I barely do. I remember my Mom saying "Hopkins" followed by a string of numbers.

Sorry, Pan, I couldn't open your link (problem with my system, not the link).
I remember back when the first two digits of a phone number were identified with an exchange name. I even remember my childhood phone number - market 2-8416. That was a long time ago.

Its a window media player file type.
It will probably play on something that you may have on your machine, it just maybe associated incorrectly. When I get that I just save the file to disk then open it with what i want to open it with(not what FF wants to open it with).

To bad that phone number -> text thing doesn't compare it to a dictionary.

Anyone remember BR549?
LOL it was "Junior's" phone number from Hee Haw!!
What struck me one day was a sign we had at the hospital stating that cell phones were not allowed past a certain point... the sign had a picture of a phone on it with one of those cirlces and a red line through it - and the number on the "display" of the phone was BR 549!! LOL
y grandmother actually had a party line in rural Wisconsin until the mid-1970's. Her "ring" was 2 long and 2 short. Man... the memories!!

What I don't understand is why don't we have a DNS for phones? Then you just remember a name for the whole thing and a computer exchanges it for the real number. You know, like we do web pages.
No, if someone pushes this through, you don't have to pay me for the idea, which you wouldn't anyway. I'm not going to sue anyone.

Doh... I'm so old, I definitely remember that. I even remember a couple of phone numbers from my childhood.

It gets worse. Where I lived, the city core was sparsely inhabited. Phone numbers started with the name 'University'. When I got bored, I would count the number of 'University' phone numbers in the phone book. Pretty weird :)

When did people actually have time on their hands to do that? I used to count the number of people that had the same last name as me. :p
Bap, I love your DNS idea. I think every person should have 1 phone "identity" and from there you select which device to try, or you would set which device you want to ring (I hate getting cell phone calls at home due to lack of reception). Although it would probably give away more of our anonimity than lots of folks would like.

I was told once to memorize the numbers in the phonebook to exercise my photographic memory. It sounded so dull I ran right out and tried it. NOT.

When I was a kid, I remember being bored.
And reading the stuff in the front of the telephone book.
And reading about party lines, in the book.
I thought it would be great to have a phone line you could call if you wanted a party, until I had an adult try and explain the concept to me.

Nope... two tin cans and a string don't need no high-falutin' rotating mechanical/electrical doohickey.

No, but our phones had dials on them you turned with your finger!
What's really amazing is talking to someone that lived without electricity. They used to sink 50 gallon ceramic jars into the earth to keep things cool.

I still "think" the word for my aunt's number (Hopkins 7), even though I also translate it to 467 when I dial it.

hehe....It is that way where I live now. When people around here exchange phone numbers, we just give the last 4 digits, since the all are in the same exchange. I have heard they added a new exchange, but have yet to run across a newbie who has it (and I don't even know what it is....lol).

And they were practically indestructible. No one thought twice about it if the phone fell on the floor. In my house, with six kids, that happened a fair amount :)

And they were used as weapons too. One good smack to the head with a phone was enough to knock any movie villan out. Can't say that about todays phones.
