Hi guys, sorry to ask again, every couple of years I seem to need help with this. This time it's for my daughter's machine. She has an ASUS
P5P800 motherboard with a 460 power supply (incase I need to do something with that) and had a PNY Nvidia G-Force FX 5900, 128MB video card in it. The machine is a P4 3.0. We found what we thought would be a nice upgrade for her on sale yesterday as it was past time to upgrade, but this card doesn't fit the motherboard slot it is a e-GeForce 7600GT 256MB card. Is it the difference in the 128MB and 256MB that causes the problem with the slot? Where can I find information on which cards will be compatible with her machine?

I really appreciate your patience with me over these things, I just never get any better with them and I did try to read the motherboard book before buying, sigh. Thanks in advance for any help.

It looks like you'll need a new mobo.

On a quick search I couldnt find the specs on the gpu but im willing to bet its pci x16. Which the mobo is not.

I love ASUS and always get them as my mobo's. Just make sure if thats the problem and your getting a new one that it has the correct slots.

Notice on the description they will mention PCI express x1 and x16 and how many of each the mobo has.

Hope this helps.

You need an AGP card, below is a link to a Toms Hardware guide, at the end are the AGP cards. Good Hunting

Thank you ToKu for replying. Is there no decent Nvidia video card that will fit this motherborad now? I mean am I better off keeping this card and getting a new motherboard or finding a card that will fit her existing board?

You'll need an AGP video card to fit your old motherboard. The problem is, it's a dead standard most new video cards use the newer PCI Express slot.

If you're on a budget but the 5900 is too slow, you can still pick up a 7600GS with an AGP interface for about $125 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048+1069609639+1305520548+106790717&Subcategory=48&description=&srchInDesc=) to tide you over until you can do a proper motherboard/CPU/video card upgrade.

However, if you're thinking of upgrading the whole system soon anyway, I wouldn't get a throwaway AGP card now.
