I was saddened to learn of Richard Harris' death. He truly was an acting icon. He lived life to the fullest as you can see by this quote.

"Madam, if you think I'm drunk, wait until see O'Toole."

He will be sadly missed.

(One also has to wonder what'll happen with the Harry Potter films, he played Dumbledore brilliantly)

I had Richard Harris in the Dead Pool on The Well, mostly because of his years drinking with O'Toole. I saw him on Letterman a few years back, sober, and he was telling the most amazing stories about their exploits.

Great actor, he'll be missed. It's a weird feeling to win a pool when someone dies, but it's a weird pool.

Well.. the rumour currently going around is Christopher Lee has been approached to takeover the role as of the third film.

Rumour I heard was that is was the guy who plays Gandalf in LotR was being asked to do the third movie.

Although I heard it whilst drinking in a bar from a friend who had also had a few more than he should have so maybe it was only idle chatter. :)

Christopher Lee is too ebil to play such a character. Ian McKellen would be an excellent replacement. Loved Richard Harris in the Count of Monte Cristo. He will be missed by many.

Christopher Lee only needs to memorise one line for all his movies...

"Join me and together we will destroy <insert name>"

When I think of Lee, I think of really really bad vampire movies.

When I think of O'Toole, I think of "My Favorite Year", or all the movies Richard Harris was in, but with worse teeth of course. /smile

In support of Lee, in the books following Chamber, we do see an increasing stronger, more "defense against evil" side of Dumbledore (against the Ministry, or rather, against the Voldemort faction in the Ministry and the wizarding community, and an increasing mental and physical combat against Malfoy Senior and the big "V" himself)...

Lee could certainly carry that off - although, he would have to stretch out to abtain sweetness, especially in the eyes, to portray that strong, loving side of Dumbledore that we've come to love in Harris' portrayal.

However, I agree that McKellan seems the better choice.

McKellen?

While I think he is a good Gandalf the Grey, at least Frodo is like 70 years old.

After seeing him in "Gods and Monsters". Having him around kids and children, would be questionable for me.

**After seeing him [McKellen] in "Gods and Monsters". Having him around kids and children, would be questionable for me.**

Then how is that different than stereotyping Lee as the evil vampire guy.

Wasn't McKellen around children in LoTR (arrival in Bag End, Bilbo's birthday)? And, portrayed the same genuine love and compassion for life as would our next would-be Dumbledore would?

Finally, McKellen was acting in Gods and Monsters. That's what acting is about, isn't it?

I've heard several names bandied about, but the latest two are Peter O'Toole and Max Von Sydow.

While I think MVS would do a good job, I personally would hope for Peter O'Toole. Peter and Richard were such great friends I think it would be perfect symmetry.

I know they are no longer with us, but I think John Gielgud (butler from Arthur) or Ralph Richardson (played the older Greystoke in the 1983 Tarzan pic)would've been awesome. I always pictures one of them as Fizban.

Edit:

Wrap your head around this from DarkHorizons.com:

Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban: The Sun reports that it looks like an actor has been found to takeover the part of Albus Dumbledore - the original star Richard Harris. It seems producers have been in contact with various FX wizards about using facial mapping techniques with the late actor's visage for the role. Harris' stand in Harry Robinson would be on-set and would shoot the sequences, with his face later replaced by a CG rendering of Harris - already it seems "Many hours of footage are currently being scanned to see if the process is viable for the film" says one insider. The process has been used to allow extras to fill in for main characters in the past, one of the more notable uses of similar technology this year was actress Kate Bosworth's face mapped onto a surfing stunt double for scenes in "Blue Crush". Thanks to 'Nikki Boy', 'Marsey', 'Mark' & 'Gary'.

Wow... it would have to be VERY good.

Even still it doesn't seem completely worth it... they can't recreate Harris' voice I wouldn't have thought.

Harry Potter's getting a brand new headmaster--and his name isn't Ian McKellen. Contrary to rampant tabloid reports over the past several days claiming the current Gandalf portrayer would pull double wizard duty as Hogwarts' Professor Albus Dumbledore, E! Online has learned that another acclaimed
British thespian has in fact been tapped for the role vacated by the death of Richard Harris.

Michael Gambon who picked up Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his virtuoso performance as Lyndon Johnson in HBO's Path to War, will be donning the robes as Dumbledore for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, according to a source familiar with the production. Following Harris' death from cancer in October, there had been much
speculation over who would take over the role, with leading candidates supposedly including McKellen and even Harris' stand-in. But McKellen never seriously considered the role (he's already done the franchise thing with The Lord of the Rings and X-Men) and producers ultimately went with Gambon,
a classically trained actor who studied with Laurence Olivier and whose credits include Gosford Park, The Insider and the lead in the British miniseries The Singing Detective.
Although the exact terms of Gambon's deal are not known, he'll presumably play Dumbledore in the remaining Potter films. Aside from Prisoner of Azkaban, Warner Bros. is committed to turning Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire into a film. J.K. Rowling's still-in-the-works Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and the two planned but untitled final installments are also likely destined for celluloid, but no timetable is in place.
