It would be more physics than chemistry. So far as I know, the explosion has nothing to do with chemical reaction and is related to carbon dioxide and surface area in ways I may have understood in 11th grade but surely don't any longer.

I just tried this with another surfactant (granulated dish detergent) and got similar, although less spectacular, results. I'm guessing that part of the reason that it wasn't as violent a reaction is that the granules seemed to dissolve slower.
