I know it's a stupid question.

But IE used to be able to download more than 2 streams at the same time.

Where is the switch to turn that back on?

Anyone know?

Try opening a second browser window.

To the best of my knowledge there isn't a setting to allow for more than two downloads at the same time.

To comply with current Internet standards, Internet Explorer limits the number of simultaneous downloads to two downloads, plus one queued download. This configuration is a function of the browser. However, as connection speeds increase, and the number of total connections that are allowed to Internet servers increase, the two-connection limit may be restrictive.

Please Note: Changing the maximum number of connections beyond two is a violation of Internet standards; use at your own risk!

To increase the number of simultaneous connections that are allowed, follow these steps:

1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings
3. Select New > DWORD Value from the Edit menu
4. Name the new value MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
5. Right-click the MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server value and choose Modify
6. Under Base, click the radio button next to Decimal
7. In the Value Data: box enter the number of simultaneous connections you want to set (for example 10 is a good value), and click OK
8. Repeat steps 3 - 7 using the new value MaxConnectionsPerServer
9. Exit the registry editor

Mozilla Firebird http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/ is the one I currently use. Its as fully functional as IE is, plus it has added features like automatic blocking of almost all advertisments, tabbed browsing - you gotta try to know how useful this is, no security issues since I installed it unlike IE and outlook.

I use the full-blown Mozilla myself, since it doubles as a free mail/news program. Tabbed browsing and built-in ad/popup blocking are great. I like the mouse gestures addon too (copied from Opera, I think).

Oh, that reminds me...is there a faster JVM than Sun's that I can use with Mozilla? The default Microsoft one in IE is much faster. Settlers of Catan is nearly unplayable with Sun's Java package...

I use an older version of Firebird, back when it was called Phoenix still. It is an absolutely awesome browser and easilly customized to your tastes. The tabbed browsing makes it all worth it.

Still many sites that unfortunately doesn't comply with current Internet standards, but tailors their sites specifically for Internet Explorer.

If you like Mozilla/Firebird (I personally use Firebird and Thunderbird, Mozilla's standalone browser and mail client, reason I use seperate is that mail integrations with the rest of the system doesn't work well with Mozilla, but it does with Thunderbird) for it's tabbing abilities, and built-in pop-up blocker, then you can use Avant Browser (search google for a link). It's a free program that gives you just that. Tabbed browsing and built-in pop-up stopper, integrates Internet Explorer.

Reason I however like Firebird above Internet Explorer, is that it's faster, it doesn't need to get higher priority to work in full speed while playing EverQuest. It has a type'n'search feature thingie where you just type the name of the link you want to find.

/agree (Sorry to hijack the thread, should only really have mentioned the download manager)

Best thing to do with the few broken websites left out there is plead with their webmasters to comply to standards. Some of them don't even realise their site is broken and will be glad for the opportunity to widen their audience.

(Yes I know it's probably only like 2% of users, however it's generally the same 2% that are the Internet's expert user base - frequent board users etc)

I use Firebird (web) and Thunderbird (mail) - very nice combination, even though they're no longer combined IYSWIM :)

I am using Opera (http://www.opera.com) and i am very satisfied!

S Internet Explorer still got some severe unpatched security issues. Everyone is able to load a program and execute it on your computer by preparing a special website. There is a demonstration of this vulnerabilty available on germanies biggest computer magazine website: Click here to check your WinXP & IE 6.0 System (http://www.heise.de/security/dienste/browsercheck/demos/ie/1CR/)

In addition to typing to find text in a link, you can now hit slash and type what you're searching for in normal text. Saves a whole 5 seconds, but I like it. :)

(Oops, I should clarify...it performs the search _while_ you type. So I hit /d, and it highlights the first instance of "d"...I continue typing with "ru" and it will have the first instance of "dru" highlighted. I then type "i", and it beeps--no occurrences of "drui" in the page. It's nice for when you're not sure how much to put into a search box--full string, just the first word, etc.)
