Folks,

I just nerfed Cenyana's sig for being too big, but checking around, a lot of DG'ers have sigs that are double or more in size of our requested size.

Please double check your sig size and resize it so that it's smaller so we can converse DG bandwidth!

Thanks!

DG Posting Rules (http://thedruidsgrove.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2048)
6) Signatures will be kept to one picture per post, under 30k and max dimensions of 500x100px. Moderators have full authority to remove any signature.

so we can converse DG bandwidth! :wavey: Chenier. TDG bandwidth is only utilized when web clients request material hosted by TDG. Typically, signature images are hosted elsewhere. Mine, for example, is hosted at earthlink.net. After a particular TDG page (of markup) is downloaded to a web client, the client then issues separate HTTP requests to the web servers serving those images, assuming the images aren't found in the client's cache. This is why web pages download and render images after the text. If a client doesn't receive the full image, a red X is displayed instead. The whole non-TDG-hosted object transaction uses zero TDG bandwidth.

I certainly understand the need for smaller signatures: it saves viewer download time and rendering space on the page. I've had to nerf a few myself at PoM and Magelo message boards over the years. But we need to be clear about why we nerf something when we do it. We aren't SOE, after all. ;)

I  concise!

PS. Btw, your sig has two pics in it. :shuffle: :)

More points...

I think you meant "conserve." :)

At Magelo, our forum web server enforces a rule such that a poster's signature only shows up once in a thread. It happens automatically and has worked fine for years. The powers that be might want to consider implementing something like it here. Some threads here go on and on and on.... Makes you wonder how many times you need to see the same sig.

Yer splittin' hairs, Onetree :)

The image size restriction is mostly for folks still on dial up connections. You'll notice that even tho Chen has two sigs, combined they're still around that 30k mark.

The image dimension restirction is so we don't giant sigs that warp the size of the thread, or take up a billion page up/page downs to get past.

I've already thought about this, and came up with a hardcoded way to do it. It just hasn't be moved over to the liveside of TDG.

Chenier just misspoke. Huge sigs, do not hurt TDG's bandwidth in the normal sence. They do however slow loading time for many people. If we wanted slow loading times, we would've stayed on Ezboards. :)

I personally, have let huge images slide. What really gets me is Java Sigs. I asked many people over the last few months to delete the Java in their Sig. Why don't I like java? One error in your script will cause a page error in the thread it's posted. Making my server log go nuts every single time it's viewed. Just think about the epic 1.5 thread for starters. 20k times it has been viewed. One bad javascript could've made 20k error logs.

I stay away from java in mine. =) I don't know how to write java. Don't like to drink it either. I'll stick with hot cocoa.

That's the number of times my current sig pic has been accessed since August 10th. Kinda fun to keep track of.

*hugs* Chenier... didn't mean to cause a fuss, hon. You've always had the classiest, most delectible sigs on the board. more more please :)

Did you mean Javascript, Rahjeir? I didn't think you allowed it on this board. Many don't due to ... well, let's call it creative mischief one might do.

I don't allow Java on this board .. to close that subject.. right away.

As for sig sizes for the rest of our population.. we still have people on dialup and we want to continue to support those people. One option we do have is for people to turn off sig's etc on the board just incase our efforts in managing sig's that are to big fail or we miss them.

A lot of boards do not even allow signatures. .. I think its an optional expression that should be shared with the communities you are part of.

*pipes in* I'm on dial up and most signatures I've seen have been reasonable. I use a scroll wheel mouse so scrolling past unwanted information on the screen is a simple matter. Also, I use Firefox, so I usually have three or four different tabs loading at the same time. By the time I get to the next tab, it's already finished loading for the most part.

Makes dial-up bearable on high graphic web sites.

Is this too big? I can fix it if need be...but it was my first time ever trying to make one. =]
