DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download will be available soon on Windows Update. To receive this download, turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP to receive an optimized download of SP2. Please visit Protect Your PC for more information on receiving Windows XP SP2.

Or download it if you have WarezWindows!

Jeebus, there's something cool about getting 700KB/Sec and downloading this thing in six minutes.

Die 8( I'll finish getting it by tomorrow afternoon it seems!

Many advantages to getting the whole thing, like not having to re-download anything if you have to reinstall XP.

Or, even better, you can follow these directions here (http://www.iamnotageek.com/articles.php?aid=12&page=1) to make your very own bootable XP SP2 cd by combining the one you own with the full downloaded service pack.

Turn on Auto-Update....Correct me if I'm wrong; Wasn't there a massive virus not too long ago that inffected open Windows OS systems on the interenet by attacking some 3000 numbered port? And it was SO massive that it actually also inffected Windows Update, thus infecting EVERY SINGLE COMPUTER WITH AUTO UPDATE ENABLED!

Why does MS Still promote that bs?

(sorry, just a small rant on that...)

I wish I could... SBC just announced they were installing DSL in the area I live in, so I logged on and tried to get the line tested and sign up for DSL. My lines are too poor condition and I'm too far away still. I hate the countryside and I hate the cost of living being so much higher than minimum wage.

Uhh...
The only thing that came close that I can remember was the <a href="http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html">Blaster worm</a>, and that was hardly anything like you described.

Don't install it yet if you're playing CoH. It isn't supported yet.

Installed it, no problems with anything yet (havent tried CoH though... I confess I cancelled the other day finally) If you're like me and use a custom theme you can get a hacked uxtheme.dll file from here (http://vortex2050.dyndns.org:8080/) to enable the use of non-Microsoft themes and all will be well.

I think you're partly right. There was a buffer overrun problem in IIS a few years back that could be exploited to allow you to execute code on some systems running IIS. I believe that the Code Red worm exploted this problem and that it infected the Windows Update server. However, as far as I know, it did not infect the updates. I don't know of any incidents where Windows Update has distributed a virus.

FWIW, I've used Windows Update for years on a number of my systems running various versions of Windows and I've never been infected by a virus. All of these systems have been on the internet 24/7 and about half of them have had Windows Update running with auto update enabled.

It was a blaster virus, but I know some version ended up infecting Windows update sometime last year. MS actually had to shut down Windows Update for a time period there while they fixed the problem. Your systems might have not gotten the virus if your system didn't check windws update during the time it was infected.
