From our commander-in-chief (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/01/20060120-5.html):

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Sunday, January 22, 2006, as National Sanctity of Human Life Day. I call upon all Americans to recognize this day with appropriate ceremonies and to reaffirm our commitment to respecting and defending the life and dignity of every human being.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twentieth day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

I'll just assume all my presents from you guys are in the mail.

I celebrated by cleaning out several green, furry life-forms from my refrigerator and culturing several more intentionally in my yogurt maker.

Oh wait... sanctity of human life... microbes don't count then.

I celebrated by not sending a mail bomb to a client who called me this morning, kept me on speaker phone for over an hour, at least one-quarter of which time was spent by me listening to him type while he lost his train of thought as to what he had called me for in the first place.

Does that count?

On a more rational note, I wonder if this sanctity of life thing carries over to the death penalty, or are only certain people's lives still sanct?

(yes, I know "sanct" isn't a word, it's being used intentionally for literary purposes of sarcasm)

LOL! Actually a friend sent me a quote from a warden. I don't think I still have it but it was about the hypothetical question of, if a death row inmate had a heart attack would they revive him to be put to death.

His answer was something like "Yes, we respect the santicty of life". :p

Oh gosh, found the quote: http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/01/17/allen.death.ap/index.html

Having suffered a heart attack back in September, Allen had asked prison authorities to let him die if he went into cardiac arrest before his execution, a request prison officials said they would not honor.

"At no point are we not going to value the sanctity of life," said prison spokesman Vernell Crittendon. "We would resuscitate him," then execute him.

That's the same reason that they swab an inmate's arm with an alcohol pad before giving him a lethal injection :)

Can people on death row not sign DNRs?

If the offender is of sound mind they can sign DNR's for themselves. However, if the offender is found not to be of sound mind, they cannot and the state does not do it.

I work for City/County hospital (like Cook County) and we get all prisoners. There have been many times when we had to continue all forms of resucitation, knowing the prisoner was going to die, but couldnt make him a DNR.

At least in Indiana this is how it works - not sure about Federal Prisoners. I do not think they can sign DNR's as that is considered a "right" and prisoners have no rights - heh.

It sounds like in that particular place they wouldn't respect the DNR.

I can see it now, a new pick-up line. "Hey baby, its Sanctity of Life Day. Lets celebrate."

LOL

... reminds of a movie scene where a biker says. "Hey baby, you like peanut butter, I like peanut butter. We have something in common. Let's breed."
