all so far.
My theories:
I think Sawyer is just too obvious. They wouldn't show that much of it if it was going to be him in my opinion. However, if he does have an infection in his shoulder, it does seem they've really been leading up to killing him off. Plus, they do have a new hardass on the show (Ana Lucia) who could easily fill his role. Still, I think it's too obvious for the show.
I wouldn't mind them killing off Jack or Michael though.

Yeah, that was an awesome line. He had a good one in this last episode too but I can't remember what it was.
Jin doesn't seem all that interesting, maybe it'll be him.
I think they are saving up some interesting stuff for him and Sun. There will be some sort of perverse twist with them just as there was with the others. Whatever they do, they need to have Sun spending more time on the beach in her bikini. Yeah, that's the ticket! :)

I think...
Shannon, that african guy, Sayid (which would make me a sad SAD SAD panda cause I like his character very much).... or Charlie again (which would make me a sad sad panda too) :(
I agree with Cantatus that Sawyer is just waaaaay too obvious.
There's a lot going on with Michael and Walt right now to just kill them off. Jack is the central character I thought... and though it would be kinda anti-cliche... it's still kinda wrong.
Claire, well maybe. But I don't think so.

Jack has more or less fallen into a secondary role this season. He wasn't even in this week's episode, for example. I'd say Locke, Hurley and Sawyer have been the most important ones this season so far.
I'm not exactly sure they'd want to kill off Jack though. They've been building up this rivalry between him and Locke - Reality vs. Fate - for some time now. He's still fairly important in that regard. Although, I'm sure they could easily move someone like Sayid or even Ana Lucia into that position.

Anyone care to conjecture what "the thing" is? It sounded mechanical. In fact, it kind of reminded me, sound-wise, of those mechanical things made by Nemesis in City of Heroes. A bit of a steam engine sounds with chains rattling. It seems to toss around trees but you can't see it. So that makes me think it is underground.
Cantatus

My friend and I were counting how many episodes were 'dedicated' to character backstories as we were convinced that one of the characters with less backstory would get killed. Anyway it looks like Jack has 3-4 episodes, Locke has 3 episodes, Kate has 3 (4 maybe), Sayid has 3, Sun and Jin have 3, Michael and Walt have 3, Sawyer has 2 (or 3), Charlie has 3, Hurley has 3, Claire has 1... Shannon has... 1 or 2 if you count her with Boone's flashbacks.
But if it's a man that's getting killed.. I still think Sawyer is way too obvious. Lately been thinking on maybe a stubborn actor like Charlie or Ana Lucia which have been in movies :(

Maybe "the thing" moves through some subterranean uh... subway. It did sort of look like there are these hatches. Remember when Locke was nearly pulled down one? And the tail section survivors seem to have found a hatch thing.

Panamah:
Two groups of survivors, one from the front of the plane, including Shannon, and one from the back of the plane with Sawyer, Sayid, et al, came upon each other in the jungle unexpectedly in a driving rainstorm. There's a gunshot, the two groups see each other and you see Ana pointing a gun at Shannon as Shannon falls to the ground with a bullet wound just below her chest.
It *looks* like Ana shot her, and Sayid certainly *thinks* Ana shot her (and boy was he pissed). But we didn't actually see her pull the trigger.

Kate hasn't ever felt like a real believable character to me. Her cutesy elven looks don't really seem to go along with her abilities. But then again, perhaps that is part of the conumdrum that is Kate.

Back in the late '80s or early '90s, I saw this really bad ninja movie on HBO. It was one where the spirit of a murdered ninja took possession of this young hot aerobics instructor and sought revenge on the ones who had killed him. The movie was bad, but the girl made it worth watching :)
Literally the next weekend, I went to a family reunion and there was a guy there who I had never met. Turned out he was my dad's cousin and they hadn't seen each other in 20 years or something. He kept talking about his daughter who was a fitness instructor in Hollywood and how she'd made this ninja movie a while back. Eventually I asked him the name of the movie... you guessed it: I had been drooling over a distant relative :tut:

I'm not sad to see Rodriguez go but I liked Watros' character. After reading over a few fan sites I got the feeling that Rodriguez wasn't doing a whole lot of acting in order be Ana Lucia. The sullen sneer she perpetually dons may just be Rodriguez being Rodriguez.

Alas, no. But there is a dog and a polar bear. The latter may well be an ideal love interest for Hurley. I don't think a dog/Hurley tryst will happen -- the dog would almost certainly go the way of Adriana's dog on The Soprano's. If you haven't seen that episode of The Soprano's, well, lets just say it didn't end well for the dog.

I'm not sure...
...Libby is actually dead. They haven't done a flashback for her yet, and we know she was in the insane asylum with Hurley, so that still remains to be explored.
One theory I saw over at Graffe's (and my own belief as well) is that this attack will re-trigger Libby's psychosis, or whatever she was in the institution for. Maybe she'll become catatonic and not be able to tell anyone what happened. Hurley will see her like that and remember where he saw her before.
I'm pretty sure Ana is a goner though - I'd heard she was difficult to work with.
