Ok, so it was announced a few weeks ago and I'm a little late, but I just heard this. Apparently Jackson and the studios are having a tiff about the money from the first LOTR films and won't discuss any new films until it's settled (<a href="http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=filmNews&storyID=2006-11-21T023200Z_01_N20323824_RTRIDST_0_FILM-LEISURE-JACKSON-DC.XML&WTmodLoc=NewsArt-C2-NextArticle-1">Linkage</a>). So since New Line has a deadline to meet, it looks like they're dropping Jackson because they can't wait for him.
Sucks

Very disappointing. Given all of the crappy versions of LotR and The Hobbit that have been done in the past it appears that Jackson is the only one who is capable of doing it right.

I won't be watching or buying it, then.
Jackson is the only one to have done it right. I have all three Extended Release LOTR DVD's in their 4 hour long glory sitting on the top of my TV, looking like leatherbound books, but I never got the Gollum bookends.
Also, even though I didn't think I'd like King Kong, with Jackson directing, it turned out ok.

I skipped the super-amazing-uber-collector's-editions of each of the movies until Return of the King, I just knew that there would be a single box set of the Extended versions released, and I just wanted to grab that instead of the version with all the trinkets and 800hrs of extras that I'd probably never watch. Besides, I thought the Gollum statue looked weird. However the Miras Tirith bookends were neat (still didn't get them though!)
I didn't really like King Kong... I think Jack Black (while I liked him in a few other things) just detracted from the movie too much for me. Oh, and again Seaman Gollum was just weird.
I know they were pre-LOTR, but I sort of wish that Jackson was able to do the last two Matrix movies - or even better, maybe a William Goldman / Peter Jackson duo to do the Star Wars "prequels" justice.

If Jackson did it, who would he have set up as Bilbo's gay love interest?
That is what I want to know.
That whole last episodes homo erotic overtones were undeniable and inescapable.

Hobbits aren't afraid to show affection, unlike homophobes.
People have made much of Sam and Frodo's relationship, but if you read the books, Sam and Frodo's relationship was handled very true to the original story.
Sam was J.R.R. Tolkien's version of the English tradition of the "batman," an English officer's faithful sidekick that fed, clothed, and served as a man's ever-present butler and companion. Perhaps there is a hint of homo-eroticism there, but people have made much more of it than is warranted.
Not to say I haven't chuckled at some of the animated gif's on various web sites.

I suppose that English officers require constant hobbit oral chubby care.

Was that an attempt to cynical, sarcastic or funny?

All of the above?
I'm sorry, but the movie went far beyond what the novel ever suggested. Frodo and Sam may as well started tag teaming Gollum in the middle of RotK for as blatantly homosexual as they were becoming. I half expected Sam to bring out boy butter instead of lambas everytime he went into his pack.
