Here come the bancakes!

Seriously though I wonder why the feck anyone would bother doing this, GMs obviously can find out who was doing the 'summoning' and looting the items. Also at least on the Rathe, the GMs don't take to kindly to Ninja looters--

Why do people have to be so stupid? Do they not understand that in EQ you leave a log of everything you do?

grrr!

Can you believe they've got people already doign Seru on STromm? Isn't that the new newbie server? /boggle

I really question this. I always figured dup'ing would be the instant-ban for anyone doing it. Yet I've known people that ended up with duplicate corpses by accident and they looted them... never reported it. They're all here. Absolutely nothing hapened to them.

They might record a lot of information, but I don't think they're tracking anything all that closely.

I don't think the FoH boards said anything about duplicating corpses, just about them summoning the corpse somewhere so they could loot what they wanted then place the corpse back after they got done with the ninja.

I am sure a /petition about some player doing the ninja will get some attention and they will then look at character logs and such.

I was just drawing a comparison between what I always figured was an insta-ban, duping, and this exploit.

Yeah, this is sure to be a little more obvious and draw attention to the ne'er do well. Another good reason for instanced zones!

Stupid people have to hack everything. Is only a game so like play fair.

No you dont leave a trail of everything you do. However, all trades, dropped items, and corpse loots are logged. The trick is, of course, finding the record and somehow determining that this was not the right person doing the looting.

So context is important. If something like this happens to you make sure to include as many details as you can possibly think of in your petition or /bug or whatever.

Seems like a big loophole, hope they get it closed soon.

Quote:
However, all trades, dropped items, and corpse loots are logged.[/quote] Not entirely true, there's loopholes you can use on test to get past some the logging. You prolly already know that from some of the xeg shady chars running around tho.

Seru isn't hard at all. 65 made him a pure gimp.

As far as hackers, I wish people could just play the game and not have the urge to cheat every 5 seconds.

"Er... no, no you don't. "

Actually, yes you do. Most things aren't retained more than a couple hours though due to space limitations. Hence the need for /report and such.

There isn't anything in the game that can't be monitored, assuming someone cares enough to actually look.

On Stromm, AoW, at least 2 Seru, the Burrower, And for some unknown reason a ton of regular PoV mobs(about 20 from my group alone) have all been looted by this hack. Gms were helpful on 1 Seru steal and they are still loooking into it on the others. the hackers are getting smarter about this and doing it when GMs aren't on and probably wont be on for a while.

Also, FYI, Cypher on Stromm is now in the elemental plains.

And I thought there was only a couple guilds into the elemental planes on Drinal. Tunare help us if these Stromm folks decided to play on our server.

Not defending cheaters ... But stupid people can't hack anything. You'd have to be pretty smart to mess with memory addresses.

The first person that figures it out is smart, the rest are just good at following instructions.

<laughs> Well said.

This has been fixed in the latest build. It couldn't be promoted to live servers as of the last update, as the rewrite of the item system and character storage was still being tested from the rewrite to handle item augmentations for Lost Dungeons.

It'll go next time. Should be perfectly smooth. Only two or three large chunks of EverQuest were mostly/completely rewritten. People wouldn't really miss things like "characters" or "items" if they didn't work... right? ;)

One nice thing about the cost of hard drive space, to address an earlier comment.

We have quite a few logs that go back a lot farther than two hours, and anyone who's capable of doing this is absolutely being detected.

Really just not a good idea, all in all.

I thought hours sounded nuts as you could go back at least a week a couple years ago and I don't think that even included what was archived.

Text files compress really well.

if you guys supposedly have these logs that go back so far, why is it that when items poof, there is MAYBE a 50/50 chance that when the GM responds to the petition, that the "poof" in question can be found?

the other day i sold about 4 stacks of acrylia to some guy who put it in a norent bag and went LD before he had a chance to stick in in the bank...GM said, "nothing in the logs, so sorry"

WTF?

Have you ever looked through a busy log trying to find one anomylous event?

Hey Loegan....Come back to EV!!! Hehe!!

Just my 2 cp as regards logs and EQ: Over 8 months ago I deleted and cancelled the account of my warrior. He was 45 and what with our guild raiding practically every day of the week, I found no time to play him until about a month ago. I missed the Barb warrior and so thought I would recreate the account and create another warrior. Well, I created a wizard instead and played him for about an hour before deciding to petition to restore my warrior. I knew the chances were very slim but, what the hey...I gave it a shot. Within 4 hours, my level 45 warrior was restored. But here is the kicker...he was restored to a point to just before I gave a friend a bag of items I had been holding for her. I was told to destroy the bag once restoration was complete. I did. My warrior is now level 53 and I play him at least one night a week. So, yes, logs are kept for more than a couple hours.

Sorry for the longwinded tale but I thought it was worth it.

grep is your friend. Any good SysAdmin can plow through the logs in a flash looking for something specific. Of course their servers are probably Windows boxen but you can still install unix-like utilities to help out.
