I particularly like this snippet:

In part, this is caused by the roleplayers interested in such game oft being a minority in the overall population, and also that developers often try to please many different factions at once, managing to not hit on enough to draw in any.

I think it boils down to this:

2 types of people

Type 1) Event happens, slay the dragon. The brave band of would-be heroes gather around a table in a dark, smokey tavern and decide to slay the evil dragon and rescue the virgin that is going to be sacrificed on the morrow.

They strap on their weapons, get a little drunk, and take on the dragon. They wage a mighty battle. Many of their numbers fall and the vile beast in sorely injured, but in the end, they don't win the battle because they've been role-playing and they don't have the l33t-g34r they need to take on the dragon.

Type 2) "Dudes, I'm bored lets go kill that big leezard." They equip their l33t-weapons, go kill the dragon. "Woot! 133t sword of Dragon Slaying pwns!"

=================================================

So you design the game for Type 1 and the Type 2's are bored. Reverse it and the Type 1's become depressed and write depressing stories about their characters childhood.

I notice a lot of MMORPG's don't call themselves MMORPG's any longer. They call themselves MMOG's.

Yeah, I know. The problem in designing for Type 1, is that Type 2 just won't take the time to explore and look around. They'll rush through everything and be done with it and get bored. Which if they leave... wouldn't bother me all that much. The devs decide to slow the Type 2 people down and it really, really slows down the Type 1 people to the point of frustration.

I just like the article because it confirms my hope that there might be a market for a game solely designed for Type 1 people.

"2 types of people"

DnD always had those two main demos.

Actually there was (at least) three.

1) Roleplayers. "Ye, shall slayeth"
2) Hack n' Slashers. "Just gimme the dice, dude"
3) Min/Maxers. "Hey, I don't have 4 18's, I'm going to re-roll this guy."
