Well, I was wrong. Foreign citizens do deserve the full protection of our laws...again, for our own citizen's good.

What's good for the Goose... (http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=domesticNews&storyID=2006-11-02T130451Z_01_HAN309066_RTRUKOC_0_US-VIETNAM-USA-ARRESTS.xml&src=110206_0843_ARTICLE_PROMO_also_on_reuters)

So now, US citizens are being held, without charge or trial, for some 13 months on a charge of "terrorism" in Vietnam...and their congressional representative wants them to be charged or released.

Five years ago we had the moral grounds to make such demands. We've now rendered our citizens defenseless against such foreign tyrrany.

Chickens, geese, you are making me hungry.

In all fairness, it is Viet Nam. I would not go there because of the risks.

If those Americans who are in Viet Nam have not factored in those risks, then they were just stupid for going there.

I would not go to Angola or Venezuela either, and a couple dozen other countries, not even counting the Mid East.

Hell, remember the kid who got caught in Thailand, and had to be caned in the public square? Our entreaties back then fell on deaf ears. And that was before your 5 years thing.

Every country has a Midnight Express quotient, which should be evaluated before going there.

And now, there's more and more risk assosiated with visiting the US. Same thing. Which was Aidon's point.

Vietnam, actually, is one of the most liberal and fastest growing Asian economies, moving swiftly towards improved relations with the US and a free market economy. Its one of the new hotspots of the far east.

If those Americans who are in Viet Nam have not factored in those risks, then they were just stupid for going there.

You need disabuse yourself of this notion that just because you think people did something stupid that they do not deserve protections.

Hell, remember the kid who got caught in Thailand, and had to be caned in the public square? Our entreaties back then fell on deaf ears. And that was before your 5 years thing.

But we had a moral ground to stand on, as we do not cane people. Plus he was still tried and convicted.

Every country has a Midnight Express quotient, which should be evaluated before going there.

Immaterial to the discussion at hand, which is that we've lost all standing for complaint or threat of sanction when a nation denies a US citizen the basic protections we, theoretically, used to ensure ourself.

Pretty sure that was Singapore.

Yup! The old grey matter might not be quite what she used to be but she is still working pretty well! http://www.corpun.com/awfay9405.htm
