Flatulence leads US jet to divert

An American Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Nashville after passengers reported the smell of sulphur from burning matches.

The matches were found on the seat of a woman who had attempted to conceal the odour of flatulence with the matches, Nashville airport authorities said.

All 99 passengers and five crew left the plane while it was searched.

The woman was questioned by the FBI but released without charge and allowed to board another American Airlines flight.

"It was determined that she was trying to conceal body odour," said Lynne Lowrance of the Nashville Airport Authority.

She had "no malicious intent but had struck matches which is against [Transport Security Administration] rules," Ms Lowrance said.

The unidentified woman had an unspecified medical condition, Associated Press news agency said.

She was carrying safety matches, which the TSA allows in carry-on luggage.

The matches are not allowed to be struck, however.

LOL! That's what my sister does when she has a BM in the bathroom. She was over for Thanksgiving and asked me for matches. Later I found a burnt out match in the bathroom. :p

That's hilarious. I've had the displeasure of sitting next to a serial-farter on a long flight -- yuck! The airlines should create non-flatulent sections with activated carbon ventilation systems.

I'm surprised she wasn't charged under the Patriot Act and threatened with 20 years in prison, like this couple (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061114/ts_alt_afp/ussexcrimeoffbeat_061114235323):Mid-flight sexual play lands US couple afoul of anti-terrorism law

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A couple's ill-concealed sexual play aboard a Southwest Airlines flight from Los Angeles got them charged with violating the Patriot Act, intended for terrorist acts, and could land them in jail for 20 years.

According to their indictment, Carl Persing and Dawn Sewell were allegedly snuggling and kissing inappropriately, "making other passengers uncomfortable," when a flight attendant asked them to stop.

"Persing was observed nuzzling or kissing Sewell on the neck, and ... with his face pressed against Sewell's vaginal area. During these actions, Sewell was observed smiling," reads the indictment filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

On a second warning from the flight attendant, Persing snapped back threatening the flight attendant with "serious consequences" if he did not leave them alone.

The comment was enough to have the couple, both in their early 40s, arrested when the plane reached its destination in Raleigh, North Carolina, and charged with obstructing a flight attendant and with criminal association.

They have been placed under legal surveillance until their trial on February 5. If found guilty, they both could be sent to jail for up to 20 years.

Persing's lawyer William Peregoy said his client was not feeling well when he placed his head on his companion's lap, and that he only threatened the flight attendant with reporting him to his superiors on landing.

That's because in America sex is verboten but violence isn't....

I wouldn't be embarrassed, hell, I'd be telling everyone I knew!

I took down an airplane with only the power of my fart!

Seriously, that should be on a resume or something - gotta make sure to have a copy of a newspaper article with your name though so it doesn't seem like you're lying.
