View Full Forums : New Layout?

Up until yesterday, when viewing a thread, the name of the poster would appear in a small column on the left, with the actual post to the right of that.

Now the name of the poster is a huge great row above each post, and really breaks up the flow of a thread.

I’ve tried to change the layout back to the old style, but can’t seem to work out how. Is there a way to do this which I’m missing, or is it impossible?

I’ve also noticed that on the index screens for each forum the rows for each post are about twice as wide as they were before, meaning less shows up on screen at once. I don’t know if there is a way to change this either.

Any way to add the "View all New Posts" option as a direct link on the forum main page? I'm accustomed to using that, and that dropdown thing is slow and cumbersome. Plus it's impossible to see (darkblue text on black background) with image loading disabled, which is how I often surf to save bandwidth (on dialup, doncha know.)

darkblue text on black background

Not sure what your seeing, did you change to the Druids Grove Default?

At the bottom left of the page you will see a box. In this box there is the new druid style and a normal VB style. Click on the one you want and it should reload your browser.

(still not awake) but this may help

It's on the top of the forums... "New Posts" button.

The javascript isn't slow for me at all. I've tested it on afew computers and it works as it should. The CPU rendering is slow on your end.

edit: I'm working on a P1 300mhz computer with 48.8 conection atm. None of the javascript is running really slow. Check your memoery load, something is eating it up.

Those those smiley images don't exist right now. I have to find the images again. Like I said board came up only 75% online. I had to go to work, so 75% was better then keep the grove down till friday.

I like the new layout a lot. But for some reason my fonts are utterly enormous now.

Rahjeir

Hrm, fronts are enormous? Hrm I'm not seeing that. If you could take a screenshot of your screen and send it to me at rahjeir@thedruidsgrove.org. If you can't tell me the browser you use.

Names being big slightly has some landscape problem (like my name), its my hopes that the "width of the box itself" will be shortened a bit once we find the setting. AKA: notice Bartleby - his picture is bigger then his Name. - ... so thats what we should expect the size of the box to be (with some buffer to it), will work on this a bit, once all the other settings are fixed up.

Deal?

Well you telling me that it's not slow doesnt change the fact that it's slow for me. It scrolls out slowly, it's cheesy, its an extra click, and like I said it's impossible to see the button with image loading off. I'm not wanting a change in the javascript, just an actual link, for show all new posts, just like what was on the previous version of the board.

As for blue text on black background, Sobe, turn off image loading and restart IE, and you'll see what I mean.

And please dont everyone start with "Oh but you should use <insert alternative browser>!" 90% of the surfing public uses IE and so do I.

I am using netscape! I would be using Mozilla except it gets buggy at times. Hate IE. If IE had tabbed browsing, I'd work with IE..but they don't soooooo netscape it is.

P.S. haha, fisher price...

P.S.S. I'm getting some serious slowness on these boards today :/

Introducing, just in time for all the Christmas ******s:

The Fisher Price "MY FIRST GROVE"

That's right, parental units, throw away the 'my first power saw' and the 'my first baker's rack'... the new "MY FIRST GROVE" will allow your child to enjoy the humble life of the druid as a child of nature, at one with the world!

hmm - I haven't seen anything slow - I will check some compression settings also - Dial-up maybe the issue - will connect my old fogies computer (no offense but its the only one with a modem) and check speeds that way.

Guys, gals, give input - we won't know about problems if they are not reported.. just don't be to harsh on us - we only do one thing at a time.. now I know how SoE feels.. but we are a staff of 3 Admins (art, logic, programming) with that combination either be it "all knowing" or a general sense of what is needed.. we will correct the issues that we are knowledgeable about.. if we can.

LoL Fisher Price - thx for the smile during our times of need for this.. oh and I just got the bill.. Christmas list just went from friends and family .. to just Family and the Grove. Any help is appreciated and respected, and we are looking at a couple of ways to "remove" some zero's from that bill for next year.

I do not understand what your browser is doing. Turning the images off have nothing to do with the nav bar. All the sigs ect ect, I have off and the nav bar is loading to me. There is all "New Posts" Link at the top of the board. I honestly do not know what your talking about. I would need a Screen shot of what your talking about. I'm unable to recreate your problem, I can't fix something I can't see or unable to recreate. It truely sounds like you have a major problem with your browser. The nav bar shouldn't be black, at all. There is a graphic that loads, to fill the area. Which isn't controled by user graphic settings.

