I'm looking for a program that lets you draw maps that look half-way decent (nothing to do with EQ). For a project that I'm working on, I need to be able to create a map of several areas of a game world. I can draw them out on graph paper and color them, but I'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination :)

Does anyone know of a map-drawing program that would let you rough out a general outline of an area, then fill it in with forests, mountains, rivers, etc., then save the result as a .jpg or .gif file?

Thanks :)

Being that I work in the mapping software industry....

The products my company makes are pretty high end and really don't do what you are talking about. You might have a look at some of the Microsoft products - they may do what you want.

Otherwise, I would suggest trying Illustrator. I think you could probably download sharewise fill patterns (if you wanted that sort of thing) and since it's Illustrator, you could easily bring it into Photoshop for other effects.

you can make maps with Warcraft 3..
Just not sure if you can print them out.

Illustrator... not familiar with that, I'll check it out :)

I found a few RPG mapping programs, which is what I'm wanting this for, but they produce low quality maps, especially for the price they wanted.

Thanks for the help :)
