I would like to propose a complete ban on silver platters. It is my observation that the use of or the perceived use of silver platters causes way too much greif.

I always thought the silver tray was a classic touch!

I think it woulod be better if people took a step back and realized that everyone is entitled to their own perception. Some viewpoints are more widely recognized than others. Just stop making it a personal conflict, cuz that's what grown-ups try to do.

i'm sure i don't know the context of this, but i would like to point out that the dinner being served on a tray made of wood has a certian ... less than desirable feel, when it is covered by the silver lid, that the white-gloved servant removes from the dinner at your tableside.
you should also be calling for all periphials to the silver platter to be banned as well, lid, included, and possibly the white gloves.

A new game, I think, is to see how long any discussion takes before the "silver platter" is used.

It's a useful idiom for a multitude of reasons.
This thread highlighting one of them.

Laurenia's post yet ANOTHER post about rude beggars... (http://thedruidsgrove.org/forums/showthread.php?t=983&highlight=silver+platter) in January of 2002 was the oldest I can find. Perhaps we can refer to this as the epoch post. The recent ones all seem to revolve around the Uber vs Non-Uber debate. The further back you go , you get more interesting context.

Casual players must have sumptuous homes what with all their silver platter and silver spoons and all! But dang, with all the polishing they gotta do of their silverware no wonder they don't have enough time to play EQ like the ubers!

I wouldn't know, Jinjre! I don't think I've owned a silver piece of dinner ware in my entire life. I'd like to know why, as a casual player, this is the case? According to the ubers I should have spoons and platters galore.
I have a really tacky looking Mikasa glass, christmas themed platter.... does that count?

Nah, nothing you buy in the bazaar counts. You have to camp it yourself and it has to be no drop.
The only reason I own silver is because too many of my relatives died. But that doesn't count either, because really, that's just being twinked by my grandparents ;)

Thing is, I have nothing to put ON it for you. I have been very lucky in life and had so many platters handed to me... but I am also very greedy and plan to keep everything I got!
