I have a rather strange item in my System Config startup screen there is something I have never seen before.

Startup Item 1
Command 1
LocationSOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Anyone have any ideas?

Well thats one of the spots in the system registry that lists programs to run when the system is started. Your post doesnt say what program is going to be run, but it's normal for there to be things in there.

"1" is kind of an odd name for a startup program, maybe it's unnecessary. Try deleting that line and see if everything still runs OK.

btw you need to run regedit to go into the registry incase you didnt know....my advice is to look before changing.

Be carefull what you change in the registry if you dont understand it then you could easily make your pc inoperable.

If needs take a screen shot of that area and post it :)

Also when fooling around in your registry. First backup the "good" one so in case you kill your registry you have a good version.

I recently downloaded the new Real Media player and I noticed it is being called MediaOne now.

They seem to have added some kinda of "instant message" popup system which lets you know news items about updates and whatnot.

VERY annoying.

***edit***

I did uninstall it, but I notice the service is still there (albiet disabled by yours truly).

Get Media Player Classic (not from microsoft)... has realmedia plugins (among others) and NO ANNOYING IM CRAP STARTUP CRAP AND OTHER CRAP.

I hate programs that put in 10million things I dont want when I just want to watch the darn movie!

Real player is the spawn of Satan. Just stay far, far away.

/agree. A lot of the staff members at my college LOVE Real player to death. It makes me want to kill them. They also love Comet Cursor, the bane of my existance. (I work at our Computer Center, doing tech support and hardware maintenance, so this really irks us.)

As for the registry item, I have no idea. Nothing like it on my box, but that doesn't mean a whole lot.

Ugh, Realplayer. It was evil enough to begin with, but RealOne is just plain disgusting. That's putting it extremely politely.

It pops XP-style system notification tabs up all the time, citing "exciting news" about various RealNetworks stuff that nobody could give a dingo's kidneys about. And guess what: there's NO, as in ZERO, as in NUH-UH way to turn it off

It isn't even going NEAR my new box, I'd suggest a similar policy on yours :) Uninstall it, and eradicate whatever traces you can. Other things to do are installing AdAware and Spybot.

I know you're intelligent, so an existing virus checker and firewall are already assumed :)

Actually you can kill all that RPlayer stuff with a little work. I had it clean for ages on my home box but finally deleted it once MP grew up. I still have it here on an Win XP box, although largely crippled and I can't say that it's interrupted a process in recent memory. I did use it for a long time for checking compatibility for .movs and as a program it was decently functional.

It never gave me half the fits that Norton AV used to ;)

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.php

Where I work we use this list alot when troubleshooting system startup problems, virus's, and slow systems.

Goto
Startup
Run
msconfig

click the startups tab and scroll down the list to see what is eating up system resources and find spyware and other intrusive registry programs.
