goes by the name of Pigwidgeon, the green cheek conure.

Here are pictures of the latest addition to our family.

For those who don't own birds, a couple of comments. One thing many birds do when they want attention is to hunker down and bob their heads up and down very quickly. Most birds also love to bathe. Pig took a couple of tries before she really got the hang of the whole bathing thing, but now seems like she's really getting into it. Of course, afterwards they look like they've just come out of the spin cycle.

After bathing, they do a tremendous amount of grooming and preening, including much shaking of feathers. They also will wipe their faces and scrape their beaks on hard surfaces to clean their heads off.

That being said, enjoy!

Nice birdie! A friend has a parrot who gets shower time. She tosses him in the shower and turns the water on for him. Leaves him in there for maybe 30 minutes at a time. He's a talker, too... and parrots mimic the voice that taught them the word or phrase that they say so he has about 4 or 5 people in him. It sounds like a regular party in the shower when he's bathing! :D

I see you found a use for a silverplate bowl! :)
**edit** or maybe that's a glass dish.. hm. If it is, then I still contend that silverplate is useless.

If you push the next button really fast its like a home movie. Tai's expression on getting his ear nibbled is funny. Does he do that when you nibble his ear? :)

She's really pretty and seems to have quite a personality. Congrats on the new family member!

I think my next pet will be a rat.

Rats are bad pets. A friend of a friend owned some and my friend looked after them one holiday. Never again, not after it ate a hole in its cage.

Birds much nicer.

No, rats are sweet! I met a pet rat, he was owned by a pair of very young kids and he let them cart him around everywhere. He runs over to you when you stand by the side of his cage and checks you out. They're smart, you can house break them. They kind of hang out on your shoulder, like birds do.

When Indy leaves me, I'll get a kitten and a rat, and raise them together. :)

Sorry, silver plate is still useless. For parrots, very few metals are safe for them because they can shave off bits of them and eat it, resulting in heavy metal poisoning (which, despite the rumors, is not caused by listening to too much bad '80s hair bands).

The dish in there is an 10x10" pyrex baking pan. It's the perfect size as it just barely fits through the door to her cage, and it is wide enough for her to spread her wings all the way out, while still being shallow enough that she'll step into it. I have heard of birds who loved any kind of bathing, and would bathe in drinking glasses full of just about anything if allowed. Their owners had to keep a really close eye on them.

My old parrot LOVED the shower. He would shriek with joy, to the point that I simply couldn't bring him in there anymore. The pain and subsequent temporary deafness wasn't worth it. But he also got a bath once a week on cage cleaning day.

Does he do that when you nibble his ear?

Only if I draw blood ;)

Yes, lets bring home a vector for the Plague!

LOL! Well, Jinjre just brought home a potential H5N1 carrier. :p

Birds sound like a lot of fun to have but the changes I'd have to make would be painful.

Actually, that brings up an issue. I've always worried about what would happen to my pets when I pass away. I wouldn't necessarily trust any of my relatives with them. My sister's idea of an ideal pet is a brick.

Thankfully, Pig's lifespan is only 20-30 years. But yeah, the bigger birds can live to be 80-120 years old and are often willed to another bird lover by the 'parents'.

You can always will them to us Pan. You wouldn't be the first person to do so. God forbid all our friends die in one plane wreck, we'll have to build an ark if they do!

We got the results of the blood sexing test yesterday. Turns out she's a he.

At least we won't have any problems with egg binding.

Hello Mr. Pig! Well, guess you won't be nicknaming him Miss Piggy. :p

I keep wanting to say "That'll do Pig" to him, especially when he grooms me a bit aggressively.

Oh yeah! Babe! :D You can always say, "Pork is a fine sweet meat", when you're threatening him. Or call him "Pig of Destiny!" :) My friend and I call each other that for some reason.

Once his flight feathers grow back in, I suppose he could be a Piiiig Iiiiiiin Spaaaaaaaaccce! (I love the Muppet Show!)

Iagoe and I are eagerly anticipating being landed on wherever we are, especially given that so far Pig has shown all the grace of a hippo on rollerskates. He routinely misses his mark and falls off of flat surfaces or runs into things. I'm hoping the lack of coordination is simply that he's still young (not a year old yet).
