This vehicle was one of three caught under the crushing force of a 200-ton engine which fell off its transport on Harbor Drive early this morning.

SAN DIEGO – A 200-ton ship engine being transported to General Dynamics NASSCO slid off a trailer and hit three cars on Harbor Drive near 28th Street early Thursday.

The fallen engine also broke a water line and prompted the shipyard to close operations.

The engine, which was destined for a Navy ship under construction, was being carried on a tractor-trailer rig escorted by some vehicles south on Harbor Drive shortly after midnight, police said.

It was traveling about 2 to 3 mph, when it shifted and slid off the trailer. It landed on a Dodge sedan, crushed the front end of a Ford Aerostar and hit another vehicle, San Diego police Sgt. Kevin Friedman said.

It landed with enough force to break the concrete and put a small crater in the street.

NASSCO spokesman Karl Johnson said the first shift at NASSCO was cancelled, affecting about 3,000 employees, because of the broken water line. About 6,000 people in all work at the shipyard.

A city water department employee said the fallen engine broke a 16-inch cast iron water line.

Harbor Drive was closed for several hours but at least one lane reopened this morning. <img src="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/images/070726engine_fall280a.jpg">

That's similar to how my Aunt died, a truck with a load of heavy steel pipes hit her, the pipes rolled off and crushed her. :(

Gosh, I hope no one was in that auto.

No one could say how long it will take to repair the sinkhole created on Harbor Drive near 28th Street after the falling engine crushed three parked cars, broke the pavement and snapped a water line. A woman sleeping inside one of the cars received minor injuries.
