View Full Forums : Now that LDoN is out... Can they do this?

Incorporate quests to use the LDoN engine?

For instance. Make a quest similar to the a current quest... but when trying to get one item it would start your own dungeon that only you could go in? Could really add to some standard adventures.

Also, anyone know if the code is generic, so they could spawn someone their own normal zone? No spawns, and just the mobs they want to add for that adventure... (like go kill the frogs in gukta as part of a quest... no merchants... just mobs)

I would love to see them start adding some interesting items using the engine in other areas.

Sure they can.

But the problem:

1. Currently they have budgeted for 10,000 instance dungeons useing current LDON hardware. It would cost them a lot more hardware to be able to support instance dungeons for single players.

2. It goes against their "group" vision of EQ.

It wouldn't have to be single player... heck.. how many quests have parts that require entire guilds...

Sure, if you WANT to go in there by yourself... go for it.... and fail...

In a few months. The amount of people doing LDoN quests will go down... and they will have plenty of space to add fun additions.

Also, I think that before any rogue gets his epic, he should have to sneak to the bottom of a dungeon... weave past all the see-inv mobs... and bring out something out from a locked box... all without pulling a single mob.... It really should be in there...

They could do much worse hehe...

But yeah I hope in a few months when ldon isnt in as much use, that they use the technology to enhance the rest of the game too.

BTW What ever happened to the thing where npc's could run scripted events on their own and cross zones and stuff? Anyone ever see that again?

they could implement Epic 2's

require current epics + 1000 points earned in each context.

then you can form a raid for the special zone.

Any rogue worth their salt has done almost just that. Rather than clearing Hate to get their Book of Souls (old Hate that is... new Hate is too easy), the true rogues snuck their way through Hate to get the book. A lot more dangerous since you don't have any way of just running to zone and clearing aggro.

Stumbled across some answers regarding the LoY scripting system, and what became of it, over on Graffes:

You see it all the time. It's in use all over the place. It works great.

What you're really asking is, where are all the huge scripted events. To that I can only say, there are only so many hours in a year...

I think some people might be missing the distinction between "The scripting engine" and "cross-zone events being implemented using scripts."

Cross-zone events are only a small fraction of what scripts in EQ are for. The scripting engine itself is in use in every single PoP, LoY, and LDoN zone, every revamped high end zone done in the past year, and also in every revamped newbie area.

It was actually developed for PoP. Every event-style encounter, from PoJ trials to PoTime, is script-driven, as is all of the flag progression. The guy who gives you the PoP charm? He's a script, not a standard quest.

LoY's launch event was the first to demonstrate its ability to work across zones. Every charm is an item that makes use of the script engine as well.

LDoN's gameplay (determining wins/losses), those NPC's that follow you around being your pets, the cross-zone introduction quest that gets you started on the lore of the expansion, LDoN raid events, hostages, the hint system that leads you to assassination targets, traps....

All scripted now.

That said, could we use some more large scale cross zone events? Sure. We like them as much as you do.

As for giving them to interns -- Well, that's really not something that'd make too much sense, unfortunately. Scripting in EQ is the most advanced style of content implementation - The mechanics are much more like writing gameplay code than working with game data.

You wouldn't open up the most complex (and therefore dangerous) system to either a newbie designer *or* coder. You can, however, always tell when we do get a new apprentice by the sheer number of doors being fixed suddenly. ;)

It's generally best to let people cut their teeth on things that aren't too dangerous.

Interesting about the charms. That's a pretty slick way of doing them.
