I have to admit I have tunnel vision when it comes to new computer games. If I like what I'm playing I don't go looking for more. Now though my friends and I are starting to look around. Any ideas on new stuff and when they'll be released? Site links we can check them out at?

Unfortunately the 2 best on the horizon, SWG and EQ2 are both SOE products :(

You need to post more info about what games you like. IE: FPS, fantasy, RPG, sci-fi, RTS, ect. I heard there was an expansion for Everquest coming out soon. I'll probably see what that's all about.

Fairweather, I'm quite sure Seriena knows about PoP. Maybe you could go Troll on some other board today since you've about maxed out your daily Trolling quota on DG.

On the online RPG front the most imminent and meaningful competition to EQ has got to be the new version of Asheron's Call. It is based on a new game engine, a next generation online RPG.

It will still have substantial PVP in it (bad for me) and will still have things that look like orcs and goblins but won't be called orcs and goblins (annoying...give me my familiar fantasy mobs not that spacey alien looking crap). But it will be very pretty.

Beyond that, the biggies are Shadowsmthng (forget the name all the time...very pvp, postponed to spring now), World of Warcraft (will come out at EQ2 time next fall or in 2004, not sure which) and of course EQ2.

Most games other than EQ seem to be focussed more on PVP which is a real drawback for me.

In spite of the emphasis on PVP, WoW will be a must try for me. I love the look of it, and there is a real emphasis on playability and fun going into the game design. EQ2 I am reserved about....it introduces a lot of tedious RP elements like deterioration of armor and weapons and reliance on tradeskills and player houses (yuck!) and will still be about bumping around Norrath after 3.5 years .. even with the new look and new zones. Not new enough to be new in a sense, and adding a bunch of crap that will make the game more tedious.

Geez, first part of my post was asking additional info to help offer suggestions. Second part was a freaking joke.

The DG needs to lighten up. Not everyone is out to get you.

Btw, there are plenty of MMORPG's that will be out in the next several years. If you are going to include games such as WoW, Shadowbane, and EQ2, might as well list City of Heros, Matrix, Some-space-simm, and Marvel just announced a MMORPG project.

I guess the Simms latest will also be an odd sort of MMORPG. Not typical, but MMORPG in it's own way. It all depends on what floats your boat. MMORPGs are rather limiting IMO. There are plenty of good single/multi player games coming out as well. The latest Unreal Tournament is freaking awsome. There are also some great games coming out for consoles like GTA: Vice City.

Shadowbane = Vaporware.

I saw it at E3 this past May. It looked horrible. Maybe if it had come out 3 years ago the graphics wouldn't seem so bad, but if you hate the old world EQ models, you will despise the look of Shadowbane.

hehe It's hard to say what I really like. My history of computer gaming has always been whatever my friends were playing.

Prior to EQ, I played a lot of single player puzzle solving games, then Quake (all multiplayer versions), then the Age of Kings series (strategy) multiplayer, then EQ. So, basically I'm game for anything..my friends are the particular ones ;p And last time we talked they said "You look for something this time" which is why I'm asking. ;)

Do you guys have links where I could go check out some of these games?

Oh, that's easy then. Download Qbeez for realplayer, then google for the crack.

That will keep you busy for days. Be sure you have the sound up ;)

Unreal is a natural for you too. You can DL the demo now and see how well it runs on your system.

I played Diablo II a lot (not sure why) but find it a nice contrast to EQ. I usually can't play it for much more than a couple of days at a time tho. /shrug

P.S. Yah Fairweather, take your 1366 troll posts somewhere else ;)

I never think single players are as good as mmorpg's, i really feel limited in most single player games. MMORPG's just have so much more depth, closest thing i can think of in single player are the old Ultima's, well as far as rpgs are concerned. I prefer strategies and rpg's, sports for my PS2, but everyone has different tastes so its hard to reccomend anything. I looooooved StarCraft, imo the best game of all-time. Yeah, i played WarCraft3 but after the newness wore off i stopped playing it, it just wasnt as fun anymore. To be fair though, nothing in my mind comes close to StarCraft, thats the only game i can play over and over again and i'm talking about the same single player mission over and over again, haha. I suck at multiplayer and i usually get schooled when i try.

Anyhow, there isnt really anything coming out that i'm looking forward to. It was Neverwinter Nights and WarCraft3 but those have been disappointments to me. I was looking forward to Shadowbane but i've heard some bad stuff about it. SWG seems a far ways off, and thats probably the only thing i look forward to seeing at this point.

Sorry Seriena, there isnt much i can reccomend but StarCraft, but i'm sure you've played it :P

If you have a PS2, I'd suggest Kingdom Hearts. Don't let the Disney crap scare ya... it's a guilty pleasure! :)

....and damn beautiful to boot!

The summoning spell of Simba (Lion King) is simply breathtaking

Gameplay wise, I'd say it's a mix of Final Fantasy and Legend of Mana.

City of Heroes looks very promising I agree. I read a press release that Marvel is soon be jumping into the OLMMP (their acronym) market.

I will only play if game designers code it to deliver a lethal shock to every lamer who makes up names like Wolferine or Spiiderman

Newest things on the multiplayer horizons are UT3 and BF1942.(thats Unreal Tournament 3 and Battlefield 1942).
Those games should keep you busy til christmas if you like fast paced multiplayer. biggest things comming out soon on the Massively multiplayer front are Earth and Beyond and Asherons Call2. E&B is definatley going to be released soon however i know next to nothing about it, its a space sim.
Asherons call 2 is a bonafide big name Rpg in late beta.
Could be a sleeper hit but seems to be a more watered down version of the original which basically could not hold peoples interest for very long anyways.

My view is always that if you want a well scripted, progressive story line, go with the single player game. It will beat ANY MMORPG hands down. They are tighter, more structured, and have more of the feel of reading a good book. And I can think of a number that are very open ended in spite of that.

MMORPG's in my own experience are much more monotonous in terms of game mechanics. The worlds are rarely dynamic in meaningful ways, and the "dynamic content" is generally a bunch of lame @#%$ scripts spewed out by a GM or helper.

Where they excel is in the complexity of the gameplay experience with other players. Raids in particular, where true strategy gets employed (single player RPG's never have strategic aspects in my experience, though there are some rudimentary tactical issues).

One is not better than the other for me, but MMORPG's can be more sustainable over time if you ahve a good group you play with. They are much more limited if you play solo most of the time.

Horizons all the way!

Before the blackout they looked good, then when it hit a lot of good fans left to look at other games. But for those that havn't stayed current, they lifted the blackout at E3 and in the last week alone been spewing info.

Go download the demo to Unreal Tournament 2003. Very fast paced game and it is alot of fun. Bombing run is unmatched in the fun factor catagory I think.

Horizons (http://www.artifact-entertainment.com/horizons) is deffinitely the one I'm hanging out for.

Fileplanet has the 4th Phase Beta for Neocron for download for the last 2 weeks of the beta. SO if you want to download just over a gig you can trial that out and then when released you'd need to go out and buy it but at least you'd know if oyu like it or not.

Wow nice tip Geddine. I had not heard about this one.
