I found it interesting... I was a bit surprised by the fact that there is a KKK group in my state since I've never seen sheets anywhere but on beds. The Neo-Nazi group in Haverhill was surprising too. It being the next town over from me, and never having seen evidence. I'm not saying it's incorrect information, just that it surprised me.
Turns out there is a KKK group in Northern New Hampshire too. I imagine those meetings are pretty personal. "Ok guys, we really need to do something about Mike."

The most populous states have more. I think it'd be more interesting to look at it by population. It'd make the South look pretty bad. Some of the East coast states are a surprise.
I used to hear about them a lot in CA but for the last few years I haven't. We still hear about hate crimes being committed fairly often. Usually a few gays get beaten up in San Diego just after the Gay Pride parade. Every now and then a racially motivated beating/murder happens.
We had a big movement in San Diego back in the 90's. I don't think they called themselves the KKK though. Oh yeah, "Aryan Nation". And the movement has changed, they don't burn crosses on people's lawns and dress in sheets anymore. They were shaving their heads (Skin heads anyone?) but probably that has changed to something else now.
Interesting, if you click on the map you can see what movements are where. In the south it is a big Neo-confederate movement.

I agree that the south looks pretty bad compaired to most. Florida in particular looks worse than CA considering population. The most popular hate groups being Neo-Confederate. On the other hand, NY has noticably fewer hate groups than CA even taking population into account. CA is 36 million people and 52 hate groups, NY is 19 million people and 19 hate groups.
At least it can't be broken down to a "red state vs blue state" thing easlily.

Maybe its related to the age of population. Both CA and FL are attractive retirement states. But then again... I don't think you'd find a lot of geriatrics interested in joining a hate group. :p

Wow...supposedly the only hate group in Alaska is the Jewish Defense League...I wouldn't have thought there were enough Jews in Alaska to form a minyan, let alone a hate group...not that I really consider the JDL on par with the Aryan Nation or KKK or Nation of Islam.

What's interesting is that NM, VT, RI and ME have 0 hate groups. :D Vermont and ME I would expect. But the other two are surprising.

Well, keep in mind that both Vermont and Maine are one big group on their own. They just aren't organized. These are communities where you are definately an outsider unless your parents were born there.
Ok, it's not the same thing, but I've always been amused at regional differences in the area. I've been called a flatlander by locals many times when visiting my sister in Norther New England. There are many places where you are treated as an outsider by people in towns even if you moved there 20 years ago.

Huh...we have a Neo-Confederate hate group ("League of the South") in western New York?

Jewish Defense League and California Coalition for Immigration Reform?
Gimme a break, who put this silly list together?
And La Raza is not even listed.

According to the site, California is full of neo-nazi groups, but in all the time I've lived here, I don't think I've ever heard a single thing about them. Supposedly there's even a group right here in San Francisco. I guess they just keep to themselves.

I have never seen one either.
I have met and seen white racists, don't get me wrong; just never one who was in any form of organized group.
I have met people who were in Nation of Islam and La Raza though.

La Raza isn't a hate group. And I've never even heard of "Jewish Defense League," whatever that is.

La Raza isn't a hate group.
Yes it is.
Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada
For the Race, everything. For those outside the Race, nothing
That is more racist and hateful than a bunch of anti-illegal alien dip****s or anti-NAZI Jews.
It is as racist as any klan/aryan motto.

The FBI considers JDL to be a terrorist organization so perhaps the person who put the list together got it from them.
The Anti-Defamation league lists some of the things that JDL has been involved with on their site as does the FBI.

Its been a big thing in So CA for quite awhile. Here's a listing of hate crimes this year in CA. Some are close to the SF area: http://www.splcenter.org/intel/hatewatch/fortherecord.jsp

For the Race, everything. For those outside the Race, nothingIt's racist, but not a hate group. It's also benign, unlike hate groups. Big differences there.
I guess by your definition, the United Negro College Fund and NAACP are hate groups, but not by mine or the average person's.

If there were neo-nazis here in San Francisco, I'd expect to hear about incidents, since the City is less than 50% white (let alone Aryan), and of course has a large openly gay population.

rac‧ism /ˈreɪsɪzəm/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[rey-siz-uhm] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Now we're down to dictionary games? By "racist" I only mean their assistance is limited to members of their own race. They don't think their race is superior or hate other races.
There's nothing wrong with directing your charity only towards members of your own race, particularly if your race is in greater need compared to the rest of society.

I'm not surprised. The National Front used to be big in Victoria and Vancouver, just north of the border. In Victoria it finally ended in a showdown where the local punks got drove the nazi-skinheads out of town in a bloody brawl in the 80s. The newspaper reported it as "drug related gang violence." I doubt any average citizens ever had a clue.

I wonder what kind of hate groups you think are supposed to be in New Mexico?
Anyway, I don't know who put the list together but some white friends of my Uncle were burned out of Taos for the sole fact that they were white. It isn't all love here.
Down here by the border, nobody seems to much care if your are purple or green or brown or white. So long as you aren't an idiot.
Hey, they don't have dem haters and rep haters on the list. That should double every states hate group list.

The same sort as in the neighboring states, most likely.
