I finally got a new computer system ordered. Since we're keeping my old one for my wife to use, I need some new furniture to lay everything out on (2 desktop computers, 1 laptop, 2 printers, a scanner, etc.)

Does anyone know of a website where you can design a modular workstation layout to fit your room, then have the parts shipped to you? I've seen some sites like that with closet organizerss, but can't find one for computer furniture.

I'm looking at probably a corner unit that extends along two walls so there's plenty of work space (I work at home a lot), but the computers are still close enough together that I can use both at once in case I happen to start playing EQ again :)

Thanks!

You need to say how much you're willing to spend. Modular furniture is extremely expensive (stupidly so). If you're talking true modular, the best thing to do is hunt your local newspaper for any companies that are going out of buisiness. You can usually buy up their old cube furniture for less than 20% of the original cost. I looked at it, but ended up going with a Staples solution (http://www.elementofdarkness.com/images/member/Stormhaven/desk.jpg).

Desks on wheels... you'll never buy anything without casters ever again.

Go to your local ghettofabulous furniture stores.

Also check out WalMart, Kmart, Fry's Electronics and such...well if you have a Fry's. WalMart and KMart usually have something that is semi adjustable for around $100.

You might want to wait a few weeks too, 4th of July is coming up.

You've got a lot more stuff than I did; but, I had 2 desktop pc on a very large glass table. Plenty of room left, especially if you get those fancy flat monitors for the desktop machines. The table I am talking about was the size of your average family dining room table with both leafs in. We just threw it in a corner and it worked great.

Screw all that. Buy some six or eight foot countertops from Lowes or Home Depot and a couple 4x4x8's and a few 2x4x8's and a bunch of angle brackets. Then buy a decent computer cubbyhole organzier for cd's, paper, etc and set it atop one of em =P

Hmmm... I gotta get myself a circular saw. Maybe I can build myself a rack. I currently have about 5 computer systems, 4 are on the floor. If I could make a lowish rack, casters on the bottom, maybe 3 shelves... I could tidy things up nicely.

But first, need the saw and a nice work bench and saw horses and stuff!

I rearranged my office setup to be much more "two-box" friendly for EQ. I shopped for weeks at furniture stores, discount stores (Walmart and whatnot), and office supply stores. I was very disappointed. I also e-shopped for custom rigs and, although there are many options, found them to be ridiculously expensive. I mean like $8,000 for custom stuff. I ended up with two 5' folding tables for $39 each and then I mounted adjustable shelves I got at The Home Depot for $11 to the walls. Cheap is the way to go but don't skimp on the chair.
Dig.

p.s. if you need those adjustable keyboard trays you can buy those separate at office supply places and attach them to just about any table. that's what i did.

I used a folding table for a while - not bad at all. Seemed very spaceous.

Right now I'm working on a Antrax (I think that's what it's called) single computer desk. It barely fits my monitor, keyboard and mouse (I have to buy and use slim keyboards and currently one is almost dead and I can't find another I like =P).

If you want ad hoc furniture, really the best thing out there for a computer desk is a simple card table - as long as it's strong enough to hold your monitor(s). Card tables are deep enough and long enough to hold almost all of people's computer crap. Unfortunately they look cheap as hell (well... because they are).

Another consideration you might want to look into are Metro Shelves. Metro is the brand name so you can Google'em if you like, but there's a bunch of knock-off no-names out there that perform just as well. They're the big four post wire shelving that you often see in Container Stores or professional kitchens. They've got a three-foot version, and a five foot version. Each shelf holds upwards of 300lbs - the only problem is that they're lacking a keyboard tray - but you can jimmy one of those together with help from your friends at Home Depot. Also have them custom cut a piece of Masonite (the stuff that peg boards are made of, but without the pegs) and take a cheap hand saw or cordless table saw, and you have a perfect fit liner for the shelves. You can also stick casters on the things, and everyone knows that casters make everything ok.

Oh, and that's another tip, if you live in an apartment like I do with that annoying medium depth carpet (1-1.5" deep) that no chairmat can stand up too, instead of spending $100-200 for the good chairmats, get a piece of the Masonite. A 4'x8' sheet is only $6 at our local Home Depot (Lowes was $9). Masonite is a hell of a lot sturdier and a sheeeeeetload cheaper. Just get over the fact that you basically have a piece of finished plywood on the floor. They'll also usually custom cut the sheet for you (sometimes for an additional charge).

Besides gaming, my girlfriend and I do some web and logo work out of our home office. We spent about $2500 on some of the Bush OfficePro Collection (Cherry color) furniture. We waited for a sale at OfficeMax. About every six months you can find it there for 30% off. Yes, it was expensive, but it looks super and it makes us feel like being in our home office. It goes great with black computers and our black LCD monitors. If you want something that's pretty nice, look into it.
