I got 13 out of 20. I missed fake smiles more than I missed genuine ones.

I tried not to ask about many of those people. I'm sure I'd look just as odd to them.

18/20. 1 fake, 1 genuine.

The reposing to the blank expression after the smile using the video/computer editor kept throwing me off.

And thanks for the link, I was trying to remember the name of the system for decerning micro facial clues,,,

Scientists distinguish between genuine and fake smiles by using a coding system called the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), which was devised by Professor Paul Ekman of the University of California and Dr Wallace V. Friesen of the University of Kentucky.

I got 17 out of 20 and I was a bit surprised to have done that well. The main thing I cued off was the eyes.

So, is this smile real or fake:

I was actually unaware that we were allowed to view the videos before guessing. I went back and did it again, this time watching the videos before wagering my guess. This time I got 16/20. I tried to space it far enough after my first attempt. I honestly didn't recall any of the answers from my first test.

I think the people with real smiles still had hints of happiness on their faces after they reposed. Just my observations.

Alwind.

That's what I was looking for too.

All the videos I saw all ended back at the same face they started with.
They were not fully finished smiles, start to finish.

Klath, that isn't a smile at all. It looks like he has gas. He'd be perfect for the supreme court... those robes will billow.

That is a poker smile, fake all the way. He's bluffing.

And he has beady eyes as well.

rofl -- that's disgusting. You may have a point though, he looks like he's holding his breath.

And he has beady eyes as well.
Yeah, very beady. Clearly up to no good. The little that I've read about him seems to confirm that.

15/20... I got worse the more I saw. Had the first 9 right. My mind was starting to focus on statistics... e.g. if the last three were genuine, this one must be fake. That did me in.

15 of 20. I guess that's not too bad. I think my downfall was trying to figure out how scientists knew that the people weren't faking the "real" smiles while I was watching them.

I was thinking that too. But what I think they probably did was tell people to "smile" versus engage them in conversation, or tell them jokes, and get a smile.

The downfall for me is that these weren't in real situations. I was trying to look at the after effects more than the smile itself. But cause these weren't real sitautions, you can't really tell based on the after effect (do they still look happy? or not?).

People can be easily read, but their actions before and afterwards are just as important as a specific one in question.

I got 13/20, I usually do good when talking to people, but just smiling and fake smiling I was haveing trouble figuing out. The video was no help in some and the lady with the "fangs" thew me off totally.

Yes, true, usually. There are some pretty nasty personality disorders out there that can really confuse your radar though. Try looking up "Narcissistic Personality Disorder" sometime. I had the pleasure of having to work closely with one once... *shiver*

You got 18 out of 20 correct

While I watch the eyes, I was mostly looking at the totality of the gesture, did the smile involve more than the mouth (e.g. a shake of the head). Also, how they stopped smiling ended up being the biggest indicator for me. if they could stop easily and quickly, it was a fake smile to me. If the stopping was accompanied by other facial or body gestures (e.g. an embarrassed shrug), then it was genuine to me.