(Edit:I changed the CSS file to not fill black under the image that loads ontop of it. Though, you should've never saw black for more they .10 seconds. A image should've loaded ontop of it no matter what.

That's part of how the postbit was built. It's not a error. It's working how it's programmed. I ran on 2 hours sleep lastnight and wasn't able to look into it.

As much as people knock I.E, it's the only browser that auto fixes mistakes in programming. All others doesn't fix a thing.

Hehe

Instead of allowing sloppy programming, it's better to actually demand correct programming imo :)

Cloudien

That's exactly what's wrong (and anti-competitive) with it. It doesn't fix mistakes in programming per se, but rather uses its own workarounds when it comes to rendering particular anomolies in the code. Nobody really knows what those workarounds are and where they apply. It only encourages people to write crappy HTML, and forces all the users onto one browser in order to see the broken site.

Can you imagine if all browsers did this? They would all interpret broken sites in different ways. Now that would be messy!

Whether people use IE, Mozilla, Safari, whatever... it's up to them. All we ask for is the right to choose.

Have you guys ever wrote pages that had both absolute positioning in it and iframes for Netscape?

Tables are bad enough(formatting wrong, text bleed, cell tiling, etc). But those are unusable for the most part.

Don't blame it on the code, unless you mean that steaming pile, erm cup, of Java.

I am not talking about leaving off the last /table tag. Textbook coding blows it up, or is plain not supported. Or loads once, then blam, blows up.

So many real coders are Form Before Function, when the Big I has never, and never will be about that.

If I have to write 4 different pages for a site, with the alternative being only one browser, I will write 4 different pages. Having the choice as a user, outweighs the convenience of the producer, and should.

HTML was initially written to essentially be just a way to link files, a glorified favorites page if you will. It was never designed to be a layout language, and it has had to deal with those limitations from the beginning.

I think the new board setup is a step backwards.

And the whole new post thing doesn't work for me at all. It'll say things are new when they aren't... it'll say a forum has new posts when it doesnt... even if I mark all forums red, certain forums still appear to have new posts...

I just want to state, I am sorry for the problems over the last few days. When I upgraded us, I was to have time to work on only on the upgrade. Our server company then broke their agreement with us. I've been running around like mad moving the info to my personal server to make sure the TDG stays running. It's been a very tiring and lack of sleep process. I'm trying to make it as unnoticeable as possable, but I'm being screwed by companies everywhere I turn.

As of this post, the 100meg Database the druids grove uses is being pulled from my server. If I have my way, I want the whole thing moved to my server. I'm soo upset at our company it's not even funny.

Don't worry Rahjeir I wasn't talking about the boards :) I was talking about web code in general.

The boards look exactly the same in both Mozilla and IE here, which is a really good thing and a fine example of good web authoring on vB's side and good tweaking on yours :)

Good luck with your host, sounds like you might need it :/

Looks good, but I REALLY need my "mark this forum read" buttons back, when you get a moment.

DemonMage
12-20-2003, 08:59 PM
Are you wanting an acutal button? Because at the bottom of the forums list, below Forum and Website Bugs, is two links

Mark Forums Read View Forum Leaders

Or are you just wanting one for each forum, instead of a global one? Wasn't sure if you hadn't seen the global one or not =-p =-)

Cloudien

When viewing the forum that needs to be marked, click on "forum tools"

You should see a drop-down menu that includes "mark this forum read"

I know, it fooled me too, but it's cute :)

Okay, when I left the board last week, it was green. When I come back today, it is blue. My friend sees it as green still. The style chooser at the bottom of the screen no longer has any options in it.

HELP - I don't want to be a blue druid :(

Thanks for taking my Fisher Price comment the way it was intended. For those who didn't realize until just then - NOTHING I post is generally meant to be serious. Somehow using these forums reminds me of driving my old car, The Fisher Price "My First Car" a.k.a. Saturn SL1.

Oh hey look, somehow I found the big 'ole knob for the Private Messages since the text is all huge now! And wow! People are sending me PMs?! Sorry if I never got back to you, I forgot about that feature!

Anyway, one thing I did notice while playing around with it, there doesn't seem to be a "Reply" button when you read a PM. You have to FWD them and copy-paste the username, far too much work for a government employee to do!

On the front page for each forum, the numbers (1,2,3..last) by the thread name for long threads have disappeared.

Its kinda fun reading the boards at the moment. Something new every day :)
